The common practice for achieving unequal error protection (UEP) in scalable multimedia communication systems is to design rate-compatible punctured channel codes before computing the UEP rate assignments. This paper proposes a new approach to designing powerful irregular repeat accumulate (IRA) codes that are optimized for the multimedia source and to exploiting the inherent irregularity in IRA codes for UEP. Using the end-to-end distortion due to the first error bit in channel decoding as the cost function, which is readily given by the operational distortion-rate function of embedded source codes, we incorporate this cost function into the channel code design process via density evolution and obtain IRA codes that minimize the average cost function instead of the usual probability of error. Because the resulting IRA codes have inherent UEP capabilities due to irregularity, the new IRA code design effectively integrates channel code optimization and UEP rate assignments, resulting in source-optimized channel coding or joint source-channel coding. We simulate our source-optimized IRA codes for transporting SPIHT-coded images over a binary symmetric channel with crossover probability p. When p = 0.03 and the channel code length is long (e.g., with one codeword for the whole 512 x 512 image), we are able to operate at only 9.38% away from the channel capacity with code length 132380 bits, achieving the best published results in terms of average peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR). Compared to conventional IRA code design (that minimizes the probability of error) with the same code rate, the performance gain in average PSNR from using our proposed source-optimized IRA code design is 0.8759 dB when p = 0.1 and the code length is 12800 bits. As predicted by Shannon's separation principle, we observe that this performance gain diminishes as the code length increases.

This paper revisits the problem of source-channel coding for error-resilient video streaming, using redundant encoding. We propose a new method to jointly optimize the macroblock (MB) mode in both the primary and the secondary, redundant encoding. Encoding decisions are based on end-to-end distortion using the ROPE estimate, and are adaptive at the MB level. Further, we present a reduced complexity approach to redundant encoding. The proposed methods are general in nature, and could be implemented on top of any (hybrid) video codec. An example implementation employs the redundant slice mechanism of H.264 (JM 13.2). Simulation results show significant performance gains over conventional methods such as fixed redundant encoding schemes or non-redundant optimal MB mode selection.

In this paper we advocate a multi-resolution mechanism for redundant information generation and transmission with low overheads in bit-rate, in order to enable reliable video communication over challenging lossy networks with low latency. Our previous work entitled RECAP, transmitted a low resolution redundant version of a parent video stream, in order to achieve effective concealment of isolated and burst losses by clever multi-frame super-resolution processing at the decoder. A reference picture selection mechanism was used to transmit the low-resolution redundant video with high guarantee and stop drift in case of losses. In this work, we extend the framework to incorporate an additional distributed Wyner-Ziv coding layer on the low-resolution information to further correct errors, and consequently improve the error-concealed picture quality. The error-concealed super-resolved frame using the low-resolution information alone, now acts as side-information at the decoder to correct additional errors by decoding the Wyner-Ziv layer. Preliminary results are presented to demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed approach.

Many practical coding scenarios deal with sources with transform coefficients that are well modeled as Laplacians. For the Wyner-Ziv coding problem for such sources when correlated side-information is available at the decoder, the side-information is modeled as obtained by independent additive Laplacian or Gaussian innovation on the source. This paper deals with the optimal choice of encoding parameters for practical Wyner-Ziv coding in such scenarios, using the same quantizer family as in the regular codec to cover a range of rate-distortion trade-offs, given the variances of the source and innovation. Using our prior analysis of a general encoding model based on multi-level coset codes combining source and channel coding, we present comprehensive tables with optimal encoding parameters. These tables can be readily incorporated into a practical codec to read off the encoding parameters.

In this paper, we present error-resilient Internet video transmission using path diversity and rate-distortion optimized reference picture selection. Under this scheme, the optimal packet dependency is determined adapting to network characteristics and video content, to achieve a better trade-off between coding efficiency and forming independent streams to increase error-resilience. The optimization is achieved within a rate-distortion framework, so that the expected end-to-end distortion is minimized under the given rate constraint. The expected distortion is calculated based on an accurate binary tree modeling with the effects of channel loss and error concealment taken into account. With the aid of active probing, packets are sent across multiple available paths according to a transmission policy which takes advantage of path diversity and seeks to minimize the loss rate. Experiments demonstrate that the proposed scheme provides significant diversity gain, as well as gains over video redundancy coding and the NACK mode of conventional reference picture selection.

