In this paper, we extend space-time block coding techniques, originally proposed for point-to-point communication links, to point-to-multipoint communication links, thereby taking into account the multiple access technique in the design of the transmission scheme. In specific, we propose two per-tone linear space-time chip equalizers for a space-time coded MC-DS-CDMA down-link with linear precoding. Both the training-based and the semi-blind chip equalizer exploit the presence of a continuous code-multiplexed pilot in the transmitted signal but differ in the amount of a-priori information they assume to estimate their coefficients. With M-t transmit antennas at the base-station, M-r receive antennas at the mobile station and L the order of the multipath channel, they come close to extracting the full diversity of order M-t (.) M-r (.) (L + 1) in reduced as well as full load settings.

In this paper, we propose a space-time block coded (STBC) amplify-and-forward cooperative (STBC-Co-AF) relay which requires no knowledge of CSI at relay station (RS). In STBC-Co-AF relay, the source node transmits 2-block signal to both RS and the destination node in the first time slot and then, RS transmits amplified STBC-coded signal to the destination node in the second time slot. The destination node performs a series of frequency-domain equalization (FDE), diversity combining, and STBC decoding by viewing the concatenation of the channels between the source node-RS link and between the RS-destination node link as an equivalent channel. We evaluate, by computer simulation, the average bit error rate (BER) performance when using STBC-Co-AF relay and show that the STBC-Co-AF relay can achieves the BER performance superior to Co-AF relay.

Although multi-user MIMO multiplexing is known as a powerful means to increase the sum throughput, MIMO diversity still remains as an important means to improve the bit error rate (BER) performance in a poor channel condition. Recently, we proposed selective MIMO diversity with subcarrierwise user equipment (UE) antenna identification/selection. Selective MIMO diversity jointly uses maximal-ratio transmit diversity & frequency-domain equalization (MRTD-FDE) and minimum mean square error combining diversity & FDE (MMSECD-FDE) both at base station (BS) for OFDM downlink and SC uplink, respectively. In this paper, we compare selective MIMO diversity with two other typical MIMO diversity schemes, i.e., the space-time block-coded (STBC) diversity and the MMSE filtering combined with singular value decomposition (MMSESVD) based diversity. Pilot-aided channel estimation (PACE) is used for generating the transmit/receive diversity & equalization weights at BS and the transmit/receive diversity weights at UE. The uncoded average BER performance of selective MIMO diversity in a frequency-selective Rayleigh fading MIMO channel is evaluated by computer simulation and is compared with those of STBC-TD and MMSE-SVD diversity.

In this paper we propose a cooperative protocol for cognitive wireless networks that can improve the overall system spectral efficiency when a secondary user (SU) incorrectly transmits over the same resource with the primary user (PU). The interfering transmissions are received at relay nodes, that form the cooperative network, and are decoded with successive interference cancellation (SIC). Depending on the decoding results, each relay applies independently a space-time code (STC) to the result and then the relays forward the coded signals simultaneously. The advantages of the protocol are first that it operates passively without the need for source cooperation, and second that it does not adopt a different mode of cooperation for different average channel conditions. Comparative simulations with a state-of-the-art multi-source transmission protocol reveal that our protocol can minimize the impact of incorrectly detecting a PU transmission from the perspective of the overall system spectral efficiency.

Antenna arrays can be used in wireless communication systems to improve system performance. Both beamforming (BF) and transmit diversity (TD) which exploit antenna arrays are promising techniques for increasing channel capacity. In this paper, two downlink transmission methods combining beamforming with transmit diversity in the closed-loop mode are proposed, and according to the actual channel states the transmitter can adaptively change the transmission mode between the two methods. Both the methods combine BF, space-time block coding (STBC) and selection transmit diversity (STD), but the first one uses diversity arrays while the second one uses beamforming arrays for downlink transmission. The complexities of the two methods about the antenna configuration and the information feedback are compared, and their improved performances over original STBC scheme are investigated in detail by the simulation.

