Multiple description coding (MDC) is applied for delay-sensitive data traffic to alleviate interruptions caused by primary users in cognitive radio systems. For Gaussian source, a simplified algorithm for the exhaustive search of optimal distortions and rates is proposed based on the achievable region of coding rates and delay requirement. For practical realtime image coding, source splitting is applied to generate multiple descriptions. When there is a single channel, two successive descriptions are composed of large and small coefficients in discrete cosine transform (DCT) domain, respectively. When there are two channels, even and odd coefficients in DCT domain are used to construct two parallel descriptions. Numerical results show that MDC can effectively combat the interruptions caused by primary users in cognitive radio systems.

Two problems concerning arbitrarily varying stationary Markov source (AVMS), namely, the binary hypothesis testing and the source coding problems are solved. First, we consider a logarithmically asymptotically optimal (LAO) hypothesis testing (HT) for distributions of AVMS. The asymptotic behavior of the second type error probability exponent is investigated in function of the first type error probability exponent, as the number of observations tends to infinity. In the problem of AVMS coding, the E-optimal rate function R(E) (the minimum rate R of the source sequences compression when the decoding error probability is less than exp{-NE}, (E > 0) and its inverse reliability function E(R) are obtained from the corresponding HT result.

Dispensed source coding with previous knowledge (DSPK) is a method used in the lossless compression of scientific volume photos. DSPK strategies make use of predictive earlier know-how to improve the compression of clinical extent pics and reduce the bit rate of lossless compression. DSPK works by way of combining techniques of records compression, specifically distributed supply coding and asymptotic Wyner-Ziv coding. With DSPK, the supply coding block is divided into two parts: a predictive stage and a coding level. Within the predictive degree, earlier expertise is used to reduce the amount of statistics to be compressed, even as in the coding degree, a Wyner-Ziv code is used to compress the ultimate information. The predictive degree makes use of a studying algorithm to construct a dictionary for each block, primarily based on facts. It allows the set of rules to leverage redundancy within the facts better and acquires higher compression ratios. Moreover, the bigger the source block size, the higher the advantage of the earlier understanding inside the predictive stage. Subsequently, the coded block is output as a binary movement, taking into account quick and green transmission and storage. This paper deals with a fixed-length lossy source coding problem with some excess distortion probability called the source coding problem with ε-fidelity criterion. In this problem, the rate-distortion function and the distortion-rate function have already been characterized for i.i.d. sources with an additive distortion measure in the sense of first-order and second-order coding rates. However, general formulas for these functions have not been revealed up to present. Hence, in this paper we derive general formulas for the rate-distortion function and the distortion-rate function with the ε-fidelity criterion in both of the first-order and second-order cases. A relationship between our general formulas and previous results are also discussed.

Network impairments such as delay and packet losses have severe impact on the presentation quality of many predictive video sources. Interleaved source coding (ISC) is one of the error resilient coding methods for predictive video coded frames transmitted over single erasure channel. ISC has shown to significantly improve the overall quality of predictive coded video stream over a lossy channel. In this paper, ISC is evaluated over channels with memory. In particular, we analyze the impact of packet correlation of the popular Gilbert model on ISC-based packet video over a wide range of packet loss probabilities. Simulations have shown that ISC advances the traditional method as either the loss rate increase or the packet correlation decreases.

Image authentication is important in content delivery via untrusted intermediaries, such as peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing. Many differently encoded versions of the original image might exist. On the other hand, intermediaries might tamper with the contents. Distinguishing the legitimate diversity of encodings from malicious manipulation is the challenge addressed in this paper. We develop a novel approach based on distributed source coding for the problem of backward-compatible image authentication. The key idea is to provide a Slepian-Wolf encoded quantized image projection as authentication data. This version can be correctly decoded only with the help of an authentic image as side information. Distributed source coding provides the desired robustness against legitimate encoding variations, while detecting illegitimate modification. We demonstrate false acceptance rates close to zero for authentication data sizes that are only a few percent of the compressed image size.

We generalize the Wyner-Ziv source coding problem with side-information at the decoder to the case where the encoder is required to be able to compute the decoder's reconstruction sequence with some fidelity. This requirement limits the extent to which the reconstruction sequence can depend on the side-information, which is not available to the encoder. For finite-alphabet memoryless sources and single-letter distortion measures we compute the minimal description rate as a function of the joint law of the source and side-information and of the allowed distortions at the encoder and decoder. We also treat memoryless Gaussian sources with mean squared-error distortion measures.

The problem of investigating how close the performance of the best nth order block code can be to the rate distortion limit is known as the redundancy problem of lossy source coding. The difference between the performance of a block code and the rate distortion limit is called the redundancy of the block code. We investigate the redundancy of nth order block coding in the case of abstract source and reproduction alphabets. We obtain results similar to the positive redundancy results of Zhang, Yang and Wei (see IEEE Trans. Inform. Theory, vol.43, no.1, p.71-91, 1997) on lossy source coding with finite alphabets.

Media authentication is important in content delivery via untrusted intermediaries, such as peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing. Many differently encoded versions of a media file might exist. Our previous work applied distributed source coding not only to distinguish the legitimate diversity of encoded images from tampering but also to localize tampered regions in an image already deemed to be in authentic. In both cases, authentication requires a Slepian-Wolf encoded image projection that is supplied to the decoder. We extend our scheme to authenticate images that have undergone affine warping. Our approach incorporates an expectation maximization algorithm into the Slepian-Wolf decoder. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm can distinguish legitimate encodings of authentic images from illegitimately modified versions, despite an arbitrary affine warping, using authentication data of less than 250 bytes per image.

This paper proposes the conditional LZ complexity and analyzes its property. Especially, we show an inequality corresponding to Ziv's inequality concerning a distinct parsing of a pair of sequences. Further, as a byproduct of the result, we show a simple proof of the asymptotical optimality of Ziv's universal source coding algorithm with side information.
