Many modern analog media coders employ some form of entropy coding (EC). Usually, a simple per-letter EC is used to keep the coder's complexity and price low. In some coders, individual symbols are grouped into small fixed-size vectors before EC is applied. We extend this approach to form variable-size vector EC (VSVEC) in which vector sizes may be from 1 to several hundreds. The method is, however, complexity-constrained in the sense that the vector size is always as large as allowed by a pre-set complexity limit. The idea is studied in the framework of a modified discrete cosine transform (MDCT) coder. It is shown experimentally, using diverse audio material, that a rate reduction of about 37% can be achieved. The method is, however, not specific to MDCT coding but can be incorporated in various speech, audio, image and video coders.

Previously, joint source channel techniques mostly focused on systems using fixed-length coding, even though variable-length coding (VLC) is widely used, particularly in video coding. Typically, VLC bit streams are made channel-robust through packetization and standard forward-error correction (FEC). However, when the channel conditions are fairly mild, FEC can reveal itself bandwidth-inefficient. A variable-rate extension of joint source channel decoding could thus potentially replace FEC under mild conditions or, for noisier channels, could be used together with FEC to ameliorate the coding rate, extending in both cases the range of situations under which the bit stream is adequately protected. We propose two reduced-complexity VLC soft-input decoding techniques, as well as a comparison with existing algorithms. Experimental results of a new proposed VLC decoding algorithm show very good performance and low complexity.

This contribution deals with a robust decoding approach of source codec parameters called softbit-source decoding. It can be considered as an error concealment technique which estimates codec parameters at the receiver utilizing the residual redundancy remaining after source coding and the channel decoder reliability information. We apply the turbo-principle to softbit-source decoding. We derive a formula that shows how different terms of residual redundancy can be transformed into independent extrinsic information utilizable in iterative processes. After introducing a new, iterative approach to softbit-source decoding, we analyze the influences of different bit mappings and of the number of iterations. Finally, the new approach is compared to conventional techniques with respect to performance and complexity.

The convergence of multimedia applications, which include such diverse sources as video, audio and computer data, places harsh demands on the communications process. source coding is an important step in the communications process. A good source-coding scheme is characterized by its high efficiency in removing redundancy inherent in the information source. It should also ensure data integrity and be suitable for different data types. Codeword synchronization is an important aspect of any data communications system, whether it is a wireline or wireless system. Traditionally, block codes are used for source coding to reduce uncertainties in synchronization. The authors propose the application of minimal sync-delay T-codes for information source coding. The aim is to facilitate widespread deployment of efficient codes that also have intrinsically strong synchronizing performance.

We present a new multiple description source coding scheme based on tree-structured vector quantization (TSVQ). In this scheme, the codebook of each decoder is organized in a binary tree. The encoding is greedy and based on a sequence of binary decisions as in traditional TSVQ. Each binary decision of the encoder corresponds to adding information on one of the available channels and the encoding complexity can be shown to be proportional to the total bitrate. We describe the encoder structure for the two-channel case, and propose an entropy-constrained design algorithm based on marginal return analysis. Experimental results on a Gaussian source are presented for various design parameters and the generalization of the scheme to more than two channels is outlined.

An integrated framework of optimal rate allocation for video coding is presented in the case of transmission over wireless channels without feedback channels. For a fixed channel bit rate and finite number of channel coding rate, the proposed scheme can find the optimal source and channel coding pair and corresponding robust video coding scheme such that the expected end-to-end distortion of video signals can be minimized. With the, assumption that encoder has the stochastic channel information, the proposed scheme takes into account robust video coding, channel coding and packetization, error concealment techniques altogether. Simulation results show the accuracy and optimality of the proposed method.

A source coding technique for variable, bandwidth-constrained channels such as the Internet must do two things: offer high quality at low data rates, and adapt gracefully to changes in available bandwidth. Here we propose an audio coding algorithm that is superior on both counts. It is inherently scalable, meaning that channel conditions can be matched without the need for additional computation. Moreover, it is compact: in subjective tests our algorithm, coded at 32 kb/s/channel, outperformed MPEG-1 Layer 3 (MP3) coded at 56 kb/s/channel (both at 44.1 kHz). We achieve this simultaneous increase in compression and scalability through use of a two-dimensional transform that concentrates relevant information into a small number of coefficients.

We address digital transmission for enhancing, in a backward compatible way, the quality of analog image transmission systems. We propose a practical algorithm that treats the problem as one of wavelet image compression with side information (available in the form of a noisy analog version of the image) present at the decoder. We propose a rate allocation technique to efficiently allocate the rate among the wavelet coefficients of the image. In typical instances of the problem, we get gain up to 2.5 dB over conventional methods that ignore the side information. Surprisingly, this is typically achieved by modifying a very small fraction of the wavelet coefficients (typically around 10-20%) of the conventional source coder. Extensions of our proposed image transmission framework to that of video transmission finds application in the upgrade of current analog television broadcast systems to digital TV.

We present two new decoding algorithms that estimate the output (path in the trellis) of a Markov source observed through a discrete memoryless channel with special application to convolutional codes. In a change of paradigm, these decoders do not exclusively aim at a low average error probability, but rather try to maximize the contiguously correct decoded subpath (where a subpath begins with the first symbol) - a concept termed far end error decoding. In addition to path estimation, these decoders provide a reliability about each subpath and, thus, enable us to localize the first decoding error without spending additional redundancy. This approach is motivated by the fact that in many applications it is much more important to deliver only error free data to the source decoder rather than to achieve a low error probability. The significant performance gain possible with this new approach is demonstrated for the example of SPIHT coded images.

We study delay and rate constrained transmission of bursty traffic over wireless channels. We characterize the minimum power requirements via bounds for both single user and multiuser downlink problems, using a class of randomized first-come first-served policies. We show that a larger tolerable delay leads to power reduction, even for single-user Gaussian channels; a source coding interpretation is offered for the result. Further, we show that traffic with maximum-delay constraints requires more power than the same traffic with average-delay constraints.
