We present an alternate view of transmit diversity for the Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) system with collocated antennas in terms of certain subspaces determined by the signal set used. For a MIMO system with n(t) antennas at the transmitter, with spatial multiplexing, deep fades are shown to occur when all the rows of the channel fade coefficient matrix fall in a finite number of n(t) - 1 dimensional vector subspaces of C-nt referred as the singular fade subspaces, which depend on the signal set used. It is the presence of these harmful singular fade subspaces which results in a transmit diversity order 1 for a MIMO system with spatial multiplexing. For a space time block Code (STBC), the singular fade subspaces depend on the design matrix of the STBC as well as the signal set used. Full transmit diversity STBCs ensure a transmit diversity order of n(t) for a signal set, by totally removing all the n(t) - 1 dimensional singular fade subspaces which were present for the MIMO spatial multiplexing system. In general, for an STBC over a signal set, if there exists a singular fade subspace of dimension d, where 0 <= d < n(t), there would exist a pair-wise error event whose transmit diversity order is n(t) - d. The notion of singular fade subspaces is extremely helpful for the design of network coding schemes in a wireless two-way relaying scenario, in which two end nodes exchange bi-directional information with the help of a relay.

Cooperative Multi-In Multi-Out (MIMO) schemes can reduce both transmission energy and latency in distributed wireless sensor networks (WSNs). When circuit energy is considered in such networks, the total energy consumed as the number of cooperating nodes increases becomes of particular interest. In addition, most of the previous works focused only on space-time-block-Code (STBC) schemes and ignore other MIMO schemes. In this paper we present a comparison study of three cooperative MIMO schemes: Beamforming (BF), STBC and Spatial Multiplexing (SM) where both the transmission and circuit energies are considered. We consider a wireless sensor network operating in quasi-static Rayleigh fading channels with M cooperating transmit nodes and N cooperating receive nodes. We show that the Single-In-Single-Out (SISO) scheme is more energy-efficient and has lower packet latency at higher regions of transmission power while the three cooperative MIMO schemes are more energy-efficient and outperform the SISO scheme at the lower regions. From our analysis, we can conclude that, Beamforming outperforms both the SM and STBC schemes in term of energy-efficiency and lower packet latency. Also we suggest that the Beamforming scheme utilising two transmit nodes results in an efficient cooperative system.

Receive diversity yields a higher signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) than transmit diversity when the total transmitted power and diversity order are the same. However, if the transmitter has complete or partial knowledge of channel, the SNR gap between these two schemes can be reduced. This paper introduces an adaptive power allocation scheme for space-time block coded (STBC) multiple-antenna systems to improve system performance. For any set of channel fading coefficients, the transmit power scaling factors are controlled by a single design parameter u. The proposed adaptive power allocation scheme improves the instantaneous SNR at the receiver. Special choices of U result in some existing STBC schemes. Performance gain of the proposed scheme over the conventional equal-power scheme under the condition of perfect and imperfect feedback is studied. The maximum achievable SNR gain limit over the conventional scheme is also derived.

In this paper, a class of quasi-orthogonal space-time block codes (Q-STBC) is proposed for systems with 2 antennas and 3 time slots, where the orthogonal Alamouti code can not be applied due to the "odd symbol" problem inherited in the 3GPP frame structure. The proposed codes can achieve rate one and full diversity with lower complexity maximum likelihood detection. The design takes into consideration the signal power fluctuation and minimizes the potential peak-to-average ratio (PAPR) in the transmitted signals. The application to Single Carrier Frequency Division Multiple Access (SC-FDMA) has been investigated further. A transmission scheme is proposed to preserve the good PAPR property of SC-FDMA. In addition, linear and iterative decoding algorithms are proposed to simplify the receiver complexity. Simulations have been conducted to demonstrate the superior performance.

