The transmission of multimedia data over wireless channels poses a great deal of significant constraints on the communication system bandwidth, BER and latency. To deal with these restrictions on wireless multimedia communication, numerous kinds of compression, modulation, and coding schemes have been designed. The combination of OFDM and space-time block coding (STBC) with adaptive beam-forming is considered as an effective means to improve the performance and capacity of wireless multimedia systems. In this paper, we propose a wireless multimedia framework based on STBC-OFDM to investigate the system characteristics in the application of wirless multimedia transmission. To determine the effectiveness of the scheme over other methods, the framework is configured and simulated for three case. Comparison results show that the performance improvement as a result of STBC-OFDM with adaptive beamforming both in BER performance and subsequently image quality is achieved.

In this paper, a class of quasi-orthogonal space-time block codes (Q-STBC) is proposed for systems with 2 antennas and 3 time slots, where the orthogonal Alamouti code can not be applied due to the odd, also known as Orphan, symbol problem inherited in the 3GPP frame structure. The proposed codes can achieve rate one and full diversity with lower complexity maximum likelihood detection. The design also takes into consideration other issues, such as the power fluctuation, the compatibility with single antenna transmission mode, the receiver and transmitter complexity etc.

A pair of secondary (cognitive, unlicensed) users is communicating in the presence of multiple primary (licensed) user pairs. The cognitive transceiver is implementing beamforming and orthogonal space-time block coding in the presence of external interference, induced by the primary system transmission, that has to be properly handled. Moreover, the cognitive link nodes, both the transmitter and the receiver, are supplied with different levels of network side information (NSI), i.e. primary messages and partial channel side information (CSI). We investigate how this side information can be taken into account in the cognitive system design and how interference affects the behaviour of the beamforming solution. Through numerical simulations, we illustrate the impact of partial CSI on system performance and discuss its implications on the feasibility of cognitive systems.

In multi-hop cooperative communications, multiple relay stations are used at each hop in order to enhance transmission performance. Transceivers for multi-hop cooperative communications using space-time block code are developed in order to evaluate the transmission performance in real propagation channels. In the present paper, an experiment involving multi-hop cooperative networks is conducted with this equipment. The transceivers are implemented on field programmable gate arrays, which perform real-time signal processing. Synchronization of timing and carrier frequency among wireless stations is established based on the received signals. The transmission performance of cooperative communications is compared to the performance of non-cooperative multi-hop communications using one relay station. The performances of the relay schemes are measured quasi-simultaneously. The performance is evaluated in terms of the cumulative distribution function (CDF) of the bit error ratio.

A new incremental-relaying cooperativediversity technique with a simple dual transmit diversity and amplify-and-forward scheme is presented. Closed-form expressions for the the bit error rate and the signal to noise ratio outage probability are derived using binary phase shift keying modulation scheme over independent non-identical Rayleigh fading channels. The results show that the simple space time block coding scheme with the incremental-relaying cooperative diversity outperforms the regular incremental cooperative diversity when the same transmit power is used.

Channel estimation is a key issue in time Domain Synchronous-Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (TDS-OFDM) system, which is usually based on pseudorandom noise (PN) sequences time domain correlation. However, in space time block coding (STBC)-based TDS-OFDM MIMO system, PN sequences received in each receiver antenna are the overlaps of multiple transmitters' linear convolution of PN sequences with corresponding channel responses. Thus, channel state information (CSI) can not be estimated accurately only by means of PN sequences time domain correlation. In this paper we propose a joint time-frequency domain channel estimation scheme for STBC-based TDS-OFDM MIMO system with 2 transmitter antennas and 2 receiver antennas. To aid the channel estimation, every two signal frames in a super frame are grouped into a signal frame group at the transmitter side. For the first frame of each signal frame group, 315 Transmission Parameters Signaling (TPS) symbols are inserted equally with 12 OFDM sub-carries intervals in both transmitter branches. While for the second frame, TPS symbols are inserted equally only in the first transmitter branch, and in the second transmitter branch zero symbols are inserted in the corresponding positions. By exploiting such an elaborate TPS inserting rule and PN sequence time domain correlation, our proposed scheme can estimate CSI easily in both time domain and frequency domain. Simulation results show that our scheme can estimate the CSI accurately: the mean absolute error between the estimated values and the original values is less than 0.01 under slow-fading channel when the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is 8 dB.

