Purpose - This paper aims to describe the real-time design and implementation of a space time trellis code decoder using Altera Complex Programmable Logic Devices (CPLD). Design/methodology/approach - The code uses a generator matrix designed for four-state space time trellis code (STTC) that uses quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) modulation scheme. The decoding process has been carried out using maximum likelihood sequences estimation through the Viterbi algorithm. Findings - The results showed that the STTC decoder can successfully decipher the encoded symbols from the STTC encoder and can fully recover the original data. The data rate of the decoder is 50 Mbps. Originality/value - It has been shown that 96 per cent improvement of the total logic elements in Max V CPLD is used compared to the previous literature review.

A Simple Analytical Design Approach to space time trellis codes

The space time trellis code (STTC) is a combined design of error-control coding, modulation and transmit-receive diversity that improves data rate and error performance in a wireless channel without any loss in spectral efficiency. It can either be described by a graphical representation, or, in terms of closed analytical forms that lead to a more tractable generator matrix description. However, the main difficulty in generating best code is the long search duration which makes both trellis implementation and generator matrix description difficult, thereby, limiting the use of STTC in wireless links. Since an exhaustive search over all the matrix entries turns out to be impractical if the number of transmitter, encoder states and/or constellation size is very high, some literature provide techniques to reduce the search complexity. Some of them are sub-optimal, some are good. However, none reports any straightforward rule of thumb to design the generator matrix. In this paper, we propose two very simple rules to construct the generator matrix for designing STTC with any arbitrary number of transmit antennas and any memory-less constellation. Mathematical justification behind the rules has been presented. It has been shown that the simplicity of proposed rules reduces the code search complexity to a large extent along with a similar or better coding gain compared to those presented in previous literature. In addition, the STTCs obtained from proposed rules perform no worse than the codes given in previous literature in terms of error rate.

Adaptively Grouped Multilevel space-time trellis codes

Grouped multilevel space-time trellis codes (GMLSTTCs) utilize multilevel coding (MLC), antenna grouping and space time trellis codes (STTCs) for simultaneously providing coding gain, diversity improvement and increased spectral efficiency. The performance of GMLSTTCs is limited due to predefining of the antenna groups. It has been shown that when perfect or partial channel state information is available at the transmitter, the performance and capacity of space-time coded system can be further improved. In this paper, we present a new code designed by combining MLC, STTCs, antenna grouping and channel state information at transmitter, henceforth referred to as adaptively grouped multilevel space time trellis codes (AGMLSTTCs). AGMLSTTCs use a single full-diversity STTC at initial some levels and multiple STTCs at some later levels. The single full diversity STTC at each initial level spans all transmit antennas and the STTC at each later level spans a group of transmit antennas. The channel state information at the transmitter is used to adaptively group the transmit antennas for the later levels. Instantaneous channel power gain is calculated between each transmit antenna and all the receive antennas. A subset of transmit antennas having maximum channel power gain is selected to form a group. The simulation results show that AGMLSTTCs enable to transmit more than one data symbol per time slot with improved error performance over GMLSTTCs with predefined transmit antenna grouping.

Performance Analysis of Adaptively Grouped Multilevel space-time trellis coded Systems using Different Component codes

Adaptively grouped multilevel space-time trellis codes (AGMLSTTCs) utilize multilevel coding (MLC), space time trellis codes (STTCs) and adaptive transmit antenna grouping for simultaneously providing coding gain, diversity improvement and increased spectral efficiency. AGMLSTTCs use Chen, Yuan, and Vucetic (CYV) STTCs as component codes in MLC. In this paper, we present performance comparison of AGMLSTTCs generated using different component STTCs. We use Tarokh, Seshadri, and Calderbank (TSC), Baro, Bauch and Hansmann (BBH) and CYV codes as component STTCs. The simulation results show that AGMLSTTCs with CYV as component STTCs outperforms in comparison with the AGMLSTTCs with TSC and BBH as component STTCs.

