Determining inactive constraints in stochastic security-constrained unit commitment using cumulants

Scheduling for generation units in modern power markets is one of the most important tasks of independent system operators (ISO). To ensure secure and economical operation of power systems, ISOs solve the security constrained unit commitment (SCUC) problem. SCUC is a very complex and large-scale optimization problem. In addition, uncertainties imposed by wind generators and variable loads add to this complexity. stochastic SCUC, one of the most important problems for scheduling generation units, considers different power system uncertainties. A considerable amount of previous works demonstrates the efficacy of decomposition techniques, such as benders' decomposition for stochastic SCUC. Solving this problem, even with decomposition techniques, for large-scale systems with multiple uncertainties is very time-consuming. A major part of stochastic SCUC constraints belongs to network security. This paper presents a method in which cumulants are used to detect and eliminate inactive network constraints during the solving process. As a result, the method reduces the number of network security constraints and decreases the simulation time considerably. Implementing the proposed method on a six -bus test system and a modified IEEE 118-bus system demonstrates its efficiency and accuracy.

The environmental advantage of distributed energy resources (DERs) application has attracted lots of research attention and encouraged to implement clean power producers. In spite of the environmental benefits of renewable energy sources application as distributed power generation, the variability of renewable energy, e.g. wind power uncertainty, can potentially endanger the operation of electric power system. This paper presents a new techno-economic factor (TEF) for DERs based on the effect of their generation on network losses and the relationship between active/reactive power loss and generated power from thermal power plants. In order to simultaneously investigate these new factors and wind power uncertainty on power network operation, a stochastic security constrained unit commitment (SCUC) for 24 h is defined consisting of generation and emission costs. Demand Response Scheduling by stochastic SCUC

Considerable developments in the real-time telemetry of demand-side systems allow independent system operators (ISOs) to use reserves provided by demand response (DR) in ancillary service markets. Currently, many ISOs have designed programs to utilize the reserve provided by DR in electricity markets. This paper presents a stochastic model to schedule reserves provided by DR in the wholesale electricity markets. Demand-side reserve is supplied by demand response providers (DRPs), which have the responsibility of aggregating and managing customer responses. A mixed-integer representation of reserve provided by DRPs and its associated cost function are used in the proposed stochastic model. The proposed stochastic model is formulated as a two-stage stochastic mixed-integer programming (SMIP) problem. The first-stage involves network-constrained unit commitment in the base case and the second-stage investigates security assurance in system scenarios. The proposed model would schedule reserves provided by DRPs and determine commitment states of generating units and their scheduled energy and spinning reserves in the scheduling horizon. The proposed approach is applied to two test systems to illustrate the benefits of implementing demand-side reserve in electricity markets.

Hourly Coordination of Electric Vehicle Operation and Volatile Wind Power Generation in SCUC

In this paper, the coordinated integration of aggregated plug-in electric vehicle (PEV) fleets and renewable energy sources (wind energy) in power systems is studied by stochastic security-constrained unit commitment (stochastic SCUC) model, which minimizes the expected grid operation cost while considering the random behavior of the many PEVs. PEVs are mobile and distributed devices with deferrable options for the supply/utilization of energy at various times and locations. The increased utilization of PEVs, which consume electricity rather than fossil fuel for driving, offers unique economic and environmental opportunities, and brings out new challenges to electric power system operation and planning. The storage capability of PEVs could help power systems mitigate the variability of renewable energy sources and reduce grid operation costs. Vehicle-to-grid (V2G) enables PEVs to have bi-directional power flows once they are connected to the grid, i.e., they can either inject power to, and draw power from, the grid which adds further complexity to power system operations. PEVs signify customers' random behavior when considering their driving patterns, locational energy requirements, topological grid interconnections, and other constraints imposed by the consumers. Numerical tests demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach for analyzing the impact of PEVs on the grid operation cost and hourly wind energy dispatch.

Optimal electric vehicles charging scheduling for energy and reserve markets considering wind uncertainty and generator contingency

Decarburization of electrical systems encourage high wind power into electric power systems and the electrification of transport sectors through electric vehicles (EVs). The increasing penetration of uncertain wind power generation and transportation networks via EV charging stations has introduced challenges for system operators to manage power systems and market operations. In this context, this paper presents a stochastic AC security-constrained unit commitment (SCUC) model to clear day-ahead energy and reserve markets considering transportation-electricity networks through EV charging stations in the presence of uncertain wind power and generator contingency. Pre-contingency ranking is a common strategy for reducing the time of the SCUC problem, but it provides high-impact outages. To address this issue, generator outages ranked first are identified using the post-contingency generator response ranking approach. The main contribution of this paper is the development of a structure with the most effective outages in the presence of uncertain wind power and transportation networks. The stochastic optimization approach is modeled through scenarios with corresponding probabilities to manage the wind uncertainty. The computationally complex proposed model is solved by a prominent bender decomposition approach. Case studies are shown on a modified IEEE 118-bus system with 26 nodes and 74 connected links of the electricity transportation network. The results show that optimal EV travel scheduling can optimize the transportation network and a sufficient energy reserve, confirming the security of the power system with minimum operating cost.

