Alamouti-type space-time block coding is studied for optical wireless communication systems using coherent detection over atmospheric turbulence channels. Atmospheric turbulence-induced fading and phase noise are known to impair the performance of coherent optical wireless systems. Two new Alamouti-type space-time coded architectures are proposed to overcome turbulence-induced fading and phase noise from transmitter lasers, receiver local oscillators, and turbulence channels. Their error rate performance is analyzed for a wide range of turbulence conditions. With developed analytical error rate expressions, the usefulness of the proposed Alamouti-type space-time block coding is demonstrated for coherent optical wireless communication systems. Numerical results confirm the performance improvements of the proposed systems over that of single-input-single-output systems.

This paper proposes a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) transmission scheme for M-ary modulations, called Spatially Modulated Orthogonal space-time block coding (SM-OSTBC), based on the concept of Spatial Constellation (SC) codewords introduced by Le at el. [1]. In the proposed scheme, transmit codeword matrices are generated by multiplying SC matrices with codewords constructed from Orthogonal space-time block Codes (O-STBC). The maximum spectral efficiency of the proposed scheme is equal to (n(T) - 2+ log(2) M) bpcu, where n(T) is the number of transmit antennas and M is the modulation order. The SC matrices provide a means of carrying information bits together with the O-STBC codewords and allow the SM-OSTBC scheme to achieve second-order transmit diversity by satisfying the non-vanishing determinant property. A systematic method to design the SC codewords for an even number of transmit antennas greater than 3 is presented. A single-stream maximum-likelihood (ML) decoder, which requires a low computational complexity thanks to the structure of the SM-OSTBC codewords and to the orthogonality of the O-STBCs, and a sphere decoder with further reduced signal processing complexity are developed. The bit error rate (BER) performance of the proposed scheme is studied by using both theoretical union bound analysis and computer simulations. Finally, simulation results are presented in order to compare BER performance, energy efficiency and decoding complexity of the proposed scheme with those of several existing MIMO transmission schemes.

A high rate space-time block coded spatial modulation scheme with cyclic structure (STBC-CSM) is presented in this letter. In the proposed STBC-CSM scheme, a pair of transmit antennas are chosen out of the total transmit antennas to send Alamouti's STBC, whose two signal symbols are drawn from two different constellations, and the antenna pairs activated in different codewords are moving cyclically along the total transmit antenna array. To exploit the diversity advantage of Alamouti's STBC, the optimization of STBC-CSM is given by maximizing its coding gain. Moreover, the proposed scheme allows for a low-complexity maximum-likelihood (ML) detector due to the orthogonality of Alamouti's STBC. The simulation results verify our theoretical analysis and demonstrate the performance advantages of our proposed STBC-CSM over the existing schemes such as STBC-SM, H-STBC-SM, CIOD-SM-H and SM.

In this letter, a high-rate space-time block coded (STBC) spatial modulation (SM) scheme called STBC-SM(n, k) is presented, in which according to the codewords of the (n, k) error correcting code (ECC), different pairs of antennas are activated to transmit STBC. For nT = 2n transmit antennas, the STBCSM(n, k) scheme can achieve the flexible transmission rates. Furthermore, two rotation angles are optimized to guarantee the transmit diversity of two for STBC-SM(n, k). Owing to the orthogonality of STBC, the new design enables a low-complexity maximum likelihood (ML) decoder. Simulation results are presented to verify the performance of the proposed scheme.

A novel algorithm for blind identification of spatial multiplexing and Alamouti space-time block code is proposed in this paper. It relies on the Kolmogrov-Smirnov test, and employs the maximum distance between the empirical cumulative distribution functions of two statistics derived from the received signal. The proposed algorithm does not require estimation of the channel coefficients, noise statistics and modulation type, and is robust to the carrier frequency offset and impulsive noise. Additionally, it outperforms the algorithms in the literature under a variety of transmission impairments.

