Inline comments in the source code facilitate easy comprehension, reusability, and enhanced readability. However, code snippets in answers on Q&A sites like Stack Overflow (SO) often lack comments because answerers volunteer their time and often skip comments or explanations due to time constraints. Existing studies show that these online code examples are difficult to read and understand, making it difficult for developers (espe-cially novices) to use them correctly and leading to misuse. Given these challenges, we introduced AUTOGENICS, a tool designed to integrate with SO to generate effective inline comments for code snippets in SO answers exploiting large language models (LLMs). Our contributions are threefold. First, we randomly select 400 answer code snippets (200 Python + 200 Java) from SO and gener-ate inline comments for them using LLMs (e.g., Gemini). We then manually evaluate these comments' effectiveness using four key metrics: accuracy, adequacy, conciseness, and usefulness. Overall, LLMs demonstrate promising effectiveness in generating inline comments for SO answer code snippets. Second, we surveyed 14 active SO users to perceive the effectiveness of these inline comments. The survey results are consistent with our previous manual evaluation. However, according to our evaluation, LLMs-generated comments are less effective for shorter code snippets and sometimes produce noisy comments. Third, to address the gaps, we introduced AUTOGENICS that extracts additional context from question texts and generates context-aware inline comments. It also optimizes comments by removing noise (e.g., comments in import statements and variable declarations). We evaluate the effectiveness of AUTOGENICS-generated comments using the same four metrics that outperform those of standard LLMs. AUTOGENICS might (a) enhance code comprehension with context-aware inline comments, (b) save time, and improve developers' ability to learn and reuse code more accurately.

The component-based design of software projects is a desired property both for development and ease of code comprehension. Programming languages have long allowed component-based development (e.g., Java packages, Python modules); however, other languages, especially C and C++, had stuck to the “translation unit” model where every source file is individually compiled. The Modules system of C++20 was expected to allow cleaner encapsulation of concern. In this paper, we investigate the effort of a (semi-)automatic modularisation of existing C++ projects. Based on our investigation, upgrading existing software systems to the new Modules feature is extremely hard due to coupling issues arising from necessarily legacy design. Implementing real transition requires a significant redesign of both project-internal and user-facing programming interfaces.

The experimental component is an essential method in Engineering education. Sometimes the availability of laboratories and components is compromised, and the COVID-19 pandemic worsened the situation. Resorting to an accurate simulation seems to help this process by allowing students to develop the work, program, test, and validate it. Moreover, it lowers the development time and cost of the prototyping stages of a robotics project. As a multidisciplinary area, robotics requires simulation environments with essential characteristics, such as dynamics, connection to hardware (embedded systems), and other applications. Thus, this paper presents the Simulation environment of SimTwo, emphasizing previous publications with models of sensors, actuators, and simulation scenes. The simulator can be used for free, and the source code is available to the community. Proposed scenes and examples can inspire the development of other simulation scenes to be used in electrical and mechanical Engineering projects.

Currently, we are implementing the code writing problem (CWP) platform for Python programming learning using ***. In the CWP assignment, a student needs to write the answer source code that can pass the unit testing using the given test code on unittest. Since the test result is instantly returned, the student can continue writing the code until reaching the correct one. In this paper, we investigate an application of this CWP platform to Python programming novice students. For investigating the application, we made 24 instances on basic and advance grammar topics in Python programming, and distributed them to 20 students in Japan and Indonesia. Since the use of an integrated development environment (IDE) is common, we suggested them to make the answer codes on VS-code as the most popular IDE. The results found that that most of the students well solved them whereas some students need cares at programming study.

