Accurate channel state information (CSI) is required at the receiver in a space-time coded OFDM system. In this paper, two channel estimation methods based on,least squares (LS) criteria for space-time coded OFDM systems are studied and compared in detail. The channel frequency response estimator uses training sequences that rely on real orthogonal designs for acquisition, while the channel impulse response estimator exploits space-time coded sequence for both acquisition and tracking modes. Computer simulations show that both estimators work well in a Rayleigh flat-fading channel. The performance of the estimators is similar in the acquisition mode if the correlation between the subcarriers is taken into account similarly in both cases.

A pilot-assisted, conditional model-order estimation (CME) based channel estimation algorithm is presented. The algorithm is proposed for MIMO-OFDM systems and can detect both channel frequency responses and number of multi-path taps. In addition, the modified CME estimator is also verified its capacity in determining the nonzero taps. The performance of the proposed approach is compared to the popular minimum description length (MDL) algorithm for estimation of the number of channel paths, by means of simulation in the context of a 2x2 MIMO-OFDM transceiver system. Result indicates that the new algorithm is superior in channel order estimation to the MDL algorithm in MMO-OFDM system over a noisy frequency selective fading channel.

space-time coding have been proposed recently for the MIMO wireless communication systems. Most of these space-time coding schemes use the assumption that either no channel state information, or the channel mean / covariance information, is available at the transmitter. In this paper, we propose a new space-time coding scheme for a close-loop transmission system, where quantized channel phase information is available at the transmitter. A new performance criterion is derived for the quasi-static fading channel. This design criterion is then used to construct a new class of space-time trellis codes. The proposed code construction is based on the concatenation of a standard M-TCM outer code with an inner code. The inner code is selected from a series of inner codes using the channel phase feedback. The series of inner codes are constructed based on the systematic set partitioning of two classes of space-time signal designs. Simulation results show significant improvement over the other space-time trellis codes in the literature. In addition, the proposed coding scheme enjoys low peak to average power ratio, simple decoding, and easy implementation without complicated eigen-analysis.

For error-correction codes, the optimal coding rate can vary and depend on factors including channel, time-varying fading, environmental interference, power, bandwidth allocation, communication content, and application. Rate adaptive coding schemes are thus important for robust communications. This writeup proposes and studies a rate adaptive low density parity check (LDPC) coding scheme using non-binary Galois fields (GF). The algorithm uses a single low complexity encoding structure, but maintains strong near-capacity performance at arbitrary rational rates. The rate adaptive encoder can be used in a space-time code for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication systems and is shown to achieve near capacity performance at various rates and different MIMO configurations.

In this paper we analyze the performance of space time Trellis Coded-Scrambling Diversity (STTC-SD) scheme for WCDMA downlink, when a linear minimum mean squared error multi-user detection (LMMSE-MUD) receiver is used. STTC-SD scheme for CDMA systems was introduced in [1, 2] and was shown to perform better than conventional STTC scheme under low system loads. At high system loads, the STTC-SD scheme suffers excessively from multiple access interference. In this paper we show that, by using a LMMSE-MUD receiver, this problem can be rectified so that STTC-SD scheme performs significantly better than standard STTC scheme at all system loads.

In recent years, due to the increasing demand of the data transmission rate, a lot of research based on Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) system is established. MIMO systems can increase the system capacity and improve transmission reliability. However, the multiple RF chains associated with multiple antennas are costly in terms of size, power and hardware. Antenna selection techniques have been applied in MIMO system design to reduce the system complexity and cost. In this paper, we consider two schemes of antenna selection in correlated Rayleigh channels i.e. the maximal ratio transmission and Orthogonal space-time Block Code technique. The simulation results illustrate that;the new antenna selection scheme can obtain performance close to the optimum selection with low computational complexity.

MIMO Technology is an essential component of HSPA, LTE, LTE-A and its a key technology for LTE where adaptive switching modes at e-NB provides higher throughput for user close to e-NB and broadens its coverage range for user at edges of cell. MIMO combined with OFDMA is a crucial change in air interface of 4G as compared with 3G. To improve the performance of LTE downlink system, this paper investigate the MIMO modes adaptation schemes based on channel correlation, Rank, Doppler shift and SNR etc. 3GPP LTE has defined seven MIMO mode for adaptation and different Modulation and coding Switching Scheme(MCS) to enhance the performance of LTE downlink. This paper is considering only four modes i. e, spatial multiplexing for open loop and closed loop, transmit beamforming, and transmit diversity. This paper primarily focuses on how to take spatial correlation into account which also consider the highly Doppler channel for selecting particular MIMO mode. Simulation results show that correlation factor plays a critical factor for choosing index for switching of modes.

Hybrid concatenated code is a combination of parallel and serial concatenated codes. In this paper, two hybrid concatenated super-orthogonal space-time trellis code (SOSTTC) applying iterative decoding is proposed for flat fading channels. The encoding operation is based on the concatenation of convolutional codes, interleaving and super-orthogonal space-time trellis codes. The first concatenated scheme consists of a serial concatenation of a parallel concatenated convolutional code with a SOSTTC while the second consist of parallel concatenation of two serially concatenated convolutional and SOSTTC codes. The decoding of these two schemes is described and their bit error rate (BER) and frame error rate (FER) performance evaluated by computer simulation in Rayleigh fading channels. The proposed topologies are shown to perform better than existing concatenated schemes with constituent code of convoluntional and space time codes in literatures.

We propose a new family of high-rate space-time block codes called embedded orthogonal space-time (EOS) codes. The family is parameterized by the number of transmit antennas, which can be any positive integer, and by the rate, which can be as high as half the number of transmit antennas. The proposed codes are based on a new concept called embedding, whereby information symbols of a traditional space-time code are replaced by codewords from a second space-time code. The EOS codes use orthogonal designs as this second code, which induces orthogonality in an effective channel matrix and leads to reduced-complexity decoding. The EOS codes have lower decoding complexity than previously reported space-time codes for any number of transmit antennas, and for any rate. Furthermore, simulation results show that the EOS codes outperform previous constructions for certain number of antennas and certain rates, when performance is measured by error probability in quasistatic Rayleigh fading.

space-time coded massive (STCM) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system provides superior bit error rate (BER) performance compared with the conventional space-time coding and massive MIMO techniques. The transmitter of the STCM-MIMO system consists of a large antenna array. In a practical system, the self-interference created by the signals transmitted by the elements of this antenna array, known as mutual coupling (MC), degrades the performance of the system. The MC effect is pronounced in communication systems with a large antenna array. On the other hand, increasing the number of transmitting antennas results in improved BER performance. Hence, there is a trade off in selecting the optimum number of transmitting antennas in an STCM-MIMO system. In order to take the impact of MC into account, we have derived an analytical expression for the received signal to accurately model the STCM-MIMO system under the existence of the MC effect. We present an algorithm to select the optimal number of antennas to minimize mutual coupling and the system bit error rate (BER). Through computer simulations, we investigate the BER performance of the STCM-MIMO system for different numbers of array elements.
