Bit-interleaved space-frequency coded modulation for OFDM systems

We present an orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) system with bit-interleaved space-frequency coded modulation for frequency-selective fading channels employing multiple transmit and receive antennas. OFDM is used to transform a frequency-selective fading channel into multiple flat fading channels, and space-frequency trellis coding combined with bit-interleaving is used to exploit space and frequency diversity. The performance of such an approach is evaluated by analytical bounds and simulation. The proposed scheme is an efficient method to employ multiple transmit antennas to increase the data rate and, at the same time, improve the performance by means of increased diversity obtained with bit-interleaved coded modulation and multiple receive antennas. A block precoding method is proposed to further improve the diversity order. An efficient sphere decoding algorithm is also developed for reducing the decoding complexity of the proposed scheme.

An orthogonal space-time coded CPM system with fast decoding for two transmit antennas

Trellis-coded space-time (TC-ST) coding for continuous-phase modulation (TC-ST-CPM) was recently proposed by Zhang and Fitz. In this paper, we propose an orthogonal space-time coding for CPM (OST-CPM) systems and two transmit antennas. In the proposed OST-CPM, signals from two transmit antennas at any time t are orthogonal while both of them have continuous phases. Similar to Alamouti's OST coding for phase-shift keying (PSK) and quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) systems, the newly proposed OST-CPM has a fast decoding algorithm.

The use of multiple antennas for wireless communication systems has gained overwhelming interest during the last decade - both in academia and industry. Multiple antennas can be utilized in order to accomplish a multiplexing gain, a diversity gain, or an antenna gain, thus enhancing the bit rate, the error performance, or the signal-to-noise-plus-interference ratio of wireless systems, respectively. With an enormous amount of yearly publications, the field of multiple-antenna systems, often called multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems, has evolved rapidly. To date, there are numerous papers on the performance limits of MIMO systems, and an abundance of transmitter and receiver concepts has been proposed. The objective of this literature survey is to provide non-specialists working in the general area of digital communications with a comprehensive overview of this exciting research field. To this end, the last ten years of research efforts are recapitulated, with focus on spatial multiplexing and spatial diversity techniques. In particular, topics such as transmitter and receiver structures, channel coding, MIMO techniques for frequency-selective fading channels, diversity reception and space-time coding techniques, differential and non-coherent schemes, beamforming techniques and closed-loop MIMO techniques, cooperative diversity schemes, as well as practical aspects influencing the performance of multiple-antenna systems are addressed. Although the list of references is certainly not intended to be exhaustive, the publications cited will serve as a good starting point for further reading.

A Complete Complementary Coded MIMO System and Its Performance in Multipath Channels

In this paper, we propose a new system architecture using complete complementary (CC) codes for a multicarrier MIMO CDMA system to combat multipath fading in wireless channels. Unlike traditional MIMO systems, complementary codes were designed at chip-level to achieve time and frequency-spreading for each antenna. We analyze the system performance in multipath fading channels. A closed form expression of bit error rate (BER) performance is obtained. Extensive simulations were conducted to verify the analytical results. Our results indicate that a CC coded MIMO system can effectively decrease BER and take advantage of diversity gain.

Strategies for ARQ in 2 x 2 MIMO systems

Packet retransmission strategies are presented for 2x2 MIMO spatial multiplexing systems. Antennas for retransmission are selected to maximize an approximation of the throughput of the system. A sign change or conjugate operation is allowed for retransmitted packets. The proposed scheme performs selection of retransmission antennas based on the CSI at the receiver: only I bit of feedback is additionally required, along with the acknowledgement bits. When 2 packets are decoded with errors, retransmission follows a space time block code structure, allowing a seamless switching between spatial multiplexing and space time block coding.

