Recently, non-contact vital signs monitoring based on bio-radar has made great progress. However, because the wireless signal is greatly interfered by noise, subjects need to face the radar sensor in the forward direction for measurements. In this paper, an Amplitude and Phase joint optimization-based Heartbeat and Respiration separation algorithm using IR-UWB radar (AP-HR) is proposed. Different from other research, we explore the possibility of different information fusions of IR-UWB radar. The complementarity of amplitude and phase is introduced for vital signs monitoring. The correlation between the two signals determines the position index of vital signs. After the feature fusion, we calculate breathing rate using FFT and employ a neural network based on Temporal Convolutional Network (TCN) for heart rate prediction. A radar signal dataset containing 13 persons is set up to evaluate the performance of AP-HR, encompassing three positions: sitting forward (SF), sitting sideways (SS), and sitting with their back to the radar (SB). The experimental results demonstrate that the average Mean Absolute Error (MAE) for heart rate prediction is 1.18 bpm, and for breathing rate prediction is 2.15 bpm, significantly lower than traditional methods. These results indicate that the method can achieve contactless and accurate heart rate and breathing rate monitoring in different scenarios. The source code and radar signal dataset are public.

We study sequential streaming of Gauss-Markov sources over a burst-erasure channel. In any sliding window of length L, the channel introduces a single erasure burst of maximum length B. The encoder observes a sequence of vector Gaussian sources, where the vectors are i.i.d. across the spatial dimension and correlated across the temporal dimension. The encoder output can depend on all source vectors observed up to that time but not on any future source vectors. The decoder is required to reconstruct the source vectors instantaneously and within a quadratic distortion constraint of D, except those source vectors that either appear during the erasure periods or a recovery period of W following each erasure burst. We focus on time-invariant encoders and establish upper and lower bounds on the minimum compression rate R(L, B, W, D). Our lower bound is obtained by making connection to a Gaussian multi-terminal source coding problem. The upper bound is based on distributed source coding, but requires a careful analysis of the achievable rate. Numerical comparisons indicate that the proposed technique provides significant gains over other baseline schemes.

Out-of-distribution issues lead to different optimization directions between clients, which weakens collaborative modeling in federated learning. Existing methods aims to decouple invariant features in the latent space to mitigate attribute bias. However, their performance is limited by suboptimal decoupling capabilities in complex latent spaces. To address this problem, this paper presents a method, termed FedAKD, that adaptively identifies meaningful visual regions in images to guide the model in learning causal features. It includes two main modules, where the attentive modeling module adaptively locates critical regions to mitigate the negative impact of irrelevant elements, which are considered significant contributors to distribution heterogeneity. The attention-guided representation learning module leverages attentive knowledge to guide the local model to pay more attention to important regions, which acts as a soft attention regularizer to mitigate the trade-off between capturing category-relevant information and irrelevant contextual information in images. Experiments were conducted on four datasets, including performance comparison, ablation study, and case study. The results demonstrate that FedAKD can effectively enhance attention to causal features, which leads to superior performance compared with the state-of-the-art methods. Multiple description coding (MDC) is a technique used to obtain two or more (often correlated) descriptions of a source, which are transmitted over different channels to the receiver. These descriptions of the source support two levels of reconstruction quality. When all the descriptions are received and used in the reconstruction, the source can be reconstructed with high fidelity. When only a subset of the descriptions is received, the quality of reconstruction should still be acceptable. In this work, we introduce MDC (with two descriptions) in the context of classification based subband coding. We develop an efficient MDC scheme using multiple description scalar quantizers and present a greedy algorithm to allocate rates and redundancies among the classified subbands.

We give an operational definition of information-theoretic resources within a given multipartite classical or quantum correlation. We present our causal model that serves as the source coding side of this correlation and introduce a novel concept of resource rate. We argue that, beyond classical secrecy, additional resources exist that are useful for the security of distributed computing problems, which can be captured by the resource rate. Furthermore, we establish a relationship between resource rate and an extension of Shannon's logarithmic information measure, namely, total correlation.

