We propose a general framework for noncoherent communication using techniques from the field of quantum error correction (QEC). We first propose an approach for analyzing a classical communication channel as a quantum channel, and develop an extension of the QEC conditions to the classical case. We derive a quantum analogue of the noncoherent multiantenna wireless channel. Restricting to the case in which the number of transmitter and receiver antennas are equal and a power of two, we use the framework to develop a family of space-time block codes for noncoherent multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication. Under a Rayleigh fading assumption, we derive the optimal decoder and bound the probability of symbol detection error. We compare our performance to comparable coherent and noncoherent approaches and achieve competitive performance for various antenna geometries and rates.

Wireless Robotics has become an important research topic in the last two decades. The need of controlling a robot to perform tasks remotely has significantly increased with the number of applications in fields like medicine and military, among many others. Taking advantage of current standards like Bluetooth and Wifi, Wireless Robotics calls for low power consumption components, robustness and high data rate through the wireless channel. This call can be fulfilled with a reliable signaling format, satisfying the needs of low power consumption and high spectral efficiency. Besides, continuous phase modulation (CPM) has gained increasing attention due to its favorable trade-off between power and bandwidth efficiency. Multi-h CPM recently appeared as a generalization of single-h schemes so as to further decrease the need for bandwidth expansion over the wireless channel. Despite the interesting characteristics of CPM, the decoding of the received signal is particularly difficult in a multi-path wireless environment with no diversity. To provide some level of diversity, several authors have proposed to combine CPM with space-time block coding. A new family of codes for CPM, based on -orthogonality was recently introduced in Hesse et al. (IEEE Trans Commun 59(11): 3158-3166, 2011). These full rate codes achieve full diversity and a low decoding complexity. In this paper, we detail a non trivial extension of these -orthogonal space-time codes using multi-h signaling schemes. These new codes still achieve full diversity but a better spectral compactness by utilizing the available communication bandwidth more efficiently. Also, the decoding complexity is greatly decreased by using only one correlation filter bank for the detection of all transmitted signals.

MIMO radar beampattern design by using Phased-Costas waveforms with PAR constraints employing a generalized ambiguity function

Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radars have attracted interest due to some important advantages over Phased-array radars. The diversity that comes with multiple waveforms is used to maximize the power in the vicinity of targets and minimize the cross correlation of waveforms reflected from multiple targets for predefined angles. In this study, a novel approach is presented to overcome the limitations of current beamformer design techniques in terms of bandwidth, auto/cross (spatial) correlations, range-doppler resolutions, peak-to-average ratio (PAR) and mean squared error (MSE) for desired beamforming pattern. A generalized ambiguity function formulation is presented which employs all the beamformer design parameters in a mathematically tractable simple manner suitable for constrained optimization. We present Phased-Costas coded waveforms to generate desired beampatterns while minimizing range-doppler sidelobes and target cross-correlations with limited bandwidth. Beamformer design problem is casted as a constrained optimization which includes nonconvex PAR constraints. The resulting NP hard problem with nonconvex objective function is converted to a bi-convex form and the PAR constraints are converted as convex constraints. The final problem is efficiently solved by using Alternating Direction Method of Multipliers (ADMM) technique in polynomial time. The beamformer solution is shown to achieve PAR =1 with very little degradation compared to the unconstrained problem making the ultimate choice for MIMO beamforming applications. Several good features of the designed beamformer are shown through simulations and compared to the known methods.(c) 2023 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

When applying the space-time coding technique into the ultrasound imaging system, the signal-to-noise-ratio (SNR) can be improved. However when the space-time coding combines with the conventional synthetic aperture techniques can result some ghost images because the conventional synthetic aperture technique cannot suppress the axial direction of the side-lobe which emerges after pulse compression and thereby reducing the image quality. To solve the problem of ghost imaging, this paper introduces a new method, which combines the techniques of space-time coding and ultrasonic back-propagation synthetic aperture. The main idea of the method is that different locations using different coding pulse emission. It can be achieved by using the Truncated long code[1]. The synthetic aperture technique based on the ultrasonic back-propagation is then applied for processing the echo signals to further improve the SNR as well as suppress the axial side-lobe. The crosstalk among echo signals can also be reduced. Simulation shows positive results of the new method. Both detection sensitivity and robustness against noise are improved and overall performance of the image system is enhanced.

