Solar photovoltaic technology has witnessed significant advancements through the development of novel hybrid heterojunction solar cells (HHSCs). However, there is scope for enhancement of power conversion efficiency (PCE) of the HHSCs. Here, a solution-based fabrication approach involving a high-performance semi-transparent perovskite cell (ST-PSC) stacked in tandem with a hybrid heterojunction silicon solar cell (HHSC) has been demonstrated for efficiency enhancement. The proposed 4-terminal tandem architecture exploits light management through the bandgap matching of the perovskite cell with silicon to minimize thermalization and absorption losses. This has led to a significant 41 % enhancement in the PCE of the HHSC. The experimental results are also correlated with the help of SCAPS 1D simulation. These low cost tandem solar cells hold the potential for upscaling and commercialization.

solution processable fluorene-extended Indeno[1,2-b]anthracenes: Synthesis, characterization and photophysical properties

Efficient fluorescent emitters indenoanthracenes (indene-fused anthracenes) were conjugatively extended by a fluorene unit to achieve larger molecular size derivatives of this semiconductor class. These new fluorene-extended indenoanthracene derivatives were prepared in two steps from the corresponding indenoanthraquinones in good overall yields (56-71%). They showed good solubility in common organic solvents and intense fluorescence. The synthesis and photophysical, thermal and electroluminescence properties of compounds are described. The photophysical properties of indenoanthracenes were examined by UV-vis and fluorescence spectroscopies. The indenoanthracenes in solution and thin film were found to emit in the range of 480-520 nm with good quantum yields (Phi(f) 0.51-0.71). They also exhibited relatively high initial decomposition temperatures varying from 330 to 390 degrees C. The fluorene-extended indenoanthracenes were used as an emissive layer for the fabrication of solution-processed OLEDs. Using the device with the structure of ITO/PEDOT:PSS/indenoanthracene-D/BCP/Alq(3/)LiF/Al;a maximum luminous efficiency of 1.74 cd/A was obtained with an external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 0.73%.

A new class of solution processable dendrimers based on cyclic phosphazene (CP) cores have been prepared and used as host materials for blue and green organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs). The dendrimers are prepared in high yield from minimal step reactions, are soluble in common solvents for solution processing, are amorphous, and have excellent thermal properties necessary for application in OLEDs. OLED efficiencies of 10.3 cd/A (4.2 lm/W) and 35.3 cd/A (33.5 lm/W) were achieved using commercially available Flrpic and lr(mppy)(3) as blue and green phosphorescent emitters, respectively. These efficiencies were 2 x higher than control devices prepared using poly(N-vinylcarbazole), the most commonly used host material in solution processed phosphorescent OLEDs. Scalable preparation of solution processable graphene and its bulk materials with high specific surface areas and designed porosities is essential for many practical applications. Herein, we report a scalable approach to produce aqueous dispersions of holey graphene oxide with abundant in-plane nanopores via a convenient mild defect-etching reaction and demonstrate that the holey graphene oxide can function as a versatile building block for the assembly of macrostructures including holey graphene hydrogels with a three-dimensional hierarchical porosity and holey graphene papers with a compact but porous layered structure. These holey graphene macrostructures exhibit significantly improved specific surface area and ion diffusion rate compared to the nonholey counterparts and can be directly used as binder-free supercapacitor electrodes with ultrahigh specific capacitances of 283 F/g and 234 F/cm(3), excellent rate capabilities, and superior cycling stabilities. Our study defines a scalable pathway to solution processable holey graphene materials and will greatly impact the applications of graphene in diverse technological areas.