Enhancing the Dispatchability of Variable Wind Generation by Coordination With Pumped-Storage Hydro units in stochastic Power Systems

The ever-increasing penetration of variable wind energy in power systems affects the hourly dispatch of thermal power generation in electricity markets. The variability of wind energy, which makes the wind energy non-dispatchable and difficult to control, could bring significant challenges to power system operators. The hourly coordination of wind power generation units with pumped-storage hydro (PS) generation could relieve the variability of wind energy and increase its dispatchability. The wind-PS coordination is based on the application of stochastic security-constrained unit commitment (stochastic SCUC). In this study, the coordinated hourly bus-level scheduling of wind-PS is compared with the coordinated system-level operation strategies in the day-ahead scheduling of power systems.

Coordination of Interdependent Natural Gas and Electricity Infrastructures for Firming the Variability of Wind Energy in stochastic Day-Ahead Scheduling

In this paper, the coordination of constrained electricity and natural gas infrastructures is considered for firming the variability of wind energy in electric power systems. The stochastic security-constrained unit commitment is applied for minimizing the expected operation cost in the day-ahead scheduling of power grid. The low cost and sustainable wind energy could substitute natural gas-fired units, which are constrained by fuel availability and emission. Also, the flexibility and quick ramping capability of natural gas units could firm the variability of wind energy. The electricity and natural gas network constraints are considered in the proposed model (referred to as EGTran) and Benders decomposition is adopted to check the natural gas network feasibility. The autoregressive moving average (ARMA) time-series model is used to simulate wind speed forecast errors in multiple Monte Carlo scenarios. Illustrative examples demonstrate the effectiveness of EGTran for firming the variable wind energy by coordinating the constrained electricity and natural gas delivery systems.

Hourly Electricity Demand Response in the stochastic Day-Ahead Scheduling of Coordinated Electricity and Natural Gas Networks

This paper studies the role of hourly economic demand response in the optimization of the stochastic day-ahead scheduling of electric power systems with natural gas transmission constraints. The proposed coordinated stochastic model (referred to as EGTran) considers random outages of generating units and transmission lines, and random errors in forecasting the day-ahead hourly loads. The Monte Carlo simulation is applied to create multiple scenarios for representing the coordinated system uncertainties. The nonlinear natural gas network constraints are linearized and incorporated into the stochastic model. Numerical results demonstrate the benefits of applying the hourly economic demand response for enhancing the scheduling coordination of natural gas and electricity networks. It is demonstrated that electricity demand response would offer a less volatile hourly load profile and locational marginal prices, and less dependence on natural gas constraints for the optimal operation of electric power systems. The proposed model for EGTran could be applied by grid operators for the hourly commitment and dispatch of power system units.

Ensuring the security and quality of supply in a power system after a contingency event is one of the most challenging tasks for an electricity system operator. This work is initiated by this challenge and proposes a solution based on the use of provided reserves by fast generators, storage devices, and wind farms. A coordinated model is proposed in a joint energy and reserves market considering their corresponding cost to ensure the adequacy in the simultaneous deployment of reserves for the different sources of uncertainties. The Benders decomposition approach is used in the modeling of the stochastic security-constrained unit commitment, and considering the large-scale and complex nature of the model, acceleration techniques are suggested to reduce the execution time. The proposed model is tested on the 6-bus and the IEEE 118-bus test systems. Numerical results show that the optimal values of reserves successfully address contingencies in both of the critical and normal periods after the contingencies and the optimal solution is calculated in a reasonable computing time.

Optimal coordination of variable renewable resources and electric vehicles as distributed storage for energy sustainability

This paper evaluates the coordination between electric vehicle (EV) fleets, as distributed storage devices, and variable renewable sources for mitigating energy imbalances and offering significant potentials for energy sustainability in an electricity infrastructure. The paper investigates the impact of such integrations for enhancing the environmental sustainability, social sustainability, and economic operation of electric power systems. The goal is to keep the energy sector on track for addressing the 2 degree Celsius (2DC) target per Copenhagen climate agreement. 1 The paper identifies strategies for large-scale integration of variable generation resources without compromising the electricity infrastructure security. The power system uncertainties pertaining to hourly load and wind energy forecast errors, and random outages of generation and transmission components are taken into consideration in Monte Carlo scenarios. The stochastic optimization of day-ahead hourly scheduling of electricity is formulated as a mixed integer linear programming problem. The merits of the proposed optimization model are demonstrated by applying four numerical case studies. The conclusion is that the applications of renewable energy resources and the intelligent assimilation of EV fleets (both as a provider and a consumer of energy) offer major potentials for alleviating power system peak demands, minimizing power grid operation costs and hourly wind energy curtailments, and limiting the environmental impacts of fossil fuel-based thermal generating units in the stochastic operation of an electricity infrastructure.