Online Task-Free Continual Learning (OTFCL) aims to learn novel concepts from streaming data without accessing task information. Most memory-based approaches used in OTFCL are not suitable for unsupervised learning because they require accessing supervised signals to implement their sample selection mechanisms. In this study, we address this issue by proposing a novel memory management approach, namely the Dynamic Cluster Memory (DCM), which builds new memory clusters to capture distribution shifts over time without accessing any supervised signals. DCM introduces a novel memory expansion mechanism based on the knowledge discrepancy criterion, which evaluates the novelty of the incoming data as the signal for the memory expansion, ensuring a compact memory capacity. We also propose a new sample selection approach that automatically stores incoming data samples with similar semantic information in the same memory cluster, while also facilitating the knowledge diversity among memory clusters. Further-more, a novel memory pruning approach is proposed to automatically remove overlapping memory clusters through a graph relation evaluation, ensuring a fixed memory capacity while maintaining the diversity among the samples stored in the memory. The proposed DCM is model-free, plug-and-play, and can be used in both supervised and unsupervised learning without modifications. Empirical results on OTFCL experiments show that the proposed DCM outperforms the state-of-the-art while requiring fewer data samples to be stored. We study the problem of remote reconstruction of a continuous signal from its multiple corrupted versions. We are interested in the optimal number of samples and their locations for each corrupted signal to minimize the total reconstruction distortion of the remote signal. The correlation among the corrupted signals can be utilized to reduce the sampling rate. For a class of Gaussian signals, we show that in the low sampling rate region, it is optimal to use a certain nonuniform sampling scheme on all the signals. On the other hand, in the high sampling rate region, it is optimal to uniformly sample all the signals. We also show that both of these sampling strategies are optimal if we are interested in recovering the set of corrupted signals, rather than the remote signal.

Device simulation is an important method of embedded device security analysis, due to the extensive and heterogeneous nature of the current peripherals, the existing simulation technology for peripheral simulation is mostly fuzzy, to find the input and output that meet the firmware requirements as the main goal. In order to construct a template based on IO interface identification to extend the peripheral simulation scheme, this paper identifies the IO interface without firmware source code based on the characteristics of the IO configuration process in MCU firmware. Through experimental comparison, this method has a certain effect in MCU firmware interface recognition.

Spiking Neural Networks (SNNs) are gaining attention as a potential evolution of Artificial Neural Networks, mimicking neural computing like the human brain. Known for their energy efficiency and sparse trigger event-driven operation in neuromorphic computing, SNNs’ resilience against adversarial attacks still needs to be explored. This study assesses large-scale SNNs in medical and non-medical datasets and reveals their inefficiency in medical image classification. We introduced three adversarial attacks on SNNs and observed a significant performance drop with increasing attack severity. We mainly proposed a lightweight SNN-based model that outperforms large-scale SNNs in medical image classification and also found robust against different adversarial attacks. We also introduced a novel metric, Attack Diversion Score, to quantify the performance divergence of SNNs during attacks. Our model, employing spatial learning through time, is memory and power-efficient, hence, suitable for computer-aided diagnosis. Using three datasets, our approach is validated against Spiking ResNet-18 and Spiking VGG-11 and found robust against different data poisoning attacks. We affirm the utility of our model through several quantitative and qualitative measures, which have also proven its effectiveness. The source code of our implementation will be publicly available to foster reproducibility and support future research.

Wyner's soft-covering lemma is the central analysis step for achievability proofs of information theoretic security, resolvability, and channel synthesis. It can also be used for simple achievability proofs in lossy source coding. This work sharpens the claim of soft-covering by moving away from an expected value analysis. Instead, a random codebook is shown to achieve the soft-covering phenomenon with high probability. The probability of failure is super-exponentially small in the block-length, enabling many applications through the union bound. This work gives bounds for both the exponential decay rate of total variation and the second-order codebook rate for soft covering.

We propose a random access scheme with reduced rate retransmissions. The scheme is based on the standard slotted Aloha protocol; but if a collision happens, the colliding and thus corrupted packets is shrinked in size for retransmissions. The size shrinking can be achieved using the widely available multirate scalable source coding techniques. The channel slot splits into minislots and the shrinked packets are transmitted at one randomly chosen minislot. This dual-rate scheme allows significantly higher packet throughput while keeping a decent bit throughput, which is proved both analytically and numerically in this paper.
