We determine the rate region of a source coding problem with common reconstruction and action-dependent side information where an action sequence is taken by an encoder over a rate-limited link. We show that the rate region depends only on the sum-rate and the sum-rate distortion and cost function is characterized. The result serves as a fundamental limit in transmission scenarios where the encoder wants to control and monitor the quality of the decoder's reconstruction via the respective uses of action sequences and a common reconstruction constraint.

New mobile communication system design for Rayleigh environments based on compressed sensing-source coding

A new end-to-end communication system is proposed to increase transmission speed, robustness, and security in order to meet the requirements of mobile systems that know an exponentially increasing data amount over time. The design relies on the use of compressed sensing-source coding instead of the supported speech coding standards in actual mobile communication systems. The proposed compressed sensing-source coding method allows reducing the speech coding complexity by using simple quantisation and binary encoding, saving communication system resources, and encrypting communications without additional costs. The performance of the resulting communication system is evaluated for speech communication via 10 dB Rayleigh environment in terms of perceptual evaluation of speech quality (PESQ) scores and coherence speech intelligibility index (CSII) when convolutional coding, orthogonal frequency division multiplexing, and diversity schemes are used. Results report that for a bit rate of 12.8 kbit/s the proposed scheme achieves fair speech intelligibility justified by a CSII value of 0.5, and offers good output speech quality measure, providing a PESQ of 3.33 for the same bit rate.

Large Alphabet source coding Using Independent Component Analysis

Large alphabet source coding is a basic and well-studied problem in data compression. It has many applications, such as compression of natural language text, speech, and images. The classic perception of most commonly used methods is that a source is best described over an alphabet, which is at least as large as the observed alphabet. In this paper, we challenge this approach and introduce a conceptual framework in which a large alphabet source is decomposed into "as statistically independent as possible" components. This decomposition allows us to apply entropy encoding to each component separately, while benefiting from their reduced alphabet size. We show that in many cases, such decomposition results in a sum of marginal entropies which is only slightly greater than the entropy of the source. Our suggested algorithm, based on a generalization of the binary independent component analysis, is applicable for a variety of large alphabet source coding setups. This includes the classical lossless compression, universal compression, and high-dimensional vector quantization. In each of these setups, our suggested approach outperforms most commonly used methods. Moreover, our proposed framework is significantly easier to implement in most of these cases.

Distributed source coding using symbol-based and non-binary turbo codes - applications to wireless sensor networks

A simple but powerful scheme for distributed source coding (DSC) based on the concept of binning and syndromes and non traditional turbo codes is proposed. The previous works on the compression with side information using turbo codes and the binning technique are focused on binary turbo codes. The source is considered to be binary or is converted to a binary stream. This conversion, however, reduces the redundancy that could be exploited by the compression algorithm. To achieve higher compression efficiency, the authors propose using a scheme based on a turbo decoder that decides over symbols rather than bits. In the same direction and for further performance improvement, at the cost of increased encoder complexity, they also present a DSC scheme based on non-binary turbo codes. The results demonstrate improved performance. Based on the suggested algorithms, a scheme for gathering real data in wireless sensor networks and assess the corresponding energy savings is proposed.

Necessary conditions for asymptotically optimal sliding-block or stationary codes for source coding and rate-constrained simulation of memoryless sources are presented and used to motivate a design technique for trellis-encoded source coding and rate-constrained simulation. The code structure has intuitive similarities to classic random coding arguments as well as to "fake process" methods and alphabet-constrained methods. Experimental evidence shows that the approach provides comparable or superior performance in comparison with previously published methods on common examples, sometimes by significant margins.

This paper considers the problem of source coding with side information at the decoder, also called Slepian-Wolf source coding scheme. In practical applications of this coding scheme, the statistical relation between the source and the side information can vary from one data transmission to another, and there is a need to adapt the coding rate depending on the current statistical relation. In this paper, we propose a novel rate-adaptive code construction based on LDPC codes for the Slepian-Wolf source coding scheme. The proposed code design method allows to optimize the code degree distributions at all the considered rates, while minimizing the amount of short cycles in the parity check matrices at all rates. Simulation results show that the proposed method greatly reduces the source coding rate compared to the standard low density parity check accumulated (LDPCA) solution.

LDPC Code-Based Distributed source coding With an Efficient Message Passing Mechanism for the Compression of Correlated Image sources

Different from traditional source coding techniques, distributed source coding (DSC) techniques rely on independent encoding at the encoding end but joint decoding at the decoding end to compress image sources which exhibit correlation. Channel code-based DSC techniques compress correlated image sources by fully utilizing such correlation. However, in addition to this correlation information, the current symbol of most real image sources is correlated to the preceding or subsequent symbols. Such correlation information should also play an important role for improving the compression performance of channel code-based DSC schemes. To this end, we present an efficient message passing mechanism for LDPC Code-based DSC schemes (ELCDSC) to compress correlated image sources. By utilizing this message passing mechanism, we enable LDPC code-based DSC techniques to not only make full use of the inter-source correlation to assist compression, but also integrate the intra-source correlation in each message passing iteration to improve the compression performance. It is the first that enables LDPC code-based DSC techniques to achieve the utilization of both intra- and inter-source correlations in the message passing mechanism. Experimental results reveal that ELCDSC significantly enhances the compression ratio of correlated image sources, surpassing other DSC schemes.

Gaussian source coding based on variance-mismatched three-level scalar quantisation using Q-function approximations

This study deals with three-level scalar quantisation of a Gaussian source, followed by Huffman encoder, especially suitable for signal compression purposes. The variance-matched and variance-mismatched versions of quantiser are considered. Simple approximate closed-form expressions for performance evaluation in terms of signal-to-quantisation-noise ratio and bit rate are derived using the corresponding Q-function approximations. The accuracy of the derived formulas is tested using the relative error as a measure of performance. It is shown that the derived formulas for variance-matched (for a reference variance) and variance-mismatched (in a wide range of input signal variances) provide higher accuracy in comparison to baselines using other available Q-function approximations or available approximate formulas for non-uniform scalar quantisation of Gaussian source.

In this work, we address the capacity region of multi-source multi-terminal network communication problems, and study the change in capacity when one moves form independent to dependent source information. Specifically, we ask whether the trade off between capacity and source independence is of continuous nature. We tie the question at hand to that of edge removal which has seen recent interest.

We consider source coding of audio signals with the help of a generative model. We use a construction where a waveform is first quantized, yielding a finite bitrate representation. The waveform is then reconstructed by random sampling from a model conditioned on the quantized waveform. The proposed coding scheme is theoretically analyzed. Using SampleRNN as the generative model, we demonstrate that the proposed coding structure provides performance competitive with state-of-the-art source coding tools for specific categories of audio signals.
