We consider a secure lossy source coding problem with the presence of an eavesdropper who has access to the source description. An encoder wants to compress the source in such a way that the intended decoder can reconstruct the source sequence and satisfy a distortion criterion, while revealing only limited knowledge about the source to the eavesdropper. In our system an action sequence is generated based on the source description with some costs to influence the side information available to the legitimate decoder and the eavesdropper. We provide a complete characterization of the rate-distortion-cost-equivocation region for a discrete source with correlated action-dependent side information at the decoders. The result serves as a fundamental limit for example in secure sensor networking.

We introduce a scheme for the binary one-help-one distributed source coding problem using two layers of codes. The primary code is of constant finite block-length and the secondary code has a block-length approaching infinity. The achievable rate-distortion region for this scheme is derived for the binary one-help-one problem. It is shown that the scheme achieves the common component rate-distortion region in the case when the sources have a common component, while if a common component is not present (i.e. replaced with highly correlated functions of the two inputs) it improves upon existing achievable bounds. We show that as the block-length of the primary code is increased, the transmission rate required in the scheme decreases, reaches its minimum at some finite value and then increases. This phenomenon is not typically seen in traditional schemes used in multi-terminal source coding.

In this paper, we present iterative algorithms that numerically compute the rate-distortion regions of two problems: the two-encoder multiterminal source coding problem and the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) problem, both under logarithmic loss distortion measure. With the clear connection of these models with the distributed information bottleneck method, the proposed algorithms may find usefulness in a variety of applications, such as clustering, pattern recognition and learning. We illustrate the efficiency of our algorithms through some numerical examples.

This paper treats point-to-point, multiple access and random access lossless source coding in the finite-blocklength regime. A random coding technique is developed, and its power in analyzing the third-order coding performance is demonstrated in all three scenarios. Results include a third-order-optimal characterization of the Slepian-Wolf rate region and a proof showing that for dependent sources, the independent encoders used by Slepian-Wolf codes can achieve the same third-order-optimal performance as a single joint encoder. The concept of random access source coding, which generalizes the multiple access scenario to allow for a subset of participating encoders that is unknown a priori to both the encoders and the decoder, is introduced. Contributions include a new definition of the probabilistic model for a random access-discrete multiple source, a general random access source coding scheme that employs a rateless code with sporadic feedback, and an analysis demonstrating via a random coding argument that there exists a deterministic code of the proposed structure that simultaneously achieves the third-order-optimal performance of Slepian-Wolf codes for all possible subsets of encoders.

This paper introduces a mutually beneficial interplay between network coding and scalable video source coding in order to propose an energy-efficient video streaming approach accommodating multiple heterogeneous receivers, for which current solutions are either inefficient or insufficient. State of the art in media streaming typically acknowledges network and source coding being complementary. Despite this, these research topics are treated separately. By cultivating advantageous behaviour and features in the network and source coding structures a correlation between coding complexity and channel quality is developed. A linear coding structure designed to gracefully encapsulate layered source coding provides both low complexity of the utilised linear coding while enabling robust erasure correction in the form of fountain coding capabilities. The proposed linear coding structure advocates efficient support of multi-resolution video streaming.

Consider a multi-resolution source code for describing a stationary source at L resolutions. The description at the first resolution is given at rate R-1 and achieves an expected distortion no greater than D-1. The description at the second resolution includes both the first description and a refining description of rate R-2 and achieves expected distortion no greater than D-2, and so on. Recently derived multi-resolution source coding bounds describe the family of achievable rate and distortion vectors ((R-1, R-2...,R-L), (D-1, D-2,...,D-L)). By examining these multi resolution rate-distortion bounds, we gain insight into the problem of practical multiresolution source coding. These insights lead to a new multi-resolution source code based on the tree-structured vector quantizer. This paper covers the algorithm, its optimal design, and preliminary experimental results.

We study a problem in which a source is encoded into n packets, any t of which may be altered in an arbitrary way by Byzantine adversaries. The decoder receives the n packets and, without knowing which packets were altered, seeks to reconstruct the original source to meet a distortion constraint. We examine a layered architecture for this problem that separates the lossy compression from the coding for adversarial errors. We show that this architecture is optimal in the binary-Hamming and quadratic-Gaussian cases yet suboptimal in general. Our optimality proofs use characterizations of the size of a maximal set with a given diameter in Hamming and Euclidean spaces.

We consider a real-time streaming source coding system in which an encoder observes a sequence of randomly arriving symbols from an i.i.d. source, and feeds binary code-words to a FIFO buffer that outputs one bit per time unit to a decoder. Each source symbol represents a status update by the source, and the timeliness of the system is quantified by the age of information (AoI), defined as the time difference between the present time and the generation time of the most up-to-date symbol at the output of the decoder. When the FIFO buffer is allowed to be empty, we propose an optimal prefix-free lossless coding scheme that minimizes the average peak age based on the analysis of discrete-time Geo/G/1 queue. For more practical scenarios in which a special codeword is reserved for indicating an empty buffer, we propose an encoding scheme that assigns a codeword to the empty buffer state based on an estimate of the buffer idle time.

In order to cost-effectively serve a large number of users, video-on-demand (VoD) content providers often place distributed servers close to user pools. These servers have heterogeneous streaming and storage capacities, and collaboratively share contents with each other. A critical challenge is how to optimize movie storage and retrieval so as to minimize system deployment cost due to server streaming, server storage, and network transmission between servers. Using a general and comprehensive cost model, we propose a novel VoD architecture using linear source coding. All the movies are source-encoded once at the repository, by coding k source symbols of movie m to n((m)) source-coded symbols. These coded symbols are then distributed to the servers. We optimize n((m)) and the number of symbols to retrieve from each server for a request. Our solution approaches asymptotically to global optimum as k increases. We show that even when k is low (say, 30), near optimality can be achieved. Furthermore, the solutions on n((m)), symbol distribution and retrieval can be efficiently computed with a linear program (LP). Through extensive simulation, our algorithm is shown to achieve substantially the lowest cost, outperforming traditional and state-of-the-art heuristics by a significantly wide margin (by multiple times in many cases).
