A Tight Lower Bound for the Symbol Error Performance of the Uplink sparse code multiple access

We derive a tight lower bound for symbol error rate (SER) performance of the sparse code multiple access (SCMA) uplink operated over Rayleigh fading channels. In particular, based on the working principle of message passing algorithm receiver and the special structure of the sparse binary matrix, which is used to control the collisions of SCMA system, the system can be simplified to a single user single input multiple output (SU-SIMO) system employing maximal ratio combining (MRC) reception. In this way, the average SER lower bound of SCMA is obtained by calculating the average SER of SU-SIMO system employing MRC reception. Our results show that the derived lower bound is not only an efficient means of analyzing the SER performance, but also is tight, especially in the high signal-to-noise ratio regime.

A Progressive codebook Optimization Scheme for sparse code multiple access in Downlink Channels

sparse code multiple access (SCMA) is a promising technique for enabling massive connectivity and high spectrum efficiency in future machine-type communication networks. However, its performance crucially depends on well-designed multi-dimensional codebooks. In this paper, we propose a novel progressive codebook optimization scheme that can achieve near-optimal performance over downlink fading channels. By examining the pair-wise error probability (PEP), we first derive the symbol error rate (SER) performance of the sparse codebook in downlink channels, which is considered as the design criterion for codebook optimization. Then, the benchmark constellation group at a single resource element is optimized with a sequential quadratic programming approach. Next, we propose a constellation group reconstruction process to assign the sub-constellations in each resource element (RE) progressively. For the current RE, the assignment of the sub-constellations is designed by minimizing the error performance of the product distance of the superimposed codewords in previous REs. The design process involves both permutation and labeling of the sub-constellations in the benchmark constellation group. Simulation results show that the proposed codebooks exhibit significant performance gains over state-of-the-art codebooks in the low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) region over various downlink fading channels.

The sparse code multiple access (SCMA) is a promising candidate for bandwidth-efficient next generation wireless communications, since it can support more users than the number of resource elements. On the same note, faster-than-Nyquist (FTN) signaling can also be used to improve the spectral efficiency. Hence in this paper, we consider a combined uplink FTN-SCMA system in which the data symbols corresponding to a user are further packed using FTN signaling. As a result, a higher spectral efficiency is achieved at the cost of introducing intentional inter-symbol interference (ISI). To perform joint channel estimation and detection, we design a low complexity iterative receiver based on the factor graph framework. In addition, to reduce the signaling overhead and transmission latency of our SCMA system, we intrinsically amalgamate it with grant-free scheme. Consequently, the active and inactive users should be distinguished. To address this problem, we extend the aforementioned receiver and develop a new algorithm for jointly estimating the channel state information, detecting the user activity and for performs data detection. In order to further reduce the complexity, an energy minimization based approximation is employed for restricting the user state to Gaussian. Finally, a hybrid message passing algorithm is conceived. Our Simulation results show that the FTN-SCMA system relying on the proposed receiver design has a higher throughput than conventional SCMA scheme at a negligible performance loss.

A novel deep neural network based approach for sparse code multiple access

sparse code multiple access (SCMA) has been one of the non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) schemes aiming to support high spectral efficiency and ubiquitous access requirements for 5G communication networks. Conventional SCMA approaches are confronting challenges in designing low-complexity high-accuracy decoding algorithm and constructing optimum codebooks. Fortunately, the recent spotlighted deep learning technologies are of significant potentials in solving many communication engineering problems. Inspired by this, we propose and train a deep neural network (DNN) called DL-SCMA to learn to decode SCMA modulated signals corrupted by additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN). An autoencoder called AE-SCMA is established and trained to generate optimal SCMA codewords and reconstruct original bits. Furthermore, by manipulating the mapping vectors, an autoencoder is able to generalize SCMA, thus a dense code multiple access (DCMA) scheme is proposed. Simulations show that the DNN SCMA decoder significantly outperforms the conventional message passing algorithm (MPA) in terms of bit error rate (BER), symbol error rate (SER) and computational complexity, and AE-SCMA also demonstrates better performances via constructing better SCMA codebooks. In this paper, we propose a deep learning-based sparse code multiple access multi-user multi-carrier differential chaos shift keying (DL-SCMA-MU-MC-DCSK) system, for the sake of improving the spectrum efficiency (SE) and bit-to-error (BER) performance. In the proposed system, the transmitted symbols of each user are mapped to complex codewords which are randomly generated from a complex normal distribution, and the codewords overlap on sub-carriers in a non-orthogonal way for the sparsity. Subsequently, the real and imaginary parts of the resultant complex codewords are modulated by the chaotic signal and its Hilbert-transform version, respectively. At the receiver, after correlation demodulation, a deep learning-based decorder consisting of deep neural network (DNN) is adopted to recover the transmitted data. We also compare the SE, energy efficiency (EE), and complexity with benchmark systems. Simulation results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed system in terms of bit-error-rate (BER) performance. Therefore, the proposed DL-SCMA-MU-MC-DCSK system represents a remarkable solution for low-power and cost-effective short-range wireless communication.

