This paper analyses the sparsity of SAR signal under the multi-antenna observation structure. Based on the sparsity of continuous scene spectrum and sparsity of target scene, a down-sampling method is proposed and side-looking 3D imaging of cross-track sparse array SAR is investigated. Imaging results on simulation and real data are given to verify the proposed method.

The aim of this study is to compare the performance of different multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) array topologies, intended to be used in ultra-wideband (UWB) near-field imaging applications, by using an analysis method that does not include the effects of image reconstruction algorithm. For this purpose, maximum projection method, previously proposed for the analysis of UWB arrays under far-field conditions, is utilized and modified to obtain two way beam patterns of UWB arrays operating in the near-field. The side lobe levels of these beam patterns are shown to be a clear performance criterion for evaluating the performance of sparse antenna arrays. Numerical simulation results are compared with previously reported results for some commonly used array configurations and a good agreement is observed.

The CS (Compressive Sensing) DOA (Direction of Arrival) methods usually require large number of sensors and subject to the manifold ambiguity brought by the sparse array. To solve this problem, an array interpolation based compressive sensing DOA method is proposed in this paper. Firstly, multiple strategies were applied to interpolate the sparse array with virtual elements to construct a virtual uniform array. Then apply the compressive sensing DOA method on this virtual array to obtain the DOA estimators. Comparing with the actual sparse array, the virtual one has more elements that de-singulars the manifold matrix, which implies satisfaction to the RIP (Restricted Isometry Property) condition. Simulation results demonstrate that our method can achieve DOAs for coherent signals with sparse array under small snapshots and low SNR.

In past years,growing efforts have been made to the rapid interpretation of magnetic field data acquired by a sparse synthetic or real magnetic sensor *** appealing requirement on such sparse array arranged within a specified survey region is that to make the number of sensor elements as small as possible,meanwhile without deteriorating imaging *** this end,we propose a novel methodology of arranging sensors in an optimal manner,exploring the concept of information capacity developed originally in the communication *** proposed scheme reduces mathematically the design of a sparse sensor array into solving a combinatorial optimization problem,which can be resolved efficiently using widely adopted Simultaneous Perturbation and Statistical Algorithm(SPSA).Three sets of numerical examples of designing optimal sensor array are provided to demonstrate the performance of proposed methodology.

In this paper, a design concept of sparse array is applied to total focusing imaging technique. During the process, the elements of a phased array are partially selected according to the theory of effective aperture, in order to reduce the amount of captured data and shorten the processing time of TFM imaging. Simulated imaging with Field II program and experimental verification on two standard phased array specimens are performed, based on three selected arrays which are sparsely as 1/2, 1/4 and 1/8. The results compared with the full array in terms of image quality and computing efficiency, show that the computing efficiency of TFM imaging can get a rise of 40 percent by adopting the sparse array design. Meanwhile, an approximate resolution can be achieved at the lowest array sparse rate of 1/4. Affected by the side-lobes of the ultrasonic beam, contrast of the image may suffer little loss.

Beamforming in sparse array often results in gratinglobes because of spatial undersample. In this paper, we investigate the concept of effective aperture to resolve gratinglobes. The central idea of effective aperture is to use transmit aperture with an appropriate element number to eliminate undersample in receive aperture. Quantitative analyze shows that the element number of transmit aperture is proportional to the inter-spacing of receive sparse array. Simulations demonstrate the design method can resolve gratinglobes effectively.

Compared to conventional uniformly spaced arrays, sparse arrays are effective and economical for many application scenarios. For example, sparse arrays can lower the peak sidelobe level (PSLL) or narrow the main lobe half-power 3dB beamwidth (3dB BW) of the array pattern with fewer elements. This can help to save on the number of antennas, and the supporting hardware costs, as well as improve the angular resolution which is useful for automotive radar systems and target identification applications. Furthermore, when fewer elements are employed, as in sparse arrays, the spacing between the elements can become larger, which can lead to a reduction in the mutual coupling. This paper will focus on implementing a hybrid approach to numerically determine an optimal 4x4 multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) array considering simulated annealing and particle swarm optimization (SA-PSO). Results will show that the technique can achieve lower PSLL or narrower 3dB BW with 8 fewer elements when compared to a corresponding 16 element uniform linear array (ULA). To the best knowledge of the authors, this is the first time that such comparisons and design techniques have been applied to sparse MIMO arrays whilst considering a hybrid SA-PSO synthesis algorithm.

An airship sparse array antenna radar system is investigated in this paper. The performance of the sparse array antenna is compared to the conventional dense array antenna. Ground moving target indication (GMTI) and real aperture radar (RAR) imaging mode are discussed. Some important parameters such as resolution and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of airship radar system are studied to prove the feasibility of the airship-mounted radar system.

A two-step adaptive beamforming approach in subarray is introduced in this paper. A main beam is formed by conventional digital beamforming algorithm. The space positions of M jammings are estimated and then M beams pointing at the directions of M jammings are formed. An adaptive processing of M+1 order is complemented with an adaptive algorithm. This algorithm has excellent performances in jamming cancellation, stability, and computational complexity.

This paper presents our study on the effect of perturbing variables and array size in optimizing a planar sparse array based on Danzer aperiodic tiling. A side lobe level below -12 dB has been achieved within a wide bandwidth from f(0) to 10 f(0) in a circular disk with radius of 5 lambda(0), while below -14.2 dB in a circular disk with radius of 10.0. It is also demonstrated that covariance matrix adaptation evolution strategy (CMA-ES) has outperformed other evolutionary algorithms, i.e. genetic algorithm (GA), particle swarm optimization (PSO).
