A Reliable Group-Simulcasting Scheme for Distributed Antenna Systems

Simulcasting involves transmitting the same signal simultaneously over several antennas on the same carrier frequency. We derive the optimal grouping condition for simulcasting over a massively distributed antenna system (DAS) employing orthogonal space-time block coding (STBC), where the order of the STBC coding matrix n(o) is smaller than the number of remote antenna units (RAUs). While the optimum grouping minimizes the average bit error rate (BER) in the coverage area, we further propose two heuristic grouping rules and derive the corresponding stream-balanced grouping schemes in three DAS topologies, namely, linear, hexagonal and square lattice, to achieve low average BER across the area covered by the DAS. Simulation results for the different topologies confirm the superiority of the proposed grouping schemes compared with the other grouping methods. Also, when either n(o) or the RAU density increases, the average BER decreases.

Performance Analysis of STBC-Based MIMO PLC System in Cyclostationary Noise Environment

The paper proposes a multiple-input multiple-output-based power line communication (PLC) system subject to Rayleigh fading and corrupted by additive cyclostationary Gaussian noise. The proposed coherent receiver structure employs a block reception rule at the reception unit for detecting the space-time block-coded transmitted data symbols. A closed-form expression for the pairwise error probability (PEP) is derived using a characteristic function approach. Exact and asymptotic expressions for the average PEP are obtained for the special case of Alamouti code transmission which show that the PLC system under consideration offers full diversity. Numerical results depict the improvement in the system performance with increase in the number of receive diversity branches and the average signal-to-noise ratio per branch and decrease in the correlation value between the noise samples.

Distributed differential space-time coding for wireless relay networks

Distributed space-time coding is a cooperative transmission scheme for wireless relay networks. With this scheme, antennas of the distributive relays work as transmit antennas of the sender and generate a space-time code at the receiver. It achieves the maximum diversity. Although the scheme needs no channel information at relays, it does require full channel information, both the channels from the transmitter to relays and the channels from relays to the receiver, at the receiver. In this paper, we propose a differential transmission scheme, which requires channel information at neither relays nor the receiver, for wireless relay networks. As distributed space-time coding can be seen as the counterpart of space-time coding in the network setting, this scheme is the counterpart of differential space-time coding. Compared to coherent distributed space-time coding, the differential scheme is 3dB worse. In addition, we show that Alamouti, square real orthogonal, and Sp(2) codes can be used differentially in networks with corresponding numbers of relays. We also propose distributed differential space-time codes that work for networks with any number of relays using circulant matrices.

A Quasi-Orthogonal Group space-time architecture to achieve a better diversity-multiplexing tradeoff

Most existing MIMO (Multiput-Input Multiput-Output) schemes optimize only either the diversity gain or the multiplexing gain. To obtain a good tradeoff between these two, the Quasi-Orthogonal. Group space-time (QoGST) architecture is proposed, wherein the transmit stream is subgrouped but encoded via an inter-group space-time block encoder, with group interference suppression at the receiver. This paper also considers another combined space-time coiling and layered space-time architecture, which we refer to as Group Layered space-time (GLST), where space-time block coding is employed within each group. Under the assumption of Rayleigh fading and a prior perfect channel state information at the receiver, a performance analysis will demonstrate that both QoGST and GLST can achieve a good diversity-multiplexing tradeoff. QoGST is even superior to GLST. Simulation results will validate our analysis and further show that compared to the existent Layered space-time block Code (LSTBC) scheme, both QoGST and GLST can achieve a significant performance gain.

Autonomic cooperative networking for wireless green sensor systems

Both the concept of cooperative transmission and the notion of autonomicity have emerged recently as the key elements of the future networked systems. Cooperative transmission allows for extending the transmission range achievable by power-constrained devices thanks to the use of their neighbours being able to reach more distant destination nodes. Autonomicity in turn enables a networked system to behave like a living organism and self-manage without any explicit need for an external intervention. Each of these ideas is highly applicable to wireless sensor networks in terms of conserving energy and improving transmission capabilities to facilitate smooth and durable system operation.