In this paper, we use the space time coding method in AF (amply-and-forward) cooperative network with two relay node by properly arranging the relay node working state. After deriving the SNR (signal to noise ratio) at the destination node, we show that the physical meaning of the SNR is equivalent to the SNR in the case of a resource transmitting via two paths while the destination received two additional noises coming from the relay node. In order to reach the maxima channel capacity, the optimal relay node position problem has been discussed in this paper under Rayleigh fading channel assumption.

space-time codes are of great interest for wireless communication systems as they can be used to improve the system performance. For optical wireless communications using coherent detection, atmospheric channels can induce fading as well as phase noise to degrade wireless link performance. In this paper, a space-time coded communication system is studied for a wireless optical link using coherent detection over atmospheric turbulence channels. An Alamouti-type space-time coded system structure is proposed when both turbulence-induced fading and phase noise from the channel and lasers are present. The error rate performance is analyzed for the proposed scheme over a wide range of turbulence conditions. Closed-form error rate expressions are derived for such systems for fast performance evaluation. In numerical case studies, the usefulness of the proposed optical wireless space-time coded system is demonstrated by a comparison to a single-input single-output optical wireless communication system.

In this paper, a graphene based reconfigurable intelligent meta-surface structure is proposed for terahertz (THz) communication applications. The proposed structure consists of multilayer unit cells with a graphene radiating patch. By using different biasing of voltage values, the chemical potential (mu c) of the graphene is changed which leads to have different reflected phases. Based on this property we are able to create different reflected phase distributions within the full structure mertasurface array which can be controlled by coding pattern in processing units. The proposed unit cell can provide an acceptable reflection characteristic around 4.35 THz. In addition, by changing the biasing voltage, four states are generated which can transmit 1-bit and 2-bits data. The proposed meta-surface structure has small size and high flexibility in controlling radiation patterns. The simulated results such as reflected phase distributions and reconfigurable radiation patterns show the effectiveness of the proposed design for THz communication.

Generalized frequency division multiplexing (GFDM) is a novel multi-carrier technique that provides the flexibility required by various emerging applications, thanks to the low out-of-band emissions due to better prototype filters and lower loss in spectral efficiency due to combined cyclic prefix for a group of sub-symbols. To improve robustness in multipath fading wireless channels, GFDM can be combined with transmit and receive multi-antenna diversity. In this work, we propose a generic framework for achieving multi-antenna transmit diversity in GFDM via standard orthogonal space time block codes in combination with time reversal coding and simple linear receivers. We have shown the attainment of full diversity order for four and eight transmit antennas. Appropriate array and diversity gains are also achieved by increasing the number of antennas at receiver side. Moreover, a mechanism to reduce GFDM transceiver computational complexity via the use of chirp Z-transform has been proposed along with benchmarking with prior works.

Exploiting the spatial-temporal relationship, a novel programmable metasurface architecture is proposed to suppress undesired harmonics for spectrally efficient communication. A single-bit metasurface array with four-element unit cells is proposed to allow dynamic beamforming of the information metasurface without the use of phase shifters. The proposed method achieves an array factor with a harmonic suppression ratio of more than 15 dB. The meta-element design operates at a center frequency of 4.3 GHz with a bandwidth of 200 MHz, which can be exploited further to suppress higher-order harmonics. Using a carrier frequency of 4.2 GHz with a 100 MHz modulation signal, the proposed metasurface transmitting a signal with 50 MHz bandwidth can achieve an adjacent channel power ratio of -14.38 dB, indicating the feasibility of spatial-temporal programmable metasurface in practical communication applications.