MIMO System Optimization Using STTC Based STBC with Channel Estimation

We propose a new architecture involving space time trellis code (STTC) concatenated with space time block code (STBC) using modified sphere decoder (MSD-1) at the receiver for improving system performance in the multi-antenna environment. With the aim of increasing the 'Diversity Order' of signal set, rotated versions of quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) constellation have been used in multidimensional space and the associated design parameters required to search an effective signal constellation have been optimized. The limitations on account of complexity owing to multiple copies of data being received after experiencing various channel effects in the multi input multi output (MIMO) systems have been looked into. Accordingly, MSD-1 algorithm has been proposed with lower complexity, which in turn would give rise to a system with high spectral efficiency. The system gains have been verified with channel state information (CSI) errors.

This paper introduces new studies on the codes named Super Orthogonal space time trellis codes (SOSTTC). Using set partitioning rules combined with a set of orthogonal designs, SOSTTC's are able to combine the coding gain of STTC's together with diversity advantage of orthogonal STBC's. We propose new application fields of these codes in the particular context of three transmit antenna systems. We introduce new STTC's built on STBC designs that outperform some STTC's schemes based on the determinant and rank criteria. Furthermore, we demonstrate by simulation that the use of these codes in a turbo parallel concatenated scheme permits working very close to the channel outage probability.

space-time trellis codes (STTCs) generally provide coding and diversity gains, but only transmit one data symbol per time slot. Using higher order modulations incurs high decoding complexity and lengthy code searches. Multi-layer schemes using multiple STTCs over subgroups of antennas provide higher throughput, but require as many receive as transmit antennas and have reduced diversity gains. Here, we develop grouped multilevel STTCs that can provide the high throughput of multi-layered schemes while realizing larger diversity gains. Any number of receive antennas can be used. An example is shown that achieves 6 bits/sec/Hz using 16-QAM and 4 transmit antennas.

Wireless sensor network (WSN), a network of minute interconnected sensing element nodes communicating within themselves utilizing radio frequency signals and utilized in immensely enormous quantities to examine and realize the physical world. The communicating sensing element nodes are power-driven by batteries, which have a circumscribed lifetime. Hence managing the energy is a primary requisite for the design of WSN. In this paper, an efficient wireless sensor network utilizing a cooperative Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) predicated on space time trellis code (STTC) is proposed. This STTC based cooperative MIMO technique is incorporated into Exclusive OR - Low Energy Adaptive Clustering Hierarchy (XOR-LEACH) protocol. For selection of cluster head, the last cluster head and a arbitrary binary vector are XORed together. The proposed system obtains amended peUrformance and is compared with the existing LEACH protocol in terms of network lifespan and residual energy. This system performance in terms of Bit Error Rate (BER) has been analyzed for various detection techniques.

In this paper a joint source and space time decoding scheme is proposed for the high speed digital source transmission over fading channels. At the transmitter Reverse Variable Length code (RVLC) is concatenated with recursive space time trellis code (recursive STTC). At the receiver iterative joint VLC and space time decoding algorithm is proposed to fully utilize the residual redundance introduced in RVLC and the coding gain of recursive space time trellis code. Simulation result shows that the proposed joint decoding system achieves a better decoding performance over fading channels than separable decoding system.

With the integration of internet and multimedia applications in next generation wireless communication, the demand for wide-band high data rate communication services is increasing. Since the available spectrum is limited and user demand continues to grow, this problem could be solved by WiMAX (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access) technology. WiMAX supports high data rate and high capacity in mobile BWA (Broadband Wireless Access). The performance of WiMAX system can be enhanced by incorporating better channel coding technique in the system. It can be further improved by incorporating MIMO (Multiple-Inputs Multiple-Outputs) technique. The introduction of MIMO with STC (space time code) provides a robust platform for space, time and frequency selective fading conditions and increases both data rate and system performance. In this paper, the performance of mobile WiMAX system using LDPC (Low Density Parity Check) coding and MIMO system considering STC techniques under Rayleigh channel is simulated and analyzed.
