Since a novel diversity technique called a space-time line code (STLC) was invented, previous studies have focused on the analysis of a rate-1 STLC assuming two receive antennas. For the state-of-the-art STLCs with transmit antenna selection (TAS), in this study, the ergodic capacities of TAS-STLC systems with various code rates are mathematically derived, not only for a TAS-STLC system with two receive antennas but also for those with three or four. To this end, the probability density function of the instantaneous signal-to-noise ratio was characterized. The accuracy of the mathematical analysis was validated by a numerical simulation. This study is significant for investigating the fundamental performance of TAS-STLC systems.

Efficient User Subset Selection for Multiuser space-time line code Systems

This paper considers the problem of user subset (US) selection for minimizing the bit error rate (BER) of multi-user space-time line code (MU-STLC) multiple-input multiple-output systems with fairness-aware per-user power allocation. The optimal selection criterion suitable for MU-STLC transmissions based on zero forcing (ZF) precoding is given and two efficient algorithms are then proposed. First, an incremental search approach is presented for US selection in the MU-STLC systems. The proposed suboptimal solution to BER minimization starts an empty US and adds users one by one, where the lowcomplexity recursive computation of the block matrix inverse is further performed. Second, by avoiding recurring matrix computations in each incremental procedure of the first algorithm, a more efficient algorithm is developed. It is observed through simulation results that the proposed incremental-based algorithms achieve most US selection gains with very low complexity. In addition, it is demonstrated that when there are N-T transmit antennas, U users (each user has 2 receive antennas), and K selected users, the achievable upper diversity order of the ZF precoding-based MU-STLC systems with optimal US selection is given as 2(N-T - K + 1)(U - K + 1). The analytical diversity order is well-matched with simulation results.

In this article, a linear precoding weight vector is designed to enhance the minimum signal-to-interference plus noise ratio (SINR) of a space-time line code (STLC)-based multicast users. To solve the intractable minimum SINR maximization problem, the optimal weight vector for each STLC user is derived, and then, the individual optimal weight vectors are linearly combined. The designed linear precoding vector improves the minimum and average SINR of the multicast users as verified by numerical results. Numerical results also verify that the STLC-based multicast is a promising scheme, especially, if a transmitter has a large number of transmit antennas and the additive noises are severe at the users.

Full-Rate space-time line code for Four Receive Antennas

For multiple-input multiple-output systems with four receive antennas, conventional space-time line codes (STLCs) have supported code rates of 3/4, 4/7, and 1/2. To provide a wider range of transmission rates, we herein propose a rate-1 STLC for four-receive-antenna systems. We present an encoding method to achieve full rate and devise a simple decoding scheme that does not require full channel state information at the receiver. Assuming a large number of transmit antennas, we analyze the bit error rate performance and demonstrate that the proposed STLC can achieve full spatial diversity.

In this article, we investigate a secure uplink multiple-input multiple-output communication system, in which the multiple users transmit information to a legitimate access point (AP) when a passive eavesdropper exists. A secure multiple access method is proposed for single-antenna users by employing space-time line codes (STLCs), which enables noncoherent detection at the legitimate AP without channel state information (CSI) and achieves full spatial diversity. While extending the secure STLC scheme from the single-antenna to two-antenna users by combining the STLC with artificial noise (AN) injection, we design a low-complexity AN signals with the optimal power control scheme. The proposed AN is ensured to be eliminated after STLC decoding at the legitimate AP, while sustained in eavesdropper's received signals as interference. Theoretical sum secrecy rates are derived by considering time-varying fading channels with the uncertainty of CSI at the users, and the numerical results verify that the proposed STLC schemes outperform the existing secure transmission schemes in terms of the sum secrecy rate.

The performance of space-time line code (STLC) systems employing phase-shift keying (PSK) modulation has not been studied, despite the distinct advantage of eliminating the need to estimate partial channel state information at the receiver. In this study, we comprehensively analyze the fundamental performance of STLC systems when utilizing PSK modulation, focusing on three essential aspects: 1) symbol error rate, 2) bit error rate, and 3) diversity gain and coding gain. The mathematical analysis is rigorously validated through numerical simulations, revealing system performance behavior concerning modulation order and the number of transmit antennas. © 2023 IEEE.