sparse code multiple access (SCMA) is a promising non-orthogonal multiple access technology for 5G radio access networks. It improves the connectivity and capacity. However, the two multiple access methods of SCMA: granted and grant-free cannot dynamically match the real-time demands since the resources allocated for the granted method and grant-free method are clearly separated with each other. This further deteriorates the system performance. This article proposes a semi-granted SCMA method, by enabling the granted demands and grantfree demands to share the same resources. Simulation results confirm that semi-granted SCMA matches the dynamically fluent demands and significantly improve the throughput of SCMA 5G system.

sparse code multiple access (SCMA) is a promising non-orthogonal air-interface technology for its ability to support massive connections. In this paper, we design the multiuser codebook and the advanced decoding from the perspective of the theoretical capacity and the system feasibility. First, different from the lattice-based constellation in point-to-point channels, we propose a novel codebook for maximizing the constellation constrained capacity. We optimize a series of 1-D superimposed constellations to construct multi-dimensional codewords. An effective dimensional permutation switching algorithm is proposed to further obtain the capacity gain. Consequently, it shows that the performance of the proposed codebook approaches the Shannon limit and achieves significant gains over the other existing ones. Furthermore, we provide a symbol-based extrinsic information transfer tool to analyze the convergence of SCMA iterative detection, where the complex codewords are considered in modeling the a priori probabilities instead of assuming the binary inputs in previous literature. Finally, to approach the capacity, we develop a low-density parity-check code-based SCMA receiver. Most importantly, by utilizing the EXIT charts, we propose an iterative joint detection and decoding scheme with only partial inner iterations, which exhibits significant performance gain over the traditional one with separate detection and decoding.

Nowadays the development of internet of things (IoT) has become the next major growth point of wireless communication. And narrow band has become a new trend in the development of IoT. Achieving massive connectivity and ever-increasing network capacity has become an important subject of our research. We find that sparse code multiple access (SCMA), a type of non-orthogonal multiple access, is supposed to meet these needs, but it can hardly apply to NB-IoT because narrow band does not have the ability of spread spectrum. On this basis, we introduce SCMA into time domain, named T-SCMA, for NB-IoT. By multiplexing SCMA in the time domain and defining a MAC frame structure, we can significantly improve both connectivity and network capacity, ultimately obtain a much higher throughput property gain over time division multiple address (TDMA).

In grant-free sparse code multiple access (SCMA) systems, SCMA codebooks (CBs) are used for efficient grant-free random access. However, CB collisions can occur when multiple active users select the same CB, degrading the performance of multi-user detection (MUD) at the base station (BS). The existing methods modify the factor graph on the message-passing algorithm (MPA) for each CB collision scenario, resulting in high computational complexity. In this paper, we aim to confirm that even in the presence of CB collisions, MUD performance can be ensured through a deep learning (DL)-based receiver and explore its limitations. We propose a single DL architecture for collision-aware MUD (CA-MUD) that can tolerate CB collisions, without resorting to the distinct MUD processes associated with individual collision scenarios. To facilitate the generation of training data for CA-MUD that comprehensively represents the grant-free SCMA scenario, we introduce a transceiver model that regulates the number of active CBs and sets the maximum tolerable CB collisions. Simulation results demonstrate that our proposed approach allows a single CA-MUD network to handle various CB collision scenarios, including 2-fold CB collision subject to a limited number of active users.

The underground coal mining communication system puts forward higher communication requirements owing to the harsh environment and multiple-user communications in the practical scenario. For improving communication quality such as bit error rate (BER) in the coal mining system, we use the spatial modulation (SM) and sparse code multiple access (SCMA) jointly in the uplink transmission. In this multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system, conformal microstrip patch arrays are adopted. By exploiting the message passing algorithm to detect the sparse symbols, the base station is capable of serving multiple users simultaneously and hence solves the system overload problem. Taking the blockages and tunnel geometry into account, we investigate the BER pertaining to distinct distances when different fading distributions are involved. Finally, numerical results are given to verify the efficiency of this scheme.