In this paper, we consider the source-channel rate allocation for different transmission schemes. We propose a new trellis structure and a new algorithm that are able to deal with both variable length packet and fixed length packet problems. The trellis description allows to handle any kind of transmission schemes and can therefore be applied to Bit Interleaved Coded Modulations (BICM), parallel channels or Hybrid-Automatic Repeat reQuest (HARQ).

Consider a user equipment in a Cell-Free massive Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (CF-mMIMO) system that is served by several Radio Access Points (RAPs). In the uplink of this setup, these RAPs receive noisy observations of the user/source signal and must locally compress their signals before forwarding them to the Central Processing Unit (CPU) through multiple ratelimited fronthaul channels. To retrieve the source signal at CPU, we are interested in maximizing the Mutual Information (MI) between the received signals at CPU and the user/source signal, and purposefully choose the Information Bottleneck (IB)-based compression techniques to design the quantizers at RAPs. We consider both separate and joint designs of the local compressors by establishing basic trade-offs between the informativity and compactness of the outcomes. For the joint design, two different schemes are presented, based on whether to leverage the sideinformation at CPU. Finally, the effectiveness of both compression schemes will be shown as well by means of numerical investigations over typical digital data transmission scenarios.

In this paper, we propose a joint source-channel coding scheme for progressive image transmission over binary symmetric channels(BSCs). The algorithm of set partitioning in hierarchical trees (SPIHT) is used for source coding. Rate-compatible punctured Turbo codes (RCPT) concatenated with multiple cyclic redundancy check (CRC) codes are adopted for channel protection. For a fixed transmission rate, the source and channel code rates are jointly optimized to maximize the expected image quality at the receiver. Two technical components which are different from existing methods are presented. First, a long data packet is divided into multiple CRC blocks before being coded by turbo codes. This is to secure a high coding gain of Turbo codes which is proportional to the interleaver size. In the mean time, the beginning blocks in a packet may still be useable although the decoding of the entire packet fails. Second, instead of using exhaustive search, we give a genetic algorithm (GA) based optimization method to find the appropriate channel code rates with low complexity. The effectiveness of the scheme is demonstrated through simulatons.

In this paper, a joint source-channel coding scheme is proposed for progressive image transmission over channels with both random bit errors and packet loss by using rate-compatible punctured Turbo codes (RCPT) protection only. Two technical components which are different from existing methods are presented. First, a data frame is divided into multiple CRC blocks before being coded by a turbo code. This is to secure a high turbo coding gain which is proportional to the data frame size. In the mean time, the beginning blocks in a frame may still be usable although the decoding of the entire frame fails. Second, instead of employing product codes, we only use RCPT, along with an interleaver, to protect images over channels with combined distortion including random errors and packet loss. With this setting, the effect of packet loss is equivalent to randomly puncturing turbo codes. As a result, the optimal allocation of channel code rates is required for the random errors only, which largely reduces the complexity of the optimization process. The effectiveness of the proposed schemes is demonstrated with extensive simulation results.

Image Self-Embedding is a method of embedding two sets of data into the original image, authentication data for tamper detection and reference data for image recovery. In this paper, a scalable self-embedding method is proposed based on dual-rate source-channel coding for reference data generation. The proposed method uses Set Partitioning in Hierarchical Tree (SPIHT) algorithm for source coding and Low-Density Parity Check (LDPC) for channel coding. Accordingly, the proposed recovery system provides higher reconstruction quality at low tampering rates, while it can handle higher tampering rates with less reconstruction quality. Therefore, the proposed method has the ability of both preserving the image quality and recovering higher tampering rates. Simulation results show noticeable improvements compared with the related self-embedding methods in the literature.