In this article a Multiple Input Single Output (MISO) hardware design is reported, comprising both a transmitter and a receiver for space-time coded signals. The transmitter implements Alamouti space-time coding, while the receiver uses maximum likelihood estimation to decode the space-time codes. As a result, the hardware communication system is configured as a 2x1 MISO link. The hardware is designed modularly, in order for the system to be easily extendible for the connection of multiple antennas. A digital core allows high-speed data generation in the signal generator units, forwarding analog I and Q signals to the radio-frequency modules connected to it. The Bit Error Rate (BER) performance of the Alamouti diversity scheme is compared to the performance of Single Input Single Output (SISO) and Maximum Ratio Combining (MRC) systems. This comparison is based on simulation results, providing a good approximation of the theoretical BER performance, and a series of hardware measurements to empirically support this theoretical performance.

In this paper, we analytically evaluate the bit error rate (BER) performance of space-time coded orthogonal frequency division multiplex (OFDM) transmit diversity over correlated Nakagami-m fading channel. Coherent and incoherent detection of binary frequency shift-keying (FSK) and phase-shift keying (PSK) signals are considered. Numerical results of the BER corresponding to different fading parameters and correlation coefficients are demonstrated.

In this paper we propose a cooperative protocol and a symbol decoding algorithm that target improved performance in the presence of inter-cell interference (ICI) in wireless cellular networks. Our scheme uses the wireless signals that interfere at relay nodes located at the cell edge instead of discarding them. The relays are non-regenerative and apply a space-time code (STC) to the interfered signal. Subsequently, the relays broadcast the coded signals. At the destinations the interfered and ST-coded signals are decoded in two stages. First by decoding the STC, and then by applying successive interference cancellation (SIC). Simulation results for Rayleigh fading channel reveal significant throughput benefits even in the low SNR regime. We also present results for a small-scale LTE-based cellular scenario and we compare our scheme against the Coordinated MultiPoint (CoMP) transmission mode of LTE-A that is based on beamforming.

Military communication relies on robust and secure physical links that adhere to regulatory protocols and standards for communication. In unfamiliar terrain or hostile conditions these physical links can undergo deep-fading or intentional signal jamming, deteriorating the ongoing communication. Traditional retransmission technology or power adaptation would not be applicable to correct the outages seen in such scenarios, and often relays have been sought out as the solution. However given the exigency related to in-battle military communications, the latency with relaying cannot be tolerated and designing a scheme that is time-efficient is crucial. To this end, we discuss a practical approach to establishing bi-directional communication via a support node that acts a partial relay to the stranded military units, while maintaining its ongoing communication. This is possible through the use of a broadcast spatial multiplexing protocol implemented through space-time block coding at the relay. Our simulation results show us improved BER (bit-error rate) performance than the perfect direct link for high-SNR (signal-to-noise ratio) regimes, and comparable performance across the spectrum. We also demonstrate that our scheme is impervious to power asynchronicities between the stranded military nodes.

Outdoor channels can be modelled as as a sum of array response vectors of varying gain at different Angles of Departure (AoDs) from different point sources. Based on this characteristics, we derive a hybrid of Beam-Forming (BF) and space-time block coding (STBC), where the space-time code is transmitted over the beams generated by array response vectors. This is for the practical case where the transmit array may have adequate information on the departure angles of the dominant paths between transmitter and receiver. In the case where the transmitter has knowledge on the associated complex path gains, a power loading scheme is designed when We compute analytically the Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) of the proposed hybrid for the specific case of a two-path channel model and using the orthogonal Alamouti code, and compare the result to the SNR of optimal Linear Precoding (LP) and the theoretically possible SNR of Orthogonal STBC (OSTBC). Simulation results show that the performance of the BF/STBC hybrid with and without power loading can be very close to LP-under certain conditions-or even better in the practical case where there are phase estimation errors in the path gain estimates employed at the transmitter.
