Free-space optical communication is a line-of-sight wireless communication scheme, which is preferred for its number of prime advantages over radio frequency wireless communication, such as no spectrum licensing, large bandwidth, inherent security, electromagnetic compatibility/electromagnetic interference immunity etc. Moreover, free-space optical communication also benefits from low-cost installation and maintenance. It has been studied for the next generation access networks, inter-building connections, ground-to-unmanned aerial vehicle links, underwater communication applications, inter-satellite links, deep space links etc. Among various detection approaches utilized in free-space optical communication, coherent detection can achieve the best sensitivity in a bandwidth-limited condition, effectively demodulate optical multilevel coded signals to attain high spectral e i-ciency, offer excellent background noise rejection. However, such an attractive free-space optical communication suffer from waveform distortion, scintillation, phase fluctuations etc. after transmission in atmospheric channels. Its link losses are almost dependent on atmospheric effects and climatic conditions. In this article, we present an up-to-date survey on coherent free-space optical communication, the atmospheric turbulent effects especially the impacts of turbulence in free-space optical links, and countermeasures against such impairments.

In this conference paper, we study the BER and FER performance of the best-known space-time block codes: the Alamouti scheme and the Golden code. By way of computer simulations using a channel simulator based on the geometrical one-ring scattering model, we show that, for equal quantity of information transmitted per channel use, the performance of the Alamouti code is clearly superior to that of the Golden code for a distance between collocated antennas that is equal to and smaller than the wavelength of the carrier. The performances become comparable for an antenna separation equal to and larger than the double of the carrier wavelength. This important result was not known from the open literature.

To tackle the physical layer security challenges in wireless communication, this paper introduces a multi-user architecture that leverages single-channel blind source separation, centered around a Multi-source Signal Mixture Separator (MSMS). This architecture consists of a multi-user encoder, a channel layer, and a separation decoder, allowing it to handle multiple functions simultaneously, including encoding, modulation, signal separation, demodulation, and decoding. The MSMS receiver effectively enables the separation of numerous user signals, making it exceedingly difficult for unauthorized eavesdroppers to extract valuable information from the mixed signals, thus significantly enhancing communication security. The MSMS can address the challenges of few-shot sample training and achieve joint optimization during transmission by employing a deep learning-based network design. The design of a single receiver reduces system costs and improves spectrum efficiency. The MSMS outperforms traditional space-time block coding (STBC) strategies regarding separation performance, particularly in block Error Rate (BLER) metrics. Modulation constellation diagrams further analyze the effectiveness of multi-source signal mixture separation. Moreover, this study extends the MSMS framework from a two-user scenario to a three-user scenario, further demonstrating the flexibility and scalability of the proposed architecture.

In this paper, we investigate a class of new multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) transmission schemes, dubbed space time line code (STLC), in the context of different mobility situations. We extend its original structure into space and frequency domains and propose a novel frequency line code (SFLC) for combining with orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) in order to achieve potential diversity gains in time-varying multipath fading channels. Specifically, at the transmitter, the STLC/SFLC-OFDM scheme exploits the channel state information (CSI) to linearly encode successive modulated symbols in the time/frequency domain to achieve full diversity gain. At the receiver, it can retrieve the transmit symbols without full CSI, thanks to its special structure. We analyse the impact of time-variant channels to STLC and SFLC to show the expected performance degradation in practical channel, especially in the case of different mobile speeds. Our analysis and simulations show that the BER performance degrades with increasing correlation coefficient, which makes STLC-OFDM more robust in channels with abundant multipath spread, and SFLC-OFDM more robust in channels with high mobility speed. Meanwhile, a guideline is provided for switching when the communication environment changes. Finally, we carry out the practical implementation of STLC-OFDM and SFLC-OFDM schemes and characterize their performance with both computer simulations and an experimental testbed.

Analogue Radio Over Fiber Aided MIMO Design for the learning Assisted Adaptive C-RAN Downlink

The cloud/centralized radio access network (C-RAN) architecture is recognized as a strong candidate for the next generation wireless standards, potentially reducing the total cost of ownership. Spatial modulation (SM) is a cost-effective multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) solution, where only a single-radio frequency chain is required for transmission. In this context, we propose analogue radio over fiber (A-RoF) aided MIMO techniques for learning assisted adaptive C-RAN system, where SM combined with space-time block coding is optically processed relying on the optical frequency indices in the central unit of the C-RAN, which also is capable of tuning the connected remote radio heads (RRHs). Furthermore, to improve the spectral efficiency, we invoke our proposed flexible C-RAN architecture for implementing learning assisted transceiver adaptation, where the number of RRHs connected to a single user and its modulation techniques employed are controlled using the K-nearest neighbor algorithm. The simulation results show that the bit error ratio performance of our A-RoF system is only marginally degraded compared to that operating without the A-RoF link, while benefiting from our energy- and cost-efficient C-RAN design. Moreover, we show that the learning assisted adaptation is capable of outperforming the classic threshold-based adaptation in terms of the system's achievable rate.

