Grid quorum-based spatial coverage in mobile wireless sensor networks using nature-inspired firefly algorithm

Optimization and design of mobile wireless sensor networks (MWSNs) must assure adequate spatial coverage of the site. The spatial coverage optimization aims to enrich discoverability of MWSN by specifying mobile sensors geographical locations in order to maximize their coverage. In this paper, an enhanced metaheuristic algorithm called "firefly algorithm with crossover and detection phases" is introduced for optimizing the area coverage percentage of MWSN. The proposed algorithm is tested on many datasets with different criterions and compared with other algorithms including differential evolution, whale optimization algorithm, and flower pollination algorithm. The experimental results are analysed with one-way ANOVA test. In addition, the proposed algorithm is compared with particle swarm optimization, and the results are analysed with Wilcoxon signed-rank test. The overall analysis results prove the prosperity and efficient exploration of the proposed algorithm.

Accuracy and impact of spatial aids based upon satellite enumeration to improve indoor residual spraying spatial coverage

Background: Indoor residual spraying (IRS) is a key tool in the fight to control, eliminate and ultimately eradicate malaria. IRS protection is based on a communal effect such that an individual's protection primarily relies on the community-level coverage of IRS with limited protection being provided by household-level coverage. To ensure a communal effect is achieved through IRS, achieving high and uniform community-level coverage should be the ultimate priority of an IRS campaign. Ensuring high community-level coverage of IRS in malaria-endemic areas is challenging given the lack of information available about both the location and number of households needing IRS in any given area. A process termed 'mSpray' has been developed and implemented and involves use of satellite imagery for enumeration for planning IRS and a mobile application to guide IRS implementation. This study assessed (1) the accuracy of the satellite enumeration and (2) how various degrees of spatial aid provided through the mSpray process affected community-level IRS coverage during the 2015 spray campaign in Zambia. Methods: A 2-stage sampling process was applied to assess accuracy of satellite enumeration to determine number and location of sprayable structures. Results indicated an overall sensitivity of 94% for satellite enumeration compared to finding structures on the ground. Results: After adjusting for structure size, roof, and wall type, households in Nchelenge District where all types of satellite-based spatial aids (paper-based maps plus use of the mobile mSpray application) were used were more likely to have received IRS than Kasama district where maps used were not based on satellite enumeration. The probability of a household being sprayed in Nchelenge district where tablet-based maps were used, did not differ statistically from that of a household in Samfya District, where detailed paper-based spatial aids based on satellite enumeration were provided. A hydrological sensor network is a comprehensive monitoring system which consists of varieties of hydrological stations. The spatial optimization of the deployment of these gauging stations is critical for obtaining hydrological information effectively, given that sensing resources are often limited. In this paper, we consider the hydrological station siting problem as a continuous location problem and propose a general method for siting hydrological stations in space to maximize the total area for monitoring. Considering the coverage characteristics of different stations, the target watershed area is discretized into a series of area-based or line-based demand objects with specific weights. The effective coverage range of a station is determined based on the minimum density required and terrain conditions. Two types of finite dominant sets (FDS) are designed to identify the critical potential locations for line-coverage and area-coverage stations. By formulating a modified maximal covering location problem (MCLP) model with distance constraints which follow the general regulations for hydrological sensor network design, the siting problem can be solved using the MCLP-based model and FDS. The precipitation stations and streamflow stations in the lower reach of the Jinsha River Basin are selected as examples to test the performance of the proposed optimal siting method. Results show that the model solution achieves better coverage than that of the real-world deployment. The applicability of the proposed method, criteria for candidate site selection, and impacts of different weighting schemes are also discussed.

Most messages posted in Twitter usually discuss an ongoing event, triggering a series of tweets that together may constitute a trending topic (e.g., #election2012, #jesuischarlie, #oscars2016). Sometimes, such a topic may be trending only locally, assuming that related posts have a geographical reference, either directly geotagging them with exact coordinates or indirectly by mentioning a well-known landmark (e.g., #bataclan). In this paper, we study how trending topics evolve both in space and time, by monitoring the Twitter stream and detecting online the varying spatial coverage of related geotagged posts across time. Observing the evolving spatial coverage of such posts may reveal the intensity of a phenomenon and its impact on local communities, and can further assist in improving user awareness on facts and situations with strong local footprint. We propose a technique that can maintain trending topics and readily recognize their locality by subdividing the area of interest into elementary cells. Thus, instead of costly spatial clustering of incoming messages by topic, we can approximately, but almost instantly, identify such areas of coverage as groups of contiguous cells, as well as their mutability with time. We conducted a comprehensive empirical study to evaluate the performance of the proposed methodology, as well as the quality of detected areas of coverage. Results confirm that our technique can efficiently cope with scalable volumes of messages, offering incremental response in real-time regarding coverage updates for trending topics.

Sensor coverage is a well established problem in sensor networks. Most of the work is focused on optimizing coverage in stationary networks or by controlling the movement of mobile nodes (e.g. robots) in order to maximize their coverage. In participatory sensor networks, we are faced with non-controllable mobility. Humans move freely and there is no central nor distributed algorithm that optimizes coverage. There is no work in literature yet that explores coverage in the context of non-controllable mobility. To this end, we report results of a study applying an adapted greedy coverage algorithm onto three different data sets. Given these datasets, we report results studying the effect of different mobility characteristics on the spatial and temporal coverage. Our results show that high coverage can be achieved by a relatively small subset of nodes. Also, given a real-world participatory sensing system, turn-around times are relevant for continuous temporal coverage.