Improved 16-QAM constellation labeling for BI-STCM-ID with the Alamouti scheme

We design constellation labeling maps for bit-interleaved space-time coded modulation with iterative decoding (BI-STCM-ID) over Rayleigh block-fading channels using the Alamouti scheme and N-r receive antennas. To achieve the largest asymptotic coding gain from the constellation labeling, we propose a new design criterion that maximizes the (-2N(r))-th power mean of the squared Euclidean distances associated with all "error-free feedback" events in the constellation. Based on this power mean criterion, we show that the labeling optimization problem falls into the category of quadratic assignment problems. We propose two novel 16-QAM labeling maps that are particularly designed for N-r = 1 and N-r = 2, respectively. Numerical results show that both labeling maps achieve about 1 dB coding gain over the conventional 16-QAM modified set partitioning labeling.

Land mobile-satellite MIMO capacity predictions

Satellite-MIMO, space-time coded for capacity gain, is investigated, and complementary cumulative distribution function outage and capacity predictions are provided using a verified physical-statistical MIMO land mobile-satellite channel model. Capacity results obtained for a single satellite, single antenna terminal (SISO), a dual satellite, single antenna terminal (2 x 1 MISO) and a dual satellite, dual antenna terminal (2 x 2 MIMO) system are compared, showing the benefit of satellite-MIMO.

Target detection and localization using. MIMO radars and sonars

In this paper, we propose a new space-time coding configuration for target detection and localization by radar or sonar systems. In common active array systems, the transmitted signal is usually coherent between the different elements of the array. This configuration does not allow array processing in the transmit mode. However, space-time coding of the transmitted signals allows to digitally steer the beam pattern in the transmit in addition to the received signal. The ability to steer the transmitted beam pattern, helps to avoid beam shape loss. We show that the configuration with spatially orthogonal signal transmission is equivalent to additional virtual sensors which extend the array aperture with virtual spatial tapering. These virtual sensors can be used to form narrower beams with lower sidelobes and, therefore, provide higher performance in target detection, angular estimation accuracy, and angular resolution. The generalized likelihood ratio test for target detection and the maximum likelihood and Cramer-Rao bound for target direction estimation are derived for an arbitrary signal coherence matrix. It is shown that the optimal performance is achieved for orthogonal transmitted signals. Target detection and localization performances are evaluated and studied theoretically and via simulations.

space-time code design for correlated ricean MIMO channels at finite SNR

space-time code (STC) designs commonly rely on the assumptions of independent and identically distributed (i.i.d.) Rayleigh channels (being either slow or fast fading) and high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). However, it has been shown that poor scattering conditions can have detrimental effects on the performance of STCs and that the behavior of codes at high SNR is radically different from the finite SNR behavior. This calls for new design criteria that correctly predict the behavior of codes in correlated channels at finite SNR. In this paper, we investigate how spatially and temporally correlated Ricean fading affects the performance of STCs at finite SNR. We derive a code design criterion leading to robust STCs in a wide variety of propagation conditions and do not require any channel knowledge at the transmitter. Codes satisfying this criterion are shown to perform sensibly better in correlated channels than codes designed only for i.i.d. slow or fast Rayleigh-fading channels. Examples of space-time trellis codes and algebraic codes are proposed in order to illustrate the developed criterion.

Performance of a space-time block coded code division multiple access system over Nakagami-m fading channels

By introducing an orthogonal space-time coding scheme, multiuser code division multiple access (CDMA) systems with different space time codes are given, and corresponding system performance is investigated over a Nakagami-m fading channel. A low-complexity multiuser receiver scheme is developed for space-time block coded CDMA (STBC-CDMA) systems. The scheme can make full use of the complex orthogonality of space-time block coding to simplify the high decoding complexity of the existing scheme. Compared to the existing scheme with exponential decoding complexity, it has linear decoding complexity. Based on the performance analysis and mathematical calculation, the average bit error rate (BER) of the system is derived in detail for integer m and non-integer m, respectively. As a result, a tight closed-form BER expression is obtained for STBC-CDMA with an orthogonal spreading code, and an approximate closed-form BER expression is attained for STBC-CDMA with a quasi-orthogonal spreading code. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme can achieve almost the same performance as the existing scheme with low complexity. Moreover, the simulation results for average BER are consistent with the theoretical analysis.