Low complexity lattice reduction scheme for STBC two-user uplink MIMO systems

Recently, a lattice reduction-aided (LRA) multiple-input multiple-output detection scheme has been proposed in junction with linear (as well as nonlinear) detectors. It is well known that these schemes provide a full diversity, and its complexity is comparable to that of linear detectors for the block fading channels. For the fast varying channels, however, the decoding complexity of LRA detection scheme is unreasonably high. This article proposes an efficient iterative lattice reduction (LR) scheme for an uplink system with two receive antennas at the base station and two users, each employing the Alamouti space-time block code (STBC). By taking advantage of the certain inherent STBC structure of transmitted symbols from users, the proposed scheme provides the same performance as a conventional LR while saving about 80% computational complexity. We also show that it can be successfully extended to handle the scenario where another interfering user, who is also employing the Alamouti STBC, is present.

Current trends in non-geostationary orbit (NGSO) satellite communications pose the challenge of attaining high spectral efficiency with low-complexity user terminals (UTs). In this context, this letter investigates the downlink/forward transmission of linear space-time block coded (STBC) signals through multiple geographically distributed NGSO satellites. As such, by combining the signals through multiple satellites, STBC provides a diversity advantage, which helps in combating the adverse effects of fading and interference at the UT. The main challenge of implementing such a scheme is the lack of time synchronization and the interference effect through a multi-satellite system toward the UT. To address this issue, we propose a digital receiver structure with multiple branches specifically designed to lock onto each satellite of the multi-satellite system, thus providing a solution for simple UT without requiring additional complexity in terms of radio-frequency components. Herein, we consider the zero-forcing (ZF) based diversity combining scheme while deriving the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) expression at UT. Our results demonstrate the SINR improvement brought by the ZF combiner.

GRP-based interleaver for IDMA systems over frequency selective channel

An interleave-division multiple-access (IDMA) system supports the presence of multiple users in a cell by resorting to a different interleaver per user. Therefore the choice of the interleaver critically impinges on system performance. A new interleaver structure is proposed for the so-called STBC-OFDM-IDMA [space-time block coding (STBC), orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) and IDMA] architecture, combining the viable features of the STBC, the OFDM and the IDMA techniques. This interleaver is based on the new idea of adopting permutation control keys generated using two cryptography elliptic curves in which the degree of randomness of the interleaved sequence is scalable by using several rounds and a different subkey in each round. In addition to offering a certain degree of data security, it is shows through simulation results that the resulting architecture incorporating the proposed interleaver yields a viable bit error rate performance.

High Rate space-time block Coded Spatial Modulation with Cyclic Structure

A high rate space-time block coded spatial modulation scheme with cyclic structure (STBC-CSM) is presented in this letter. In the proposed STBC-CSM scheme, a pair of transmit antennas are chosen out of the total transmit antennas to send Alamouti's STBC, whose two signal symbols are drawn from two different constellations, and the antenna pairs activated in different codewords are moving cyclically along the total transmit antenna array. To exploit the diversity advantage of Alamouti's STBC, the optimization of STBC-CSM is given by maximizing its coding gain. Moreover, the proposed scheme allows for a low-complexity maximum-likelihood (ML) detector due to the orthogonality of Alamouti's STBC. The simulation results verify our theoretical analysis and demonstrate the performance advantages of our proposed STBC-CSM over the existing schemes such as STBC-SM, H-STBC-SM, CIOD-SM-H and SM.

Blind decoders for linear dispersion codes in downlink DS-CDMA systems

Among many proposed space-time codes, the linear dispersion (LD) space-time codes possess many coding advantages and retain a simple decoding at the same time. in this letter, an LD decoder combined with a blind subspace-based multiuser detector (MUD) is studied in the downlink of a DS-CDMA system. To further improve the performance, a subspace-based sphere decoding algorithm is proposed. At last, a decimation-combining processing is applied to the proposed subspace-based blind decoders to reduce the complexity with only slight performance loss.