While high-speed rail networks involve significant public expenditure in the name of the whole nation, scholars have paid little attention to the share of the population served by this modern transport mode. Studies have favoured perspectives that either neglect population volumes or include them but cannot offer a worldwide assessment. Public authorities favour passionate statements about network length and cruising speed but at the same time they neglect the populations served. In contrast, this paper offers a worldwide comparison of populations served by high-speed rail services in 15 countries. We found the range is wide (7%-94%) and depends on several factors beyond network length, including network design, urbanisation patterns, technical characteristics and domestic vs. international purposes.

The effect of three different volumes of indoor greenery on employee well-being

PurposeThis study aims to explore the effect of different volumes of indoor greenery on perceived stress, stress, perceived productivity, productivity and perceived workplace satisfaction to support employees' well-being. Design/methodology/approachIn a cross-over experimental design, a homogeneous group of students was randomised in different orders where each participant experienced the same three conditions. Different volumes of indoor greenery were added to the experiment room (0%, 0.5% and 8%). With a Fitbit, sudoku and a questionnaire, the five variables were measured. FindingsFindings show that perceived stress and heart rate (physical stress) are lower in the 8% condition. Productivity scores did not improve significantly, however perceived productivity did in the 8% condition. Positive trends could be seen for the variables in the 0.5% condition. Furthermore, 2/3 of the participants preferred the 8% condition, whereas the other 1/3 preferred the 0.5% condition. Overall, 1/3 of the participants mentioned that their optimal volume of greenery would be more than 0.5% but less than 8%. This research shows that the implementation of 8% indoor greenery contributes to a happier and more relaxing office place where employees get the feeling of being less stressed and more productive. Research limitations/implicationsThis research found that the largest volume of plants used (8%) has the most positive effect on the variables studied in this research. This study shows that participants' heart rate, and therefore physical stress, became lower in the 8% condition. In this 8% condition, participants experienced less stress and perceived themselves to be more productive. Besides, 2/3 of the participants preferred being in the 8% condition, suggesting that after adding this volume of indoor greenery employees will be more satisfied with their workplace. Comparative analysis of the spatiotemporal patterns and trends of three types of summer heatwaves in China (1981-2020) using a biometeorological index

Under global warming, heatwaves (HWs) are exerting increasing impacts on human life. In order to explore the thermal sensation of HWs under the combined influence of air temperature, humidity, radiation and wind speed, this study utilized the hourly Universal Thermal Climate Index (UTCI) data from the ECMWF Reanalysis v5 (ERA5) to define daytime, night-time and compound HWs, and then comparatively analysed their occurrences in China during 1981-2020. Results revealed that daytime HWs affect the majority of regions in China with the exception of the Tibetan Plateau, while both night-time and compound HWs mainly strike the Yangtze River Basin and the Guangdong-Guangxi region in southeastern China. Additionally, it is noteworthy that a substantial portion of regions experiencing night-time HWs also encounter compound HWs. The frequency and intensity of all three types of HWs show increasing trends generally in regions where HWs occur. The spatial coverage of HWs grows at rates of 8.05%/10a, 2.11%/10a and 1.62%/10a for the daytime, night-time and compound types, respectively. For each summer month, the spatial coverage of daytime HWs notably surpasses that of night-time and compound HWs. Further classifying HWs with intensity, it is found that the spatial coverage of both moderate and severe HW events exhibits discernible rising trends across all three types of HWs. Furthermore, regions with higher HW frequencies are more likely to experience severe HWs as well as record-breaking ones. Additionally, the spatial coverage of daytime, night-time and compound record-breaking HWs is expanding. The spatial coverage of HWs grows at rates of 8.05%/10a, 2.11%/10a and 1.62%/10a for the daytime, night-time and compound types, respectively. In recent years, with the rapid development of mobile Internet and smart sensor technology, mobile crowdsensing (MCS) computing model has attracted wide concern in academia, industry and business circles. MCS utilizes the sensing and computing capabilities of smart devices carried by workers to cooperate through the mobile Internet to fulfill complex tasks. Worker recruitment is a core and common research problem in MCS, which is a combinatorial optimization problem that considers tasks, workers additionally other factors to satisfy various optimization objectives and constraints. The existing methods are not suitable for large-scale and real-time sensing tasks. Thus, this paper proposes a multi-layers worker recruitment framework based on edge-cloud collaboration. At the cloud computing layer, the whole sensing area is partitioned into small grids according to task position. At the edge computing layer, real-time data processing and aggregation are performed and then a mathematical model is constructed to make decision on worker recruitment by considering a variety of factors from the perspective of workers. Experimental results on real data prove that, compared with existing methods, our method can achieve good performance in terms of spatial coverage and running time under task cost and time constraint.

Modelling the management of an invasive species at landscape scale: are oral contraceptives the missing ingredient for success?

ContextInvasive non-native species are on the rise worldwide, exacerbating already significant environmental and economic impacts. Concurrently, public attitudes towards methods of controlling these species are changing, with greater demand for non-lethal solutions. This has fostered research into developing new, effective technologies and strategies for wildlife *** the basis of a case study focusing on the eastern grey squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis) in the UK, this study aimed to understand the potential for population management, using either live trapping or oral contraception. First, assuming completely coordinated landscape-scale control, and then, coordinated control only on parts of the landscape, accounting for the potential that landowners' attitudes towards alternative methods may differ and reflect those of the wider *** used an existing spatially explicit individual-based modelling approach applying various parameterisations to define management. We varied the density of traps or hoppers delivering contraceptives, the duration of deployment, contraceptive efficacy, initial population size, and the probability of landowner participation. The latter was based on a previous public survey, suggesting that 40% of the respondents were open to management using trapping and 64% to using *** resultsWith complete coordinated control, trapping was generally faster and more cost-effective than was contraception.