In the recent years, Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) systems have emerged as a promising technology that offers reliability and spectral efficiency. Since then a great concern was devoted to enhance the performance of MIMO systems through efficient encoding and decoding techniques. Two famous MIMO approaches have emerged;Spatial Multiplexing (SM), and space time block coding (STBC). On one hand, SM offers high data rates. On the other hand, STBC presents transmission fidelity. This actually imposed a fundamental tradeoff between capacity and reliability. For a more efficient utilization of the MIMO resources, a combination between SM and STBC grasps both spectral efficiency and reliability. Hybrid SM/STBC was introduced as a MIMO system technology that offers the advantages of the two systems simultaneously. In this paper, an adaptive MIMO system that incrementally switches from multiplexing towards diversity or hybrid diversity/multiplexing is proposed. The system is initialized with a pure multiplexing mode. An error detection check is performed at the receiver side and successful detection is fed back to the transmitter via an acknowledgement. A negative acknowledgement due to false detection triggers the transmitter to incrementally switch towards the diversity mode where it sends a part of the redundancy symbols constituting an STBC or a hybrid SM/STBC - diversity mode. The incremental diversity symbols are transmitted until a positive acknowledgment is received or the transmitter exhausts its full diversity capabilities. Results indicate that, the proposed scheme combines the transmission reliability offered by MIMO diversity, while maintaining a gradual increase in the spectral efficiency in correspondence to the increase in the SNR.

We consider a multi-carrier cooperative underwater acoustic communication (UWAC) system and investigate the Doppler scaling problem arising due to the motion of different nodes. Specifically, we assume an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system with amplify and forward (AF) relaying. Our channel model is built on large-scale path loss along with the short-term frequency-selective fading. For Doppler scaling compensation, we use multi-resampling (MR) receiver designs both at the relay and destination nodes. We present an extensive Monte Carlo simulation study to evaluate the error rate performance of the proposed UWAC system. In simulations, we use the publicly available VirTEX software in conjunction with the ray-tracing based BELLHOP software to precisely reflect the characteristics of an underwater geographical location and the movement of the nodes.

Visible light communication is a new frontier of communication allowing high data-rate Internet access specially in indoor environment. One of the key challenges is the limited modulation bandwidth of sources, that is typically around several MHz. As a room or coverage space would typically be illuminated by an array of Light Emitting Diode devices, there exists the potential for parallel data transmission. In this paper we investigate the use of multiple LEDs to perform a space-time block coding. By exploiting optical MIMO techniques, jointly with Pulse Position Modulation, we can achieve data rates of the order of hundreds of Mb/s (i.e., around 600 Mb/s) in indoor VLC systems, with no reduction of link reliability. Finally, the proposed approach has been compared to similar techniques, highlighting its effectiveness and robustness.

The problem of designing good space-time block Codes (STBCs) with low maximum-likelihood (ML) decoding complexity has gathered much attention in the literature. All the known low ML decoding complexity techniques utilize the same approach of exploiting either the multigroup decodable or the fast-decodable (conditionally multigroup decodable) structure of a code. We refer to this well known technique of decoding STBCs as Conditional ML (CML) decoding. In [1], we introduced a framework to construct ML decoders for STBCs based on the Generalized Distributive Law (GDL) and the Factor-graph based Sum-Product Algorithm, and showed that for two specific families of STBCs, the Toepltiz codes and the Overlapped Alamouti Codes (OACs), the GDL based ML decoders have strictly less complexity than the CML decoders. In this paper, we introduce a 'traceback' step to the GDL decoding algorithm of STBCs, which enables roughly 4 times reduction in the complexity of the GDL decoders proposed in [1]. Utilizing this complexity reduction from 'traceback', we then show that for any STBC (not just the Toeplitz and Overlapped Alamouti Codes), the GDL decoding complexity is strictly less than the CML decoding complexity. For instance, for any STBC obtained from Cyclic Division Algebras that is not multigroup or conditionally multigroup decodable, the GDL decoder provides approximately 12 times reduction in complexity compared to the CML decoder. Similarly, for the Golden code, which is conditionally multigroup decodable, the GDL decoder is only about half as complex as the CML decoder.