In this work, a single-step synthesis route to prepare lauryl gallate capped TiO2 nanoparticles has been established. Powder X-Ray diffraction analysis shows anatase as the predominant inorganic phase. UV-vis and FT-IR spectroscopy characterization denotes that lauryl gallate molecules are covalently linked to the particulate titania core through the enediolate group. The as prepared powder is easily dispersable in common organic solvents, such as tetrahydrofurane, methylethylketone and n-butanol, showing good stability under ambient atmosphere. This solution processable precursor facilitates thin film deposition on glass substrates. The capping gallate derivative also facilitates preparing translucent TiO2-polystyrene composites. We have synthesized a new solution processable iridium complex, di[2-(4'-octyloxyphenyl) benzothiazole]iridium(III)acetoacetone, [(OPBT)(2)Ir(acac)], based on benzothiazole derivative for organic electro-phosphorescent devices. The synthesized molecule was identified by H-1 NMR and C-13 NMR, and readily soluble in common organic solvents such as chlorobenzene. The UV-visible absorption and photoluminescence properties of pristine [(OPBT)(2)Ir(acac) thin film as well as poly(N-vinylcarbzole) (PVK) thin film doped with the iridium complex were studied. The maximum UV-visible absorption and photoluminescence (PL) spectra are found to be at 337 nm and 547 nm, respectively. We have fabricated phosphorescent organic light-emitting devices using the ITO/PEDOT:PSS (40 nm)/PVK:(OPBT)(2)Ir(acac) (40 nm)/Balq (40 nm)/LiF (1 nm)/Al (80nm) configuration with the iridium complex as a triplet emissive dopant in poly(N-vinylcarbazole)(PVK) host. The electroluminescence (EL) devices showed greenish yellow light emission with maximum peak at 551 nm. Especially, the maximum external quantum and Current efficiency of 1 mol% doped device were 1.74% and 4.89 cd/A, respectively. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The solar cell efficiency of solution processable CuInS2 inverted type solar cells in two different crystal structures of chalcopyrite and wurtzite are compared. The solvothermal process in assistance with pre-dissolving the precursors is used to control the crystalline phases and the electrophoretic deposition is utilized to deposit absorber layer. The XRD and Raman spectroscopies confirm the formation of chalcopyrite and wurtzite phases without any trace of impurity phases. The band gap of Wurtzite phase is slightly higher than that of chalcopyrite phase. However, the wurtzite film consists of larger grains and lower porosity, which are beneficial in solar cell application. Furthermore, the chalcopyrite phase crystallizes in Cu-rich phase compared with the wiirtzite phase with slightly Cu-rich compound which play a crucial role in higher carrier concentration of the absorber in the presence of high sulfur content. The inverted type solution processed chalcopyrite cell shows 5.31% efficiency (J(sc) of 14.90 mA/cm(2), Voc of 585 mV, and FF of 0.61), which is enhanced up to 26% compared with the wurtzite cell and reaches 6.72% (J(sc) of 17.80 mA/cm(2), Voc of 590 mV, and FF of 0.64).

solution-processed organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) are currently attracting a lot of attention for their simple fabrication process. However, most laboratory-scale solution-processed devices are fabricated by spin-coating method which is not the optimum method for fabricating devices with a larger area as much of the material is wasted. Herein, a dip-coating method is introduced for its advantages for producing large-sized devices. The method is a more reliable and material saving fabrication process. In the present study, both the hole-transporting layer (HTL) and emitting layer (EML) were prepared by dip coating, and solution-processed green thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) based OLEDs with high efficiencies were fabricated.

Benzothiadiazole, hexylthiophen and alkoxy benzene based solution processable copolymer: Effect of the electron withdrawing substituents (fluorine atoms) on electrochemical, optical and electrochromic properties

4,7-Bis(4-hexyl-5-(trimethylstannane) -2-thienyl) 2,1,3-benzothiadiazole (HTBT) coupled with 2,5-bis (decyloxy)-l,4-dibromobenzene to afford the donor-pi-bridge-donor-acceptor conjugated poly (4,7-bis (4-hexyl-2thienyl) 2,1,3-benzothiadiazole-co-p-didecyloxybenzene) (PTBTB). Further, copolymerization of fluorine-functionalized HTBT moiety with alkoxyl benzene pi-bridge using Stille crossing-coupling reaction yield PTBTB-F. The optical, electrochemical, fluorescent, spectroelectrochemical and electrochromic switching properties of two polymers with different acceptors are studied in detail. Both polymers exhibit excellent solubility in conventional organic solvents, high thermal stability and favorable fluorescence properties. The combination of a strong electron withdrawing pendant group (fluorine atoms) with benzothiadiazole (BT) backbone significantly influences the electrochemical redox, optical and electrochromic behaviors of conducting polymers. The introduction of fluorine atoms to BT lead to a higher oxidation onset potential, but an improved electrochemical n-doping process. The optical band gaps (E-g) of PTBTB and PTBTB-F films are calculated to be 2.02 eV and 1.91 eV, respectively. PTBTB and PTBTB-F films exhibited obvious and reversible color switching between their neutral and oxidized states with high optical contrasts as well as favorable response times, making the polymers unique candidates for flexible organic electrochromic device applications.

Electroluminescent (EL) properties of Ir(III) complex, [(2,4-diphenylquinoli-ne)](2)Iridium picolinic acid N-oxide [(DPQ)(2)Ir(pic-N-O)] were investigated using PEDOT:PSS and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) as a hole transport layer for solution processable phosphorescent organic light-emitting diodes (PhOLEDs). High performance solution-processable PhOLED with PEDOT:PSS and (DPQ)(2)Ir(pic-N-O) (8wt%) doped CBP:TPD:PBD (8:56:12) host emission layer were fabricated to give a high luminance efficiency (LE) of 26.9 cd/A, equivelent to an external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 14.2%. The corresponding PhOLED with rGO as a hole transport layer exhibited the maximum brightness and LE of 13540 cd/m(2) and 16.8 cd/A, respectively. The utilization of the solution processable rGO thin films as the hole transport layer offered the great potential to the fabrication of solution processable PhOLEDs.
