In this paper we analyze the performance of a general user cooperative space-time coded system in wireless network. The upper bound of the pairwise error probability (PEP) is derived, on slow, quasi-slow and fast fading channels. From the upper bounds, we show that cooperative space-time coded system in wireless network can achieve full cooperation diversity gain and coding gain. Based on the performance analysis, we formulate a generalized space-time code design criteria to construct better codes for user cooperation systems.

For this system, an optimal operating system with maximum-likehood (ML)-decoding is demonstrated, and furthermore, to reduce encoding complexity, an asymptotic optimal operating system is also proposed. In this paper, we use a 4 x 4 MIMO testbed to investigate the experimental performance of the blind channel estimation technique presented in [1]. The operating frequency throughout all experiments was selected to be 2.47 GHz and the transmission bandwidth was 20 MHz. Our experimental results show that the performance of the blind technique can be very close to that of non-blind training based receiver which uses a significant bandwidth overhead as compared to the blind approach developed in [1].

In a MIMO wireless communications system, a space-time block code specifies how the data symbols are transmitted over different antennas at different time instants. A hybrid space-time code attempts to obtain some of the available diversity and multiplexing gains, achieving low error probability and high data rate. The LD STBC-VBLAST hybrid code layers one spatial-multiplexing antenna (to increase the data rate) and one Alamouti encoder (to provide diversity). A low-complexity, nearly optimum decoder algorithm for LD STBC-VBLAST is presented. Its error probability is comparable to that of a maximum-likelihood detector, with much lower computational complexity. The performance of the detector is evaluated over both uncorrelated and correlated channels. It is shown that the proposed decoder remains nearly optimum despite channel correlation.

Nowadays, the use of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) concepts is being investigated to improve performance of power line communication (PLC) systems, however few attentions have being put on how it can be applied to improve narrowband technologies based upon single-carrier (SC) modulation. In this paper, a multiple-input single-output (MISO)-SC system for narrowband PLC is devised and the applicability of feedback channel information into the MISO-SC system is considered. Simulation results with outdoor PLC channels and additive noise composed of background and impulsive components indicate that the MISO-SC system with partial feedback channel information can surpass the performances of MISO-SC without feedback and SISO-SC system with and without feedback channel.

Super-orthogonal space-time trellis codes (SOSTTCs) can be systematically designed by computer by using the generator matrix representation. However, an exhaustive search becomes prohibitively complex as the number of states or the constellation size increases. Even for 8PSK, the complexity would be prohibitive. In this paper, it is shown that the number of matrices that generate unique codes and satisfy the set-partitioning rules is significantly smaller than the total number of possible matrices. Rules for the design of the generator matrices so that set-partitioning rules are satisfied are proposed. These rules lead to significant complexity reductions and are required for MPSK or MQAM SOSTTCs and codes with more than two transmit antennas. New QPSK and 8PSK SOSTTCs with spectral efficiencies of 2 and 3 b/s/Hz, respectively, which outperform previously known codes are presented.

In this paper, we propose a modified Alamouti-based path selection (MAPS) strategy for multihop relay communication systems, and investigate a system performance in comparison with single path selection (SPS) and Alamouti-based path selection (APS) strategies. We also investigate the effect of a channel quality on the system performance when a channel is presumably good in the first hop and the last hop, respectively. Simulation results indicate that the proposed strategy achieves a better performance and gain more diversity than APS and SPS strategies. In addition, when the channel quality in the first hop is good, the system performance is superior to the case of good channel quality in the last hop.

This paper proposes a new differential super-quasi-orthogonal space-time trellis codes (SQOSTTC) with single-symbol maximum-likelihood (ML) decoding. Firstly, a new joint constellation, which can be used to construct a unitary matrix for quasi-orthogonal space-time block code (QOSTBC), is designed. Secondly, based on the joint constellation and criterion of maximizing the coding gain distance (CGD), set-partitioning is done. Finally, we introduce the simple single-symbol maximum-likelihood (ML) decoding. Simulation results show that our differential SQOSTTC can get better performance than the differential super-orthogonal space-time trellis code (SOSTTC) 151 with four transmit antennas at the transmission rate of 1.5 bits/s/Hz and lower decoding complexity than the differential super-pseudo-orthogonal space-time trellis codes (SPOSTTC) [13] and the differential SOSTTC [14] at the transmission rate of 2 bits/s/Hz.

This paper presents the effects of partitioning scattering arrays with specific attention to retrodirective structures. By segmenting large arrays, total data transmission can be drastically increased while severely reducing design concerns associated with retrodirective feed networks. The behavior of partitioned retrodirective arrays is observed and quantified from link budget, information theory, and time-varying beam-forming perspectives. A retrodirective device is measured and it's characteristics used to simulate time-varying beam-forming behavior when used as a module in a partitioned pseudo-retrodirective array. The significant increase in range and channel capacity due to these structures will enable RFID systems that operate in microwave and millimeter wave regimes.
