Our work is concerned with the modeling and analysis of safety-critical systems of systems (SoS). They emerge from the arrangement of independent and useful physical systems integrated into a larger system that delivers unique capabilities such as multi-Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) or robotic swarms. Successful collaboration and interaction between component systems in (increasingly) reduced spaces is contingent to precise and accurate perception, interpretation and management of various spatial representations of self and teaming systems. This is needed for effective decision making (the right action at the right time, and in the right place) for keeping safety-critical SoS safe. Thus, we develop and propose space-based interaction functions to model and evaluate the spatial properties and interactions of systems (as agents) within a safety-critical SoS. These mathematical spatial functions define, express and provide means to evaluate physical and communication interactions between pairs of agents and between an agent and all the other agents in the SoS. They are shown to be valuable mechanisms for rigorous, systematic, domain independent analysis of safety critical SoS and can be implemented by systems of any size or shape. Architecture for the implementation of the functions is described for support of models and simulations of safety-critical SoS across a wide variety of applications including multi-UAS package delivery systems.

In urban planning, a numerical and spatially based approach is expected to drive to the "best" choice. In this work a GIS-based procedure is proposed to model territorial dynamics by comparing maps of two different periods (1830 and 2000). The study area is located in the urban fringe of Torino (NW Italy) that suffered from important changes especially in the last 60 years. A workflow was defined and applied, based on a multi-criteria approach implemented by GIS. With reference to existing maps, strength and direction of forces, opposing urban to rural/semi-natural surroundings, were mapped and described operating through the following scheme: a) vectorization and qualification of both impacted (rural) and impacting (urban) landscape elements;b) implementation of spatially dependent functions representing strength and direction of urban pushes against rural;c) qualification of rural areas majorly exposed to urban growth. Accordingly, some maps, useful to read the playing urban growth dynamics, were generated and some applications proposed. Nevertheless some limitations still persist: the proposed methodology is based on simplified hypotheses, mainly related to the definition of spatial indices that somehow depend on the type of information that available maps contain. A second limitation is related to the persistence of a great component of subjectivity during the extraction of the starting information from the available maps and weights assignation.

spatial statistics in ecological analysis: from indices to functions

This paper presents a review of the most common methods in ecological studies aimed at spatial analysis of population structures (horizontal and vertical), based on point process statistics. Methods based on simple spatially explicit indices as well as more sophisticated methods relying on functions are described in a comprehensible manner. Simple indices revealing the information on spatial structure at the scale of the nearest neighbor can be easily implemented in practical forestry. On the other hand, spatial functions, based on much more detailed data, describe the spatial structure in terms of the spatial relationships between the natural processes and population structures and because of this complexity they are rarely used in forest practice. Including both methods in a single paper is also valuable from the potential reader's point of view saving their time for searching and choosing the appropriate method to make their spatial analysis. This paper can also serve as an initial guide for young researchers or those who are going to start their studies on spatial aspects of bio-systems. Avoiding the statistical and mathematical details makes this paper understandable for readers who are not statisticians or mathematicians Readers will find many references related to each method described here, allowing them to find solutions to different problems observed in practice. This paper ends with a list of the most common specific software packages available to support spatial analysis.

This work focuses on the integration of the spatial analyses for semantic reasoning in order to compute new axioms of an existing OWL ontology. To make it concrete, we have defined spatial Built-ins, an extension of existing Built-ins of the SWRL rule language. It permits to run deductive rules with the help of a translation rule engine. Thus, the spatial SWRL rules are translated to standard SWRL rules. Once the spatial functions of the spatial SWRL rules are computed with the help of a spatial database system, the resulting translated rules are computed with a reasoning engine such as Racer, Jess or Pellet.

Framy - visualising geographic data on mobile interfaces

When using a mobile device for navigating and querying a map, some visualisation and usability problems may arise due to small screens and limited interaction modes allowed by such devices. Recently, researchers have devoted their efforts to overcome these issues by introducing innovative approaches for developing advanced interfaces, capable of providing users with analytical information as well as visual summary of data. In this article, we propose a new visualisation technique, named Framy, which exploits a novel interaction metaphor for picture frames to provide hints about off-screen objects. It was conceived to cover a wider range of spatial data visualisation tasks, which may simultaneously involve different geographic layers. The technique has been embedded inside a mobile GIS application, MapGIS, designed to perform typical GIS operations and queries on mobile devices. A usability study has been performed in order to verify the benefits in efficacy, efficiency and subjective satisfaction coming from the adoption of Framy within the system.

The widespread use of mobile devices in basic map navigation tasks has recently attracted researchers on usability problems arising from the reduced visualization area and the limited interaction modes allowed by small keypads. In this paper we analyse the most common approaches suggested in the literature and propose a new visualization technique, named FRAMY, which is based on one of them and exploits a novel interaction metaphor for picture frames to provide hints about off-screen objects. It was conceived to cover a wider range of spatial data visualization tasks, which may simultaneously involve different geographic layers.

Buried faults have drawn more and more attention of geologists by their important geological significance in structural geology and in engineering geology. But how to identify their existence and evaluate their strikes and dips and then proceed to establish the metallogenic model and outline the prospective regions in a study area have become an urgent problem. Gravity data and magnetic data carry information about basement tectonics, and remotely sensed data can be used to extract faults on the ground surface. The paper demonstrates a new multi-data integration method using gravity data, aerial magnetic data and remotely sensed data to solve the problem mentioned above in ARC/INFO, a world famous geographic information system developed by the Environmental Systems Research Institute of United States. The steps are as following: (1) data preparation, (2) correlative analysis between two of the above data types, (3) filtering processing with windows of different size in order to extract the existence of buried faults of different depths using the results of step (2), (4) use the spatial and statistical functions of ARC/INFO to identify the counterparts of a given buried fault in a different deep layer and evaluate its strike and dip values roughly.

Procedures are developed in order to obtain optimal estimates of linear functionals for a wide class of nonstationary spatial functions. These procedures rely on well-established constrained minimum-norm criteria, and are applicable to multidimensional phenomena which are characterized by the so-called hypothesis of inherentity. The latter requires elimination of the polynomial, trend-related components of the spatial function leading to stationary quantities, and also it generates some interesting mathematics within the context of modelling and optimization in several dimensions. The arguments are illustrated using various examples, and a case study computed in detail.