This paper investigates the application and performance improvement of MIMO space time block coding (STBC) for Physical Layer Security. The paper analyzes a Precoder Matrix Index (PMI) based scheme called Private Random Pre-coding (PRP). Key-based Physical Layer Security protects against eavesdroppers in wireless communication links, invaluable in emerging SG and IoT networks. This paper derives improvements in PRP based on STBC. Also presented are simulation results which show as much as 7 dB improvement in Key bit Error Rate performance vs SINR of the enhanced PRP-STBC scheme for a 1-bit codebook at the cost of decreased transmission rate. In addition, the paper derives a closed form expression for the Key bit Error Rate for both the PRP and enhanced PRP-STBC schemes as a function of dense SG cellular geometries. Furthermore, we present the effective information rate of the PRP key based communication framework in low SNR scenarios.

Power line communication (PLC) is a promising technique for Internet of Things and weaponry because of its wide distribution and low cost. However, the PLC channel is frequency selectivity, time-varying and various impulse noises. In this context, this paper designed a robust 2*2 MIMO PLC system. Channel coding techniques such as cyclic redundancy check and interleaving are added to the PLC system. space time block coding is also added to improve bit-error-rate (BER) performance. Besides, digital front end is adopted to process the transmitted signals. It can increase sending frequency and add artificial noises. Simulation results show that the proposed system performs well on BER and has a good security performance.

Radar system with several transmitters and/or receiver antennas have been in increasingly focus over the years. An often desired objective with spatially diverse multiple transmitters is that the antennas should ideally emit orthogonal waveforms. This condition can be difficult to realize in practice and as an alternative space-time block coding methods can be implemented. This work investigates a multiple antenna setup where non-orthogonal noise waveforms are utilized and emit through a block coding structure at the transmitters. The receiver employs a compressed sensing approach where only a subset of incoming data is stored and processed. We demonstrate that such a system can operate well and compressed sensing techniques allow for a significant reduction in sampling amount and block duration interval.

This paper focuses on mobile multi-input multioutput (MIMO) underwater acoustic communications (UAC) over double-selective channels suffering from both inter-symbol interference and Doppler scaling effects (stretching or compression). Temporal resampling is implemented to effectively convert the Doppler scaling effects to Doppler frequency shifts. Then an extension of the sparse learning via iterative minimization (SLIM) algorithm, referred to as generalization of SLIM (GoSLIM), is used to estimate the frequency modulated acoustic channels. Because GoSLIM is user parameter free, it is easy to use in practical applications. We also consider channel equalization and symbol detection for various MIMO transmission schemes, including both space-time block coding and spatial multiplexing. The effectiveness of the proposed mobile MIMO UAC schemes is demonstrated using recently acquired in-water experimental measurements.

Orthogonal space-time block Codes (STBC) with Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) systems have become a very popular way of adding spatial diversity to transmissions. Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) is a modulation technique to further increase the robustness against frequency selective fading at high data rates. Some authors have then proposed to combine both: linear STBC codes with OFDM;however, with a major weakness: high Peak to Average Power Ratio (PAPR). Using instead Continuous Phase Modulation (CPM) to get constant envelope signals to reduce PAPR, CPM-OFDM can take advantage of a favorable trade-off between power and bandwidth efficiency given by CPM with the well-known robustness to frequency selective fading of OFDM. To further increase the data throughput, while maintaining robustness to frequency selective fading and low PAPR, we introduce here a new space-time-frequency diversity technique based on MIMO OFDM using L2-orthogonal multi-h CPM STBC codes. We benchmark these schemes under Rayleigh frequency selective channels with semi-coherent detection and show how they achieve improved spectral compactness while providing a low decoding complexity by the use of a simplified Zero-Forcing (ZF) detection/ correlation algorithm.

Construction of rate-optimal full-diversity space-time block Codes (STBC) over symmetric PSK signal sets using cyclotomic field extensions of the field of rational Q was reported in [1] and for a variety of other signal sets in [2] using non-cyclotomic field extensions. Fields are commutative division algebras. Construction of full-rate STBCs with full-diversity using a class of non-commutative division algebras (cyclic division algebras) was reported in [3] and the Alamouti code was shown to be a special case with an algebraic uniqueness property. In this paper, we present the basic principle behind these constructions and also obtain full-diversity, full-rate STBCs using a different class of non-commutaive division algebra constructed by Brauer [6, 9]. The interrelationship between codes constructed from division algebras, linear dispersion codes and codes from orthogonal designs is discussed.
