Loss or gain: A spatial regression analysis of switching land conversions between agriculture and natural land

This article comprehensively investigates the gains and losses between agriculture and natural land in the case of the Edmonton-Calgary Corridor, Canada. Using remote sensing data from 2000 to 2012, factors that drive land-use conversions, including environmental and socio-economic characteristics, are explored. This study also adopts spatial techniques to allow for neighborhood effects from land-use activities in neighboring areas. Key findings include the following: higher land suitability hinders the process of agricultural land abandonment;road density prohibits agricultural land conversion to natural land;the implementation of conservation sites protects land in its natural status;and land-use activities have strong neighborhood effects on nearby regions. Incorporating spatial interactions can generate less biased empirical results and provide more accurate policy recommendations. In addition, an investigation of bi-directional land-use transitions helps to better understand the associated gains and losses between agriculture and natural land and offers further insights into the effectiveness of preservation programs that aim to protect wild space and maintain ecological balance. This paper applied an integrated spatial regression model to explore the associations between ten environmental variables and the highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI). A subtype H5N1 cases in wild birds and poultry in China, and to predict the spatial distribution of HPAI H5N1 relative risk. Here a generalized linear mixed model (GLMM) incorporated with a variogram model through its random effects item, used as the spatial regression model. Four environmental variables were found to have significant effects, including annual mean temperature, poultry density, distance to lakes and wetlands, and distance to bird migration routes. The Root Mean Square Error of arbitrary 15 sample data was 11.56. Further, the high predicted relative risk areas of HPAI H5N1 were mainly in the Northwest, Middle, Southwest and Southeast part of China. With its simple structure and good prediction ability, this spatial regression model was very promising for predicting the risk of other disease.

Various environmental and socioeconomic issues have been attributed to land-use changes, and therefore, the underlying mechanisms merit investigation and quantification. This study assesses a comprehensive series of land-use conversions that were implemented over a recent 12-year period in the province of Alberta, Canada, where rapid economic and population growth has occurred. spatial autocorrelation models are applied to identify the comprehensive effects of environmental and socioeconomic factors in each conversion case. The empirical results show that the impacts of key environmental and socioeconomic factors varied in intensity depending on the type of land-use conversion involved. Overall, land suitability for agricultural uses, road density, elevation, and population growth were found to be significant predictors of land-use changes. High land suitability, low elevation, and moderate road density were associated with land conversion for agricultural purposes.

The Promoting Effect of Financial Development on Economic Growth: Evidence from China

We study the promoting effects of financial development on economic growth in China. We investigate the effects of developments in the banking, securities, and insurance sectors on the outputs of China's primary, secondary, and tertiary industries. Since China's provincial economic growth shows significant spatial dependence, we construct cross-sectional spatial regression models to study effects year by year, and panel spatial regression models to study overall effects. Empirical results show that the banking and insurance sectors provide significant promoting effects on economic growth;the promoting effect of the securities sector is uncertain.

''spatial statistics" is an academic field that deals with the statistical analysis of spatial data, and has been applied to econometrics and various other policy fields. These methods are easily applied by hematologists and oncologists using better and much less expensive software. To encourage physicians to use these methods, this review introduces the methods and demonstrates the analyses using R and FleXScan, which can be freely downloaded from the website, with sample data. It is demonstrated that spatial analysis can be used by physicians to analyze hematological diseases. In addition, applying the technique presented to the investigation of patient prognoses may enable generation of data that are also useful for solving health policy related problems, such as the optimal distribution of medical resources.

The objective of this paper was to estimate turbidity in the Curuai floodplain during the high water level period. spatial regression models were developed by using fraction images derived from a linear spectral mixture model applied to a Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer/Terra image and turbidity in situ data. As the turbidity in situ data showed spatial autocorrelation. they were divided into four spatial regimes (clusters). Thus, a spatial regression model was developed for each spatial regime. Through the Akaike information criterion, it was verified which spatial regime showed the best fit in the spatial regression model. The best fit was presented by the spatial regime 4 (R-2 = 0.80, p < 0.05). Then. the spatial regression model developed for the spatial regime 4 was applied to all floodplain lakes. The spatial regression models show potential for assessing the water turbidity in aquatic systems by considering a spatial dependence between samples.

Existing quantitative migration studies are mainly at the inter-region or inter-province level for lacking of detailed geo-referenced migration ***,few of them integrate explorative spatial data analysis and spatial regression model into migration *** on aggregated registered floating population data from 2005 to 2008,the phenomena that population floating to Yiwu City in Zhejiang Province is analyzed at the provincial and county *** spatial layout of Yiwu's pull forces is proved as a V-shaped pattern excluding Sichuan Province based on map visualization *** the migration ratio in 2007 as an explanatory variable,two models are compared using ordinary least square,spatial error model and spatial lag model methods for county-level data in Jiangxi and Anhui *** model with migration stock provides an improved fitting over the model without migration stock according to the model fitting *** floating population flocking into Yiwu City from Jiangxi is determined mostly by migration stock while the determinant factors are migration stock and distance to Yiwu City for *** distance-decay effect is true for migration flow from Anhui to Yiwu City while the distance rule is not confirmed in Jiangxi with the best fitting *** correlation between per capita net income of rural labor forces and migration ratio is not significant in Jiangxi and significant but at the 0.1 level only in *** analysis shows that the distance,income and man-land ratio are important factors to explain population floating at earlier ***,as the dynamic population floating process evolves,the determinant factor would be migration stock.

The value of retail rents with regression models: a case study of Shanghai

Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to estimate the determinants of the retail space rent in Shanghai. Design/methodology/approach - Hedonic model and spatial regression models are used in the paper. The problem of spatial autocorrelation is tested by Moran's I statistics, and the root mean square error (RMSE) test is performed to find out the best model. Findings - The significant explaining variables are the age, the area of retail space, the distance to the Jing An CBD centre, the type of the retail and the district of the property. A new classification of district in retail research context is suggested in this paper, and it is proved to be better than the districts set up by government to explain the retail rent variation. Originality/value - This paper presents the first empirical study about the retail rental market in Shanghai. The research helps retail property investors and retail tenants deepen their understanding of the retail market in Shanghai. spatial econometrics techniques are first introduced into the empirical retail rent research to produce a more precise estimation.