In this study, we consider a space-time line code (STLC) system with N transmit antennas and two receive antennas. Although the STLC system is scalable to an arbitrary number of transmit antennas, a large number of them will increase the hardware cost and complicate the implementation of the system. To resolve this practical limitation, we propose a transmit antenna selection (TAS) scheme for the N-by-2 STLC system. If S <= N antennas are used for the transmission, the STLC transmitter selects the S antennas such that the instantaneous signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is maximized. For a comprehensive performance analysis, the instantaneous SNR of the proposed TAS is characterized in terms of the statistical mean and moment-generating function (MGF). To investigate the performance of the proposed TAS approach, the approximated expression of error rate is derived based on the MGF method. Moreover, using asymptotic analysis, we show that the proposed TAS-STLC system achieves full spatial diversity of 2N, while the coding gain is affected by N, S, and the modulation order. As a special case, we also provide a mathematical analysis of the error rate of the conventional STLC system when N=S .

This paper proposes the application of a space-time line code (STLC) scheme to vehicular-to-roadside unit communication systems. For the STLC encoding, channel state information is estimated before the data transmission. Thus, owing to the channel variation, the discrepancy between the estimated and actual channels degrades the communication performance, particularly at the end of the data frame. Considering the time-varying channels, a frame length is designed to maximize the worst-case throughput of the frame end and numerically validated.

In this paper, a multiuser space-time line code (MU-STLC) scheme is newly designed that concurrently delivers multiple STLC signals to multiple users, and a preprocessing matrix for the MU-STLC is derived based on the minimum mean square error criterion. The novel MU-STLC method retains the conventional STLC receiver structure so that each user linearly combines the received signals without using the full channel state information to decode the STLC signals. With more transmit antennas than the number of users having two receive antennas, a transmit antenna selection (TAS) scheme is investigated in combination with the proposed MU-STLC method, and the detection signal-to-interferenceplus-noise ratio (SINR) is derived depending on a specific TAS pattern. The performance improvement obtained from the TAS is significant, yet finding the optimal TAS pattern is a combinatorial problem that requires prohibitively high computational complexity. To resolve this issue, a greedy TAS algorithm is also proposed that iteratively selects the transmit antenna maximizing the detection SINR in each greedy step. The numerical results verify the efficacy of the proposed MU-STLC system with the SINR-based greedy TAS algorithm in terms of the bit error rate performance and computational complexity. For example, comparing with a scheme that selects four antennas from eight antennas randomly to support four users, the proposed TAS scheme can reduce the required signal-to-noise ratio for achieving 10(-3) bit-error-rate by approximately 6 dB when quadrature phase-shift keying is employed. Furthermore, the proposed method can achieve comparable performance to the optimal antenna selection scheme with the reduced computational complexity by O(M-5) from O(MU+3), where M and U are the numbers of transmit antennas and selected antennas (or users), respectively.

We consider the problem of the efficient transmit antenna subset (TAS) selection for maximizing the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) of multiuser space-time line code (MU-STLC) systems. The exhaustive search for optimal TAS selection is impractical since the total number of transmit antennas increases. We propose two efficient TAS selection schemes based on the Woodbury formula. The first is to incrementally select NS active transmit antennas among the available NT transmit antennas. To reduce the complexity of the incremental selection scheme, the Woodbury formula is employed in the optimization process. The second is to perform the decremental strategy in which the Woodbury formula is also applied to develop the low-complexity TAS selection procedure for the MU-STLC systems. Simulation results show that the proposed incremental and decremental TAS selection algorithms offer better alternatives than the existing greedy TAS selection algorithm for the MU-STLC systems. Furthermore, in terms of bit error rate, the proposed minimum mean square error decremental TAS selection algorithm turns out to outperform the existing greedy algorithm with significantly lower computational complexity. Finally, we analyze the detection SINR penalty experienced from TAS selection and the analytical quantity is shown to be well matched with simulation results.
