The relationship of spatial visualization ability and number representation: evidence from multiple tasks

It is well established in the literature that the relation of spatial ability and the number representation, but the intrinsic relation of spatial visualization ability and number representation are not well understood. In the Current study, Chinese Preschool children (N = 200;107 girls;Mage = 5.47years, SD = 0.67) completed two kinds of spatial visualization tasks and six kinds of number representation tasks. The results showed that spatial visualization ability was positively correlated with number representation for 5 years-old Children. Furthermore, spatial visualization ability can positively predicted number representation. These findings are consistent with the view that spatial visualization is recognized for its potential to enhance numerical skills, encompassing competencies associated with fundamental number. Therefore, developing children's spatial visualization ability may be an effective way to enhance their number representation skills. This has important implications for early education and intervention strategies.

spatial visualization, the ability to mentally rotate three-dimensional (3D) images, plays a significant role in anatomy education. This study examines the impact of technical drawing exercises on the improvement of spatial visualization and anatomy education in a Neuroscience course. First-year medical students (n = 84) were randomly allocated into a control group (n = 41) or art-training group (n = 43). Variables including self-reported artistic drawing ability, previous technical drawing experience, or previous anatomy laboratory exposure were gathered. Participants who self-identified as artistic individuals were equally distributed between the two groups. Students in the art-training group attended four 1-hour sessions to solve technical drawing worksheets. All participants completed two Mental Rotations Tests (MRT), which were used to assess spatial visualization. Data were also collected from two neuroscience written examinations and an anatomical "tag test" practical examination. Participants in the art-training and control groups improved on the MRT. The mean of written examination two was significantly higher (P = 0.007) in the art-training group (12.95) than the control group (11.48), and higher (P = 0.027) in those without technical drawing experience (12.44) than those with (11.00). The mean of the anatomical practical was significantly higher (P = 0.010) in those without artistic ability (46.24) than those with (42.00). These results suggest that completing technical drawing worksheets may aid in solving anatomy-based written examination questions on complex brain regions, but further research is needed to determine its implication on anatomy practical scores. These results propose a simple method of improving spatial visualization in anatomy education.

With the exposure of the mechanical engineering undergraduate students to the concepts of spatial visualization, this work assesses the effect of spatial visualization skills on the visual thinking abilities. Influence of spatial visualization on visual thinking and cognitive abilities like reasoning, abstract thinking, planning, comprehension of complex ideas, quick learning and learning from experience, is analysed through FMEA (failure modes and effects analysis). The RPNs (risk-priority-numbers) have been calculated and priority is set for proposing the corrective actions. Further to this, case studies in tool design have been picked for exhibition of spatial visualization skill set. Influence of tool design on visual thinking capability of the students is understood through various case-studies. Thus, tool, die and mold design ideation is used as a platform for the proposing improvements in visual thinking and cognitive abilities among mechanical engineering students.

The results of several studies suggest that spatial ability can be improved through direct training with tasks similar to those integrated in the tests used to measure the ability. However, there is a greater interest in analyzing the effectiveness of indirect training such as games or of learning subjects that involve spatial processes to a certain extent. Thus, the objective of the present study was to analyze whether the indirect training in Technical Drawing improved the spatial visualization ability of Architecture students. For this purpose, a group of students enrolled in Fundamentals of Architecture were administered two tests, a spatial visualization task and an Abstract Reasoning task, at the beginning and the end of a semester, after having received training through the subjects "Technical Drawing I: Geometry and Perception" and "Projects I." The results of this group were compared with those of a control group of students enrolled in a Mathematics degree, who were also pre-post evaluated but had not received the training in Technical Drawing. The study showed a significant pre-post improvement in both, visualization and reasoning. However, this improvement occurred in both groups, thereby concluding that this improvement was not due to indirect training. Furthermore, no significant differences were found between men and women in any of the groups or conditions. These results clarify those of an earlier study where improvement in visualization after training in Technical Drawing was found but did not include a comparison with a control condition. The control condition has proved to be important in order to consider the limitations of the effect of Technical Drawing on said improvement.

Displaying the sensor limitation of automated vehicles is crucial to traffic safety and trust in automation. However, the current representation of system uncertainty is quite general with symbols or scales consisting of uncertainty levels, which is problematic in critical situations where drivers need to know the specific problem of the sensors. An interface that visualizes the radar sensor information spatially considering the surroundings is proposed, which aims to provide a better mental representation of the situation and support drivers' decisions. It is evaluated against two reference interfaces with either no or general representation of the sensor information. After seeing different interfaces in various scenarios of overtaking obstacles, participants selected one of the following options: "stop", "circuit" or "take over the control". The results show that although the interface showing no sensor information has the shortest reaction time, the proposed interface has changed drivers' decisions from "circuit" to "take over the control" the most.