Linear threaded algebraic space-time (TAST) codes have shown potential advantage in mitigating the mode-dependent loss in the few-mode-fiber-based mode-division multiplexing (MDM) system. However, the maximum-likelihood (ML) detector employed at the receiver of the MDM system greatly suffers from exponential computational complexity. In this work, we first examine the necessity of space-time coding in the MDM system. On this basis, a new hybrid detection, which integrates the improved reduced-search (IRS) method and the decision feedback equalizer (DFE), is proposed for the TAST-assisted MDM system, in which DFE is employed to detect the more reliable tributaries to obtain a near-ML solution, while IRS is responsible for finding the best solution in the remaining set with a reduced number of candidates. Simulation results show that the proposed detection method can achieve near-optimal solutions and has a low computational complexity. Moreover, it has the attractive advantage of flexible adjustment in the tradeoff between system performance and computational complexity.

This thesis discusses the theory, design, and implementation of a physical layer security (PLS) system on a multiple-input, multiple-output (MIMO) software defined radio (SDR) with wavelet packet modulation (WPM). The PLS implementation leverages channel state information, gained via channel reciprocity, and applies it to an artificial noise masking algorithm formulated for MIMO SDR systems. The masking algorithm is realized with static elements as well as random elements that could prevent an adversary from estimating the additive mask components. Over-the-air testing provides evidence that the artificial noise mask is effective at obscuring a transmitted signal from an eavesdropper while remaining transparent to the intended receiver. Bit error rate calculations are performed for varied signal-to-mask ratio and LOS vs. BLOS conditions.

Aunified error analysis of multi-antenna systems with orthogonal space-time block coding (OSTBC) using transmit antenna selection (TAS) over Nakagami-m channels in the presence of feedback delay and channel estimation error is presented, where the number of transmit antennas is arbitrarily selected. For imperfect channel state information (CSI), the Nakagami-m channel is modeled as the sum of Nakagami-(m) over cap channel and independent Gaussian channel error. By this model, accurate and closed-form approximate bit error rate (BER) expressions of TAS-OSTBC for M-ary quadrature amplitude modulation and M-ary phase-shift keying are derived by using the moment generating function of received SNR. With the approximate BER formula, the number of antennas to be selected for transmission can be adapted by minimizing the BER of the system with imperfect CSI. The diversity and coding gains of TAS-OSTBC with K receive antennas and M antennas selected from N transmit antennas for transmission are analyzed at high SNR. For noninteger m K, the upper and lower bounds of the diversity gain for different CSI and estimation error scenarios are derived. But for integer m K, the results indicate that the upper and lower bounds are equal achieving the full diversity order of m K N for perfect CSI, zero diversity order and partial diversity order of m M K for estimation error variance being fixed and being a decreasing function of average SNR, respectively. The coding gain is affected by M, N, K, Nakagami parameter m, code rate, modulation, and channel correlation coefficients. Simulation results verify the validity of the theoretical

The space-time block coding scheme was developed to reduce the bit error rate for the receiver by transmitting multiple copies of the data during several symbol times. Recently, the 12-QAM scheme with two-time dimensions was proposed to reduce PAPR for the transmitter by removing corner signal points in the constellation. This paper proposes an efficient method to apply the 12-QAM scheme with two-space dimensions including error correction on the constellation to the Alamouti space-time block coding for reliable communications. In the performance results, the error performance of the Alamouti space-time block coding using the proposed QAM is compared with the one using the existing QAM. In addition, it is shown that the performance of 12-QAM with two receiving antennas and error correction on constellation is the best one except 4-QAM with two antennas.

In this paper, a combination of space-time block Coded Spatial Modulation with Hybrid Analog-Digital Beamforming (STBC-SM-HBF) for 60 GHz Millimeter-wave (mmWave) communications is proposed in order to take advantage of the merits of Spatial Modulation (SM), space-time block Codes (STBC), Analog Beamforming (ABF), and digital precoding techniques while avoiding their drawbacks. This proposed system benefits from the multiplexing gain of SM, from the transmit diversity gain of STBC and from the Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) gain of the beamformer. The simulation results demonstrate that the Zero Forcing (ZF) and the Minimum Mean Square Error (MMSE) precoded STBC-SM systems have better Bit Error Rate (BER) performance than the precoded SM system, and the former showed a performance degradation compared to STBC-SM system tough. Furthermore, the error performance is significantly improved by employing an array of ABF which improves the system performance as the number of antenna array elements increases due to providing a beamforming gain, which is hence of great significance to the Fifth Generation (5G) mmWave communications. In addition, it is demonstrated that a minimum of 2 antenna elements in the proposed scheme of STBC-SM-HBF are required to obtain better error performance than that of the conventional SM and STBC-SM systems under the same spectral efficiency of 2 bits/s/Hz.
