Current trends in non-geostationary orbit (NGSO) satellite communications pose the challenge of attaining high spectral efficiency with low-complexity user terminals (UTs). In this context, this letter investigates the downlink/forward transmission of linear space-time block coded (STBC) signals through multiple geographically distributed NGSO satellites. As such, by combining the signals through multiple satellites, STBC provides a diversity advantage, which helps in combating the adverse effects of fading and interference at the UT. The main challenge of implementing such a scheme is the lack of time synchronization and the interference effect through a multi-satellite system toward the UT. To address this issue, we propose a digital receiver structure with multiple branches specifically designed to lock onto each satellite of the multi-satellite system, thus providing a solution for simple UT without requiring additional complexity in terms of radio-frequency components. Herein, we consider the zero-forcing (ZF) based diversity combining scheme while deriving the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) expression at UT. Our results demonstrate the SINR improvement brought by the ZF combiner.

This letter studies the secrecy outage probability (SOP) and the secrecy diversity order of Alamouti STBC with decision feedback (DF) detection over the time -selective fading channels. For given temporal correlations, we have derived the exact SOPs and their asymptotic approximations for all possible combinations of detection schemes including joint maximum likehood (JML), zero -forcing (ZF), and DF at Bob and Eve. We reveal that the SOP is mainly influenced by the detection scheme of the legitimate receiver rather than eavesdropper and the achievable secrecy diversity order converges to two and one for JML only at Bob (i.e., JML-JML / ZF / DF) and for the other cases (i.e., ZFJML / ZF / DF, DF-JML / ZF / DF), respectively. Here, p - q combination pair indicates that Bob and Eve adopt the detection method p E {JML , ZF , DF} and q E {JML , ZF , DF}, respectively.

On the Performance of Cache-Free/Cache-Aided STBC-NOMA in Satellite-Terrestrial Networks

Future wireless networks pose several challenges such as high spectral efficiency, wide coverage, massive connectivity, low receiver complexity, etc. To this end, this letter investigates an overlay-based cognitive hybrid satellite-terrestrial network (CHSTN) combining non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) and conventional Alamouti space-time block coding (STBC) techniques. Herein, a decode-and-forward based secondary terrestrial network cooperates with a primary satellite network for dynamic spectrum access. Further, for reliable content delivery and low latency requirements, wireless caching is employed, whereby the secondary network can store the most popular contents of the primary network. Considering the relevant heterogeneous fading channel models and the NOMA-based imperfect successive interference cancellation, we examine the performance of CHSTN for the cache-free (CF) STBC-NOMA and the cache-aided (CA) STBC-NOMA schemes. We assess the outage probability expressions for primary and secondary networks and further, highlight the corresponding achievable diversity orders. Indicatively, the proposed CF/CA STBC-NOMA schemes for CHSTN perform significantly better than the benchmark standalone NOMA and OMA schemes.

In this work, we present the concept of quadrature spatial modulation aided media-based modulation (QSM-MBM), which combines QSM and MBM principles. The proposed two QSM-MBM schemes use dispersion matrices to generate QSM matrix and transmit it by designing two different channel state activation methods, which provides improved transmission rate, diversity gain as well as hardware simplicity. Simulations show that the proposed QSM-MBM schemes achieve remarkably better error performance than the existing MBM schemes.

Performance Analysis of STBC-Based MIMO PLC System in Cyclostationary Noise Environment

The paper proposes a multiple-input multiple-output-based power line communication (PLC) system subject to Rayleigh fading and corrupted by additive cyclostationary Gaussian noise. The proposed coherent receiver structure employs a block reception rule at the reception unit for detecting the space-time block-coded transmitted data symbols. A closed-form expression for the pairwise error probability (PEP) is derived using a characteristic function approach. Exact and asymptotic expressions for the average PEP are obtained for the special case of Alamouti code transmission which show that the PLC system under consideration offers full diversity. Numerical results depict the improvement in the system performance with increase in the number of receive diversity branches and the average signal-to-noise ratio per branch and decrease in the correlation value between the noise samples.

In this paper, we investigate the performance of space-time block-coded multiple-input-multiple-output (STBC-MIMO) LoRa system over Nakagami-m and Ricean fading channels with perfect and imperfect channel state information (CSI). Specifically, we derive the closed-form bit-error-rate expressions and analyze the diversity order of the STBC-MIMO LoRa system with perfect and imperfect CSI, where two common channel estimation error models are considered. Moreover, we perform simulations to evaluate the coverage performance of the system and to verify the accuracy of the theoretical analyses.

The conventional orthogonal space-time block code (OSTBC) with limited feedback has fixed P-1 feedback bits for the specific ntp transmit antennas. A new partial feedback based OSTBC which provides flexible feedback bits is proposed in this paper. The proposed scheme inherits the properties of having a simple decoder and the full diversity of OSTBC, moreover, preserves full data rate. Simulation results show that for ntp transmit antennas, the proposed scheme has the similar performance with the conventional one by using P-1 feedback bits, whereas has the better performance with more feedback bits.

In this paper, a land mobile satellite (LMS) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) is considered, where two satellites simultaneously communicate with a mobile user terminal (UT). Spatial degree of freedom brought by the two satellites is introduced in the channel modeling, aside of other channel parameters including time correlation, shadowing, multipath fading and Doppler effect. Then an algorithm table using Markov multiple-state transition is provided to generate the LMS MIMO channels. Based on the modeled LMS MIMO channels, signal transmission between two satellites and the UT using space-time block coding is considered. Simulation results show that compared to the single satellite communications, the dual-satellite MIMO communications can achieve better bit error rate performance under the same signal-to-noiseratio condition. In particular, the performance of dual-satellite single-polarization communications is slightly worse than that of single-satellite dual-polarization communications, since the spatial correlation is stronger than the polarization correlation.

The performance analysis of a space-time block coded multiple input multiple output system with variable-power (VP) adaptive modulation (AM) over Rician fading channels for imperfect channel state information is presented. The optimum switching thresholds for attaining maximum spectrum efficiency (SE) subject to a target bit error rate (BER) and an average power constraint are derived. In the derivation, a very tight BER expression of quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) is used to develop a new power adaptation scheme that can fulfil the target BER even at low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and achieve higher SE than the scheme using the BER upper bound commonly adopted in the literature. The existence and uniqueness of the Lagrange multiplier used in the constrained optimisation are investigated. It is shown that the Lagrange multiplier is unique when it exists. By using the switching thresholds, the authors obtain closed-form expressions of SE and average BER of the system. Computer simulation shows that the theoretical analysis is in good agreement with simulation. The results show that the proposed VP-AM scheme provides better SE than the constant-power counterparts and the VP-AM scheme using the commonly used BER bound.
