An optimal joint source-channel coding (OJSCC) scheme is developed for memoryless generalized Gaussian distribution (GGD) sources encoding and transmission over noisy channels. Two channel models are studied, binary symmetric channels (BSC) for memoryless channels and Gilbert-Elliott channels (GEC) for bursty channels. The operational rate-distortion (R-D) function we adopted represents an end-to-end error measurement that includes errors due to both quantization and channel noise. In particular, we are able to incorporate both the channel transition probability and channel bit error rate in the case of bursty channels. With the operational R-D function, we can achieve an optimum tradeoff between source coding accuracy and channel error protection under a fixed transmission rate. Experiments show that for BSC, OJSCC outperforms the best channel optimized scalar quantization (COSQ) system at high bit rate constraint; while for GEC, we show that the optimal design achieves better performance than the popular designs based on either the average BER or the worst BER. Moreover, based on the results of OJSCC, we propose a robust joint source-channel coding (RJSCC) scheme based on a combination of OJSCC with allpass filtering, RJSCC can be applied to a broad class of GGD sources with shape factor /spl nu/<2.0 to achieve an improved transmission performance.

This paper considers Web layout design in the spirit of source coding for data compression and rate distortion theory, with the aim of minimizing the average size of files downloaded during Web browsing sessions. The novel aspect here is that the object of design is layout rather than codeword selection, and is subject to navigability constraints. This produces statistics for file transfers that are heavy tailed, completely unlike standard Shannon theory, and provides a natural and plausible explanation for the origin of observed power laws in Web traffic. We introduce a series of theoretical and simulation models for optimal Web layout design with varying levels of analytic tractability and realism with respect to modeling of structure, hyperlinks, and user behavior. All models produce power laws which are striking both for their consistency with each other and with observed data, and their robustness to modeling assumptions. These results suggest that heavy tails are a permanent and ubiquitous feature of Internet traffic, and not an artifice of current applications or user behavior. They also suggest new ways of thinking about protocol design that combines insights from information and control theory with traditional networking.

A key constraint in mobile communications is the reliance on a battery with a limited energy supply. Efficiently utilizing the available energy is therefore an important design consideration. We consider a situation where a video sequence is to be compressed and transmitted over a wireless channel. The goal is to limit the amount of distortion in the received video sequence while using the minimum required transmission energy. To accomplish this goal, we consider error resilience and concealment techniques, at the source coding level, as well as the dynamic allocation of physical layer communication resources. We consider these approaches jointly in a novel framework. We formulate an optimization problem that corresponds to minimizing the energy required to transmit a video frame with an acceptable level of distortion. We present methods for solving this problem and other extensions.

Highly efficient and robust source coding, channel coding, packetization and RAKE receiver techniques are proposed for video streaming over wireless ATM in WCDMA systems. At the base station, video received from the wireline source is dynamically transformed to match both the hardware capabilities of mobile hosts and the time-varying wireless channel conditions. For the wireless transmitter and receiver, source coding, channel coding, packetization and RAKE receiver are jointly implemented as part of the application. For source coding, we proposed to use three-dimensional significance-linked connected component analysis video coding. For channel coding and packetization, we used turbo coding. Since wireless channel is time varying and there is deep fading, we adopted a pilot structure in each slot, and a RAKE receiver. The channel estimation adopted an adaptive Kalman filter channel to track the time-varying channel based on an AR model. Extensive performance evaluation demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed wireless video streaming technique.

This paper introduces a novel switching method which can be used to combine two or more PPM models. The work derives from our earlier work on modelling English and text mining, and the approach takes advantage of both to help improve the compression performance significantly. The performance of the combination of models is at least as good as (and in many cases significantly better than) the best performed of the individual models. The paper reviews PPM-based text mining as it underpins the approach taken by the algorithm. It describes how PPM models are combined by applying a novel variation of the Viterbi algorithm. Results are then presented, followed by a discussion of related work, with conclusions.

We consider the case of two correlated binary information sequences. Instead of compressing the information using source coding, both sequences are independently channel encoded, and transmitted over an AWGN channel. The correlation between both sequences is exploited at the receiver, allowing reliable communications at signal to noise ratios very close to the theoretical limits established by the combination of Shannon and Slepian-Wolf theorems.
