In this paper, power optimization of wireless systems utilizing multiple transmit antennas and successively refinable source coding is considered. We present a solution to a formulation of an optimization problem aimed at minimizing total power consumption of such wireless systems subject to a given level of QoS and an overall available bit rate. Our formulation takes into consideration the power consumption related to source coding, channel coding, and layered transmission of multiple transmit antennas. In our study, we consider a Gauss-Markov source model, a Rayleigh fading channel along with the Gilbert-Elliott loss model, and a space-time transmission block code.

We consider the distributed source coding system of L correlated Gaussian sources Y-i, i = 1, 2, ..., L. We assume that Y-L = t(Y-1, Y-2, ..., Y-L) is an observation of the remote source vector XL = t(X-1, X-2, ..., X-L), having the form Y-L = X-K + N-L, where N-L = (t)(N-1, N-2, ..., N-L) is a vector of L independent Gaussian random variables also independent of X-L. In this system L correlated Gaussian observations are separately compressed by L encoders and sent to the information processing center. In this paper, we study the multiterminal source coding problem where the decoder wishes to reconstruct the observation Y-L = X-L + N-L. In the previous work the author derived inner and outer bounds of the rate distortion region and derived a matching condition of the above two bounds. In this paper, based on this matching condition, we give a detail analysis on a part of the inner bound where it coincides with the outer bound. We further study an explicit characterization of the sum rate part of the rate distortion region when the observed Gaussian sources have a certain symmetric property.

This paper introduces reduced rank statistical processing to residual error linear predictive source coding. A reduced rank predictive weight vector is generated using the Reduced Order Correlation Kernel Estimation Technique (ROCKET). The results illustrate a significant reduction in the reconstruction error of a reduced rank filter when the residual error is corrupted by noise. The noise may be due to either quantization noise or channel noise. The analysis shows that a filter's impulse response determines the impact of noise on its signal reconstruction and it is the ability of the predictive filter to alter its impulse response as a function of rank which improves its performance. The results are demonstrated on recorded speech data and compared with the conventional Levinson-Durbin algorithm. Finally it is interesting to note that the reason for this reduced-rank performance gain is not related to limited training data for the predictive filter.

We study the problem of rate-distortion-equivocation with side-information only available at the decoder when an independent private random key is shared between the sender and the receiver. The sender compresses the sequence, and the receiver reconstructs it such that the average distortion between the source and the output is limited. The equivocation is measured at an eavesdropper that intercepts the source encoded message, utilizing side-information correlated with the source and the side-information at the decoder. We have derived the entire achievable rate-distortion-equivocation region for this problem.

We consider a layered approach to source coding with side information received over an uncertain channel that minimizes expected distortion. Specifically, we assume a Gaussian source encoder whereby the decoder receives a compressed version of the symbol at a given rate, as well as an uncompressed version over a separate side-information channel with slow fading and noise. The decoder knows the realization of the slow fading but the encoder knows only its distribution. We consider a layered encoding strategy with a base layer describing the source assuming worst-case fading on the side-information channel, and subsequent layers describing the source under better fading conditions. Optimization of the layering scheme utilizes the Heegard-Berger rate-distortion function that describes the rate required to meet a different distortion constraint for each fading state. When the side-information channel has two discrete fading states, we obtain closed-form expressions for the optimal rate allocation between the fading states and the resulting minimum expected distortion. For multiple fading states, the minimum expected distortion is formulated as the solution of a convex optimization problem. Under discretized Rayleigh fading, we show that the optimal rate allocation puts almost all rate into the base layer associated with the worst-case fading. This implies that uncertain side information yields little performance benefit over no side information. Moreover, as the source coding rate increases, the benefit of uncertain side-information decreases.

For point-to-point and distributed communication of continuous sources, high-resolution quantization theory provides an achievable rate-distortion trade-off that is simple to compute and motivates practical compression architectures. Moreover, high-resolution analysis gives good inner bounds for the Shannon rate-distortion region when a more general characterization is difficult. In this paper, we analyze the sum-rate gap between coded nonuniform scalar quantization and the Shannon ratedistortion region for a system that requires fidelity in a computation applied to the source variables. We find that the loss can be as low as 0.255 bits/sample, which has previously been observed in the point-to-point setting, and it is achieved using a simple architecture of nonuniform quantization followed by Slepian-Wolf coding.

In this paper we study the rate distortion trade off for source coding with side information at the decoder. This problem was posed and investigated by Wyner and Ziv. We call this problem the Wyner-Ziv source coding problem. In this paper we study the Wyner-Ziv source coding problem for a class of information sources with memory. For this class of information sources we give explicit inner and outer bounds of the rate distortion region.

In many classification problems of interest, it is desirable to not only classify accurately but also to have access to the "raw data" that was used to do the classification. This naturally leads to the concept of joint classification and compression under system communication (or bandwidth) constraints. A typical system involves a complexity-constrained remote sensing unit and a central processing unit. In this paper, we will address the case of a single remote sensing unit (encoder) and a central processing unit (decoder) and a finite bit rate constraint to abstract the bandwidth-limited channel between the encoder and decoder. The goal is to spend this bit budget in the optimal sense, in terms of classification performance (minimize probability of classification error) as well as to enable reconstruction of the raw data with maximum fidelity (in the rate-distortion sense). © 2003 IEEE.

Communication latency plays a key role in time critical control applications in dynamical cyber-physical systems. It is in particular influenced by source coding algorithms which are typically developed independently of the process dynamics driven at the nodes of networked control systems. This is a note on model-based source coding, providing a state-dependent coding strategy. Therfore we confine our discussion to the simple case-study of Markov chains. Our goal is to minimize the expected codeword length of transmitted information by accounting for the process dynamics.

We develop a general framework to prove Kraft-type inequalities for prefix-free permutation codes for source coding with various notions of permutation code and prefix. We also show that the McMillan-type converse theorem in most of these cases fails, and give a general form of a counterexample. Our approach is more general and works for other structures besides permutation codes. The classical Kraft inequality for prefix-free codes and results about permutation codes follow as corollaries of our main theorem and main counterexample.
