An inverse technique by reflection measurement in spatial domain is proposed instead of frequency domain. A steepest descent algorithm is used for minimizing performance functions to obtain fast convergence. Comparison results of inverse technique in spatial domain provides good agreement to those obtained from frequency domain ones that shows the possibility to design a low cost dielectric-property determination system.

This paper presents a new method for solving the output tracking problem in nonlinear non-minimum phase systems using feedback linearization method. The proposed method converts the problem to an equivalent optimization problem where the constraints of which include minimum phase conditions and the cost function is the Euclidean distance between the system output and the parameterized redefined output. To solve this constrained optimization problem, it is first approximated to an unconstrained one using the barrier method and then, through the steepest descent algorithm, optimization parameters (the redefined output parameters) are iteratively obtained in an on-line manner such that at each time the minimum phase conditions are satisfied. Indeed, solving the optimization problem leads to find a minimum phase output as close as possible to the system output. On the other hand, since this minimum phase output tracks the reference signal using feedback linearization method, the system output converges to the reference signal.

We present derivative-based necessary and sufficient conditions ensuring player strategies constitute local Nash equilibria in non-cooperative continuous games. Our results can be interpreted as generalizations of analogous second-order conditions for local optimality from nonlinear programming and optimal control theory. Drawing on this analogy, we propose an iterative steepest descent algorithm for numerical approximation of local Nash equilibria and provide a sufficient condition ensuring local convergence of the algorithm. We demonstrate our analytical and computational techniques by computing local Nash equilibria in games played on a finite-dimensional differentiable manifold or an infinite-dimensional Hilbert space.

With the development of the missile digital control and network transmission technologies, the data bus transmit scheme has been paid more and more attentions. However, communication networks inevitably introduce time delay. To compensate the time delay effects, an application of fuzzy controller to such system is presented. The main contents are adjusting PID parameters using fuzzy logic method. Moreover, an optimization method is introduced to tune the consequent parameters on-line such that a certain performance Index is minimized. Simulation results show the effectiveness of these methods.

Fuzzy nonlinear equation (FNLE) plays an important role in many fields, including mathematics, engineering, statistics and so on. How to solve its numerical solution is an interesting problem. A hybrid conjugate gradient algorithm (HCGA) was proposed for solving FNLE. First, the parametric form of the equation was translated into an equivalent unconstrained optimization problem (UOP). Then, HCGA was applied to solve the corresponding optimization problem. Convergence of the algorithm was proved. Finally, numerical examples were given to illustrate the efficencies of HCGA. The comparative study shows that HCGA for solving FNLE is superior to the existent steepest descent algorithm (SDA) in terms of convergence and the numbers of iteration.

The linear piezoelectric ceramic motor (LPCM) has advantages such as high force at low speed, silence, no electromagnetic interference. However, the accuracy of control is greatly influenced by the existence of uncertainties including variation of system parameters, external disturbance. A suitable control system for the LPCM is not easy to design, thus the development of control strategies will surround the model-free strategies. Moreover, the terminal steepest descent algorithm (TSDA) has been adopted as the adjustment of network parameters in this study. Final, the simulation results will be shown to compare the proposed control method in this study.

This paper proposes a precoding scheme for downlink multiuser MIMO-OFDM systems. The proposed precoding employs the minimum bit error rate (BER) criterion and estimates precoding matrices to minimize total BER of mobile stations by the steepest descent algorithm. As the cost function of the proposed scheme, an upper bound of the total BER is derived from the pairwise error probability (PEP) and is averaged with respect to channel state information (CSI) errors. Thus, the proposed scheme can be robust to imperfect CSI. Computer simulations under a frequency-selective fading condition demonstrate that the proposed precoder is more robust to the CSI errors than the zero-forcing (ZF) precoder, and that it is superior in BER to the conventional scheme.

The fuzzy logic system is an expert system based on fuzzy logic and fuzzy reasoning. It consists of a series of fuzzy rules, which can better represent expert knowledge and effectively treat uncertainty and inaccuracy existing in the field of medical diagnosis. To overcome the rules explosion problem, this paper proposes a novel single-input rule module connected fuzzy logic system, in which the rules adopt single-input antecedents and multi-output consequents with the form of Fuzzy Weighted Linear Function (SIRM-FWLF for short). The updating formulas using the steepest descent algorithm are also deduced to optimize the system parameters. At last, numerical simulations are conducted in the MATLAB environment to compare our SIRM-FWLF model with Mamdani, TSK fuzzy logic systems and fuzzy functional SIRM inference model for medical diagnosis of breast cancer. The simulation results show that the proposed SIRM-FWLF FLS can provide higher diagnostic accuracy and recall rates than other fuzzy logic systems or fuzzy inference models.

In this paper, we focus on a rank constrained optimization problem with general Schur-convex/concave objective function and multiple trace/log-determinant constraints. We first derive a structural result on the optimal solution of the rank constrained problem without relaxation using majorization theory. Based on the solution structure, we transform the rank constrained problem into an equivalent problem with a unitary constraint. After that, we derive an iterative projected steepest descent algorithm which converges to a local optimal solution. Furthermore, we shall show that under some special cases, we could even derive closed form global optimal solution. The numerical results show the superior performance of the our proposed technique over the baseline schemes, the rank relaxation based randomization technique.

We consider a class of alloys and ceramics with equilibria described by non-attainable infima of non-quasiconvex variational integrals. Such situations frequently arise when atomic lattice structure plays an important role at the mesoscopic continuum level. We prove that standard variational approaches associated with gradient based relaxation of non-quasiconvex integrals in Banach or Hilbert spaces are not capable of generating relaxing sequences for problems with non-attainable structure. We introduce a variational principle suitable for the computational purposes of approaching non-attainable infima of variational integrals. We demonstrate that this principle is suitable for direct calculations of the Young Measures on a computational example in one dimension. The new variational principle provides the possibility to approximate crystalline microstructures using a Fokker-Planck equation at the meso-scale. We provide an example of such a construction.