This paper presents a dynamic heart model based on a parallelized space-time adaptive mesh refinement algorithm (AMRA). The spatial and temporal simulation method of the anisotropic excitable media has to achieve great performance in distributed processing environment. The accuracy and efficiency of the algorithm was tested for anisotropic and inhomogeneous 3D domains using ten Tusscher's and Nygen's cardiac cell models. During propagation of depolarization wave, the kinetic, compositional and rotational anisotrophy is included in the tissue, organ and torso model. The generated inverse ECC with conventional and parallelized algorithm has the same quality, but a speedup of factor 200 can be reached using AMRA modeling and single instruction multiple data (SIMD) programming of the video cards. These results suggest that a powerful personal computer will be able to perform a one-second long simulation of the spatial electrical dynamics of the heart in approximately five minutes.

spatial visualization is critical in engineering and many other STEM fields. Poor spatial abilities can affect student success in college courses and continue to struggle with tasks in the workforce. spatial ability, verbal-logical reasoning, and mathematics performance are correlated with each other. Thus, improving spatial ability can improve other areas as well. However, although educators and researchers agree about an increasing need for visualization skills, few educational opportunities existed in secondary schools where spatial reasoning and three-dimensional (3D) printing are combined. Informal learning environments such as summer STEM camps can offer students opportunities to improve spatial skills through a variety of activities. Our research is based on behaviorist and constructivist theories. Both theories recognize the central role of social factors in child development. Constructivist education depends on mutual respect to promote autonomy and reasoning. Although children can discover things, child development consists in inventing new logical, mathematical knowledge. Behaviorist educators guide children's learning through 'demonstration, leading questions, and by introducing the initial elements of a task's solution.' In addition, collaborative learning through social negotiation leads to the co-construction of knowledge. During these summer camps, students worked collaboratively and used social negotiations to construct new knowledge. During a one-week summer camp, students participated in multiple mini -classes centered on spatial relationships. A pre-camp survey was used to assess students' prior work with activities involving spatial skills. The purpose of the study was to determine whether and which of these activities could be correlated with spatial visualization and drawing skills as determined through a spatial drawing activity. We used the visualization and Drawing Assessment 2 to collect data related to drawing 3D objects accurately. Final

Using an augmented reality-based training system to promote spatial visualization ability for the elderly

The physical condition and cognitive ability of older adults tends to decline. This study focused on the development of an augmented reality (AR)-based rehabilitation training system to improve the spatial visualization and mental rotation abilities of elderly people. Using one's imagination to manipulate objects is common in everyday life. However, training tasks for the elderly are still presented in two-dimension, which research indicates generates a cognitive load that reduces the participants' interest and diminishes the effects of training. AR can effectively reduce cognitive load, improve one's sense of spatial direction, and increase participants' interest in training. Therefore, this study used AR technology, combined with a tangible user interface as a manual controller, to allow participants to directly manipulate a virtual three-dimensional model that used a cube to conduct mental rotation tasks (MRT) for the elderly to improve their mental rotation ability. After 6 weeks of intervention, we used an ABA (reversal) design and paired-sample t tests in SPSS to compare the learning effects on the experimental group's pre- and posttests. The participants' error rates significantly declined and their reaction times significantly improved during the MRT test.

3D simulation technology as an effective instructional tool for enhancing spatial visualization skills in apparel design

The purpose of this study is to explore the effectiveness of 3D simulation technology for enhancing spatial visualization skills in apparel design education and further to suggest an innovative teaching approach using the technology. Apparel design majors in an introductory patternmaking course, at a large Midwestern University in the United States, participated in this study. Three different teaching methods (lecture, 3D simulation instruments, and paper patternmaking) were employed in consecutive instructional phases, within a single day. A short questionnaire devised to assess students' visualization abilities and overall evaluation on the three different teaching methods was administered to the students after each of the three phases. Overall, students' abilities to visualize 2D patterns onto a human body were improved by all three teaching methods. The 3D simulation instruments anchored positive effects of training on spatial visualization abilities between lecture and paper patternmaking practices. The results affirm that 3D simulation technology has positive potential as an efficient instructional tool for improving students' visualization skills in apparel design.

spatial ability has been recognized as a significant human skill involving the retrieval, retention, and transformation of visual information in a special context. The enhancement of the spatial ability and the effective method of training are rarely considered as an area of study in the education field. This study focuses on the enhancement of spatial visualization and mental rotation, which are two major components of spatial ability, through the practice of puzzle games. This study adopts an experimental approach to test whether the game is effective in facilitating student's development of spatial visualization and mental rotation. 79 primary school students in Taiwan are included to be volunteer participants. Two instruments are adopted to measure the participants' performance of spatial visualization and mental rotation. The research findings show that the designed puzzle games effectively improve the participants' abilities in spatial visualization and mental rotation and that the traditional puzzle games can only enhance participants' mental rotation. This study suggests that the theory-based design of multimedia games can offer a more effective learning environment for developing and improving cognitive skills. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd.