In this paper we propose a cooperative protocol for cognitive wireless networks that can improve the overall system spectral efficiency when a secondary user (SU) incorrectly transmits over the same resource with the primary user (PU). The interfering transmissions are received at relay nodes, that form the cooperative network, and are decoded with successive interference cancellation (SIC). Depending on the decoding results, each relay applies independently a space-time code (STC) to the result and then the relays forward the coded signals simultaneously. The advantages of the protocol are first that it operates passively without the need for source cooperation, and second that it does not adopt a different mode of cooperation for different average channel conditions. Comparative simulations with a state-of-the-art multi-source transmission protocol reveal that our protocol can minimize the impact of incorrectly detecting a PU transmission from the perspective of the overall system spectral efficiency.

Many generalized fading distributions are given in terms of special functions, complicating the analysis of wireless performance metrics. This paper presents novel approximations to the extended incomplete gamma function, the modified Bessel function of the second type, and the generalized Q-function. New simpler and unified form for the probability density function of the extended generalized-K (EGK) and M-N distributions is developed, avoiding complicated and computationally-expensive functions, e. g. Fox and Meijer-G. Based on the new unified PDF and the proposed approximations, we derive novel generic and unified expressions for the average bit error rate and average channel capacity for the recently introduced six most generalized fading channels, namely the EGK, the M-N, the alpha-eta-mu, alpha-lambda-mu, alpha-kappa-mu, and alpha-lambda-eta-mu, including the generalized-K, generalized Nakagami-m, the alpha-mu, the eta-mu, the lambda-mu, the kappa-mu, the Nakagami-Lognormal, the Weibull, the Rice, the Hoyt, the Maxwell and other fading scenarios as special cases. The Additive White Generalized Gaussian Noise (AWGGN) is considered as the noise model, that includes the AWGN, the Laplacian, the Gamma and the impulsive noise as special cases, being an application to the generalized Q-function approximation. Moreover, novel analysis for space-time block Codes in generalized-K fading is also developed as an application to the developed approximation of the modified Bessel function. The derived expressions are very simple and analytically traceable. Monte Carlo simulation and published work corroborate our obtained results.

In this paper, we propose a space-time block coded (STBC) amplify-and-forward cooperative (STBC-Co-AF) relay which requires no knowledge of CSI at relay station (RS). In STBC-Co-AF relay, the source node transmits 2-block signal to both RS and the destination node in the first time slot and then, RS transmits amplified STBC-coded signal to the destination node in the second time slot. The destination node performs a series of frequency-domain equalization (FDE), diversity combining, and STBC decoding by viewing the concatenation of the channels between the source node-RS link and between the RS-destination node link as an equivalent channel. We evaluate, by computer simulation, the average bit error rate (BER) performance when using STBC-Co-AF relay and show that the STBC-Co-AF relay can achieves the BER performance superior to Co-AF relay.

Military communication relies on robust and secure physical links that adhere to regulatory protocols and standards for communication. In unfamiliar terrain or hostile conditions these physical links can undergo deep-fading or intentional signal jamming, deteriorating the ongoing communication. Traditional retransmission technology or power adaptation would not be applicable to correct the outages seen in such scenarios, and often relays have been sought out as the solution. However given the exigency related to in-battle military communications, the latency with relaying cannot be tolerated and designing a scheme that is time-efficient is crucial. To this end, we discuss a practical approach to establishing bi-directional communication via a support node that acts a partial relay to the stranded military units, while maintaining its ongoing communication. This is possible through the use of a broadcast spatial multiplexing protocol implemented through space-time block coding at the relay. Our simulation results show us improved BER (bit-error rate) performance than the perfect direct link for high-SNR (signal-to-noise ratio) regimes, and comparable performance across the spectrum. We also demonstrate that our scheme is impervious to power asynchronicities between the stranded military nodes.

In this paper we propose a cooperative protocol and a symbol decoding algorithm that target improved performance in the presence of inter-cell interference (ICI) in wireless cellular networks. Our scheme uses the wireless signals that interfere at relay nodes located at the cell edge instead of discarding them. The relays are non-regenerative and apply a space-time code (STC) to the interfered signal. Subsequently, the relays broadcast the coded signals. At the destinations the interfered and ST-coded signals are decoded in two stages. First by decoding the STC, and then by applying successive interference cancellation (SIC). Simulation results for Rayleigh fading channel reveal significant throughput benefits even in the low SNR regime. We also present results for a small-scale LTE-based cellular scenario and we compare our scheme against the Coordinated MultiPoint (CoMP) transmission mode of LTE-A that is based on beamforming.