In the present noisy intermediate scale quantum computing era, there is a critical need to devise methods for the efficient implementation of gate-based variational quantum circuits. This ensures that a range of proposed applications can be deployed on real quantum hardware. The efficiency of quantum circuit is desired both in the number of trainable gates and the depth of the overall circuit. The major concern of barren plateaus has made this need for efficiency even more acute. The problem of efficient quantum circuit realization has been extensively studied in the literature to reduce gate complexity and circuit depth. Another important approach is to design a method to reduce the parameter complexity in a variational quantum circuit. Existing methods include hyperparameter-based parameter pruning which introduces an additional challenge of finding the best hyperparameters for different applications. In this paper, we present QAdaPrune - an adaptive parameter pruning algorithm that automatically determines the threshold and then intelligently prunes the redundant and non-performing parameters. We show that the resulting sparse parameter sets yield quantum circuits that perform comparably to the unpruned quantum circuits and in some cases may enhance trainability of the circuits even if the original quantum circuit gets stuck in a barren plateau. Compiler tuning through external mechanisms such as source code modifications, e.g., with pragmas, and adjusting compiler flags - is well-explored. Many researchers have shown significant performance improvement through different approaches, including heuristics and machine learning. Most of these approaches, however, require a few hundred iterations to converge towards an optimal answer. A number of studies have addressed this problem by reducing the number of iterations required, but we find that further improvements are still possible. In this work, we explore the optimization of GCC compiler flag settings with the goal of faster convergence. We find as an ancillary result that the effectiveness of the compilation itself is sometimes improved with respect to both code size reduction and application program execution time. The proposed graph-based approach can reduce the code size to 90 % of the convergence point with 15 compilations fewer on average, i.e., the solution found after running Opentuner for many compilations. It also can reduce the execution time over the -O3 level for different versions of the Smith-Waterman and Bubble Sort by $1.2 \times$ and $5 \times$ , respectively.

With the rapid changes of modern power grids, modeling and simulation of these systems become increasingly important. For these tasks, various specialized proprietary and open tools exist. Since every tool has its strengths and weaknesses, it is often beneficial to analyze the same system with multiple different tools. However, as most of these tools come with their own distinct data format, this requires a conversion of models. In the present paper, we introduce new model conversion methods based on a novel generic representation for power system models. This representation is based on a graph data structure comprising flexible power system component models. We evaluate the implementation of these new methods by converting an IEEE 39 bus system model from DIgSILENT PowerFactory to Matpower, Simscape Electrical, and RSCAD FX using the newly developed methods and existing methods. The resulting models are compared with the original PowerFactory model using power flow, RMS and EMT simulations. The source code of the presented modeling format and methods is released to the community for transparency and further development.

Android applications collecting data from users must protect it according to the current legal frameworks. Such data protection has become even more important since the European Union rolled out the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). Since app developers are not legal experts, they find it difficult to write privacy-aware source code. Moreover, they have limited tool support to reason about data protection throughout their app development process. This paper motivates the need for a static analysis approach to diagnose and explain data protection in Android apps. The analysis will recognize personal data sources in the source code, and aims to further examine the data flow originating from these sources. App developers can then address key questions about data manipulation, derived data, and the presence of technical measures. Despite challenges, we explore to what extent one can realize this analysis through static taint analysis, a common method for identifying security vulnerabilities. This is a first step towards designing a tool-based approach that aids app developers and assessors in ensuring data protection in Android apps, based on automated static program analysis. We consider a variable-length source coding problem subject to local decodability constraints. In particular, we investigate the blocklength scaling behavior attainable by encodings of r-sparse binary sequences, under the constraint that any source bit can be correctly decoded upon probing at most d codeword bits. We consider both adaptive and non-adaptive access models, and derive upper and lower bounds that often coincide up to constant factors. Notably, such a characterization for the fixed-blocklength analog of our problem remains unknown, despite considerable research efforts. Connections to communication complexity are also briefly discussed.
