In order to guarantee the Quality of Service (QoS) for different users in wireless broadband networks, advanced techniques such as space-time (ST) processing and Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) are implemented at the physical layer. However, the employment of such techniques evidently affects the resource allocation algorithms at the Medium Access Control (MAC) layer. In this paper, we propose a cross-layer scheme of resource allocation algorithms based on space-time OFDM-CDMA systems for data transmissions. We mainly focus on QoS requirements of the proportional bandwidth fairness and best-effort throughput. Also, we derive the optimal tradeoff between the fairness and throughput. Our extensive simulations show that the proposed infrastructure and algorithms can improve the bandwidth fairness and system throughput significantly over wireless networks.

We consider the design of iterative multiuser detectors based on the Expectation-Maximization (EM) algorithm and Parallel Interference Cancellation (PIC) for space-time block coded (STBC) WCDMA employing 16-QAM in multipath fading channels. We show that the EM-based and PIC receivers improve the receiver performance particularly when two receive antennas are employed. We see that EM receiver shows better performace than PIC. In fact, the PIC is a special case of our proposed EM-based detector.

In this paper we consider a multi relay Decode and Forward (OF) relay network assisted by Hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ) in a Rayleigh block fading environment. The system uses an incremental relaying strategy in which the best relay is selected to cooperate with source. A space-time block coding (STB) is used for cooperation between source and selected relay to transmit the data to the destination. Relays and destination use maximum ratio combining (MRC) technique to decode the sent message using previously received versions. We derive a closed-form expression of asymptotic outage probability at high Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) regime. We also derive the average delay and throughput in a delay constrained application. The derivation method is based on the Laplace transform, which proves to be a very effective analytical tool when combined with the properties of the special functions. In addition, we investigate the optimum power allocation strategy to minimize the outage probability and consequently maximize the average throughput perceived by the end user. The simulation results show that the obtained analytical bound for the outage probability is very tight at high SNR regime. In addition the proposed power allocation scheme clearly outperforms the equal power allocation.

In this paper, we present a practical simple location-aided umbrella-shaped beamforming scheme with transmit diversity of massive Multiple-input Multiple-output (MIMO) system for high speed railway scenarios. Unlike conventional schemes which combines space-time block coding (STBC) with adaptive beamforming or orthogonal switched beamforming, our scheme needs neither uplink channel covariance matrix (UCCM) nor downlink CCM (DCCM) but precalculates the beamforming weights with the help of train location information, which can be completed through pure off-line calculation and therefore reduce system implementation complexity. A closed-form solution of power allocation optimization is derived and the performance of our scheme is verified with simulations from the perspectives of instantaneous received signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), bit error rate (BER) and handover success probability. It indicates that the performance of our scheme approaches to the combination scheme of STBC and adaptive beamforming (STBC-ABF) without introducing any on-line system complexities.

Spatial modulation (SM) is a promising technique for improving spectral efficiency for both radio frequency (RE) and optical wireless communication (OWC) systems. space-time block coding (STBC) scheme is another important technique to enhance the system performance of RE and OWC. Recently, STBC and SM techniques are combined for RF systems to take advantages of both systems while avoiding their drawbacks. In this paper, we propose space-time block coded spatial modulation (STBC-SM) for free space optical communication (FSO). We derived the analytical bit-error rate (BER) expression of the proposed system for log-normal and gamma-gamma atmospheric turbulence channels where the pulse amplitude modulation (PAM) is considered for Intensity Modulation (IM) with Direct Detection (1)1)). We confirm the accuracy of our analytical expression through computer simulations. Additionally, we compare our proposed optical STBC-SM scheme with the optical SM scheme in terms of BER performance.

Multiple-antenna systems that operate at high rates' require simple yet effective space-time transmission schemes Linear dispersion (LD) codes transmits substreams of data in linear combinations over space and time The traditionally LD codes are mainly designed to optimize the mutual information which cannot guarantee good error performance In contrast, using the simulation-based optimization method can minimize the block error rate (BLER), but failed to optimize the channel capacity to the fullest extent In this paper, a new design algorithm will be presented which would achieve both lower BLER and higher capacity by adding some extra qualifications in the simulation process Simulation results show that the proposed method has a better performance over a large range of SNRs than the earlier proposed methods

In this paper we propose a linear decoupling scheme for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) antenna systems where spatial diversity is exploited through complex orthogonal (COD) or quasi-orthogonal (CQOD) designs. The proposed scheme is based on rewriting the space-time block code (STBC) in an alternative form via generalized permutation matrices (GPM) and transforming the original system to an equivalent one, where all the transmitted symbols are decoupled, allowing thus a single symbol or symbol pair-wise maximum likelihood decoding (MLD) through a closed form expression (CFE).

Wireless communication systems must be designed to mitigate fading to guarantee a reliable communication. In future technologies, a successful method to improve reliable commun -ication over a wireless link is to use multiple antennas. Recently, a lot of effort has been put into designing closed-loop STBCs schemes with a full rate, full diversity and some array gain for four transmit antennas with one or two bit feed back in the case of two complex symbols transmission, respectively. In this paper, we propose a new enhancement of diversity using joint space-time block Codes for four transmit antennas with one bit feedback. We show that the proposed scheme can achieve a full diversity, full rate and some array gain with simple linear decoding, and it has the same performance compare to EO-STBCs for four transmit antennas with two complex transmit symbols.

In this paper, we consider a multi-relay cooperative network assisted by the Automatic Repeat reQuest mechanism. In particular, the source node broadcasts the encoded stream to a set of relaying nodes and a relay will be chosen at each retransmission round to assist the source to convey the same stream to the common destination. Afterwards, we develop a semi-analytical method to compute the exact end-to-end outage probability, average delay and throughput metrics for the general case where the relays are positioned at various locations. This analytical method is corroborated by extensive simulation results to prove the accuracy of the proposed formulation. Further, we assess the performance of several relay-placement and power allocation configurations to find the optimal scheme.

In this paper, we study a practical design for hybrid space-time block coding (STBC) and spatial multiplexing (SM) with orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems. The hybrid STBC-SM OFDM systems can achieve both spatial diversity and multiplexing gains simultaneously in frequency selective MIMO channels. For the hybrid designs, zero forcing (ZF) and minimum mean square error (MMSE) linear receivers are derived by a simple transformation. To improve error rate performance, we propose weighted soft decision Viterbi decoding by using the SINR of the transformed equivalent channel matrix. The proposed scheme can mitigate noise enhancement inherent to ZF and MMSE linear detectors. Extensive simulations show that the proposed technique with low complexity exhibit robust performance improvement for different propagation channels and modulations.
