Systems engineering (SE) of defense systems and critical infrastructure must incorporate consideration of threats and vulnerabilities to malicious subversion into the engineering requirements, architecture, and design processes. Recognizing this need, the United States Department of Defense recently revitalized its system security engineering (SSE) efforts by extending its program protection processes to apply SSE principles and body of knowledge to defense acquisition programs [1]. At the same time, a growing number of military capabilities are being fielded through system of systems (SoS) approaches which are not necessarily managed under formal acquisition processes. This trend is expected to continue. Recognizing this trend, several years ago the DoD undertook an initiative to develop initial guidance on the system engineering of SoS [3]. In the ensuing years, a companion body of knowledge has been developed [4]. More recently, the importance and the challenges of applying SSE beyond individual systems to SoS has been recognized [4]. The question arises, "what does or should SSE look like in an SoS environment?" This paper presents the results of an exploratory investigation of SSE as an integral element of SoS SE. Defense-based approaches to SoS SE are reviewed and logical extensions to address SSE for SoS and program protection are described within an SoS SE framework. The results of case studies exploring how SoS currently address security at the SoS level are presented. Finally, observations and challenges are discussed, including whether and how guidelines and practices for SSE at the individual or constituent system level can be extended to the ensemble of systems that collectively create an SoS capability.

In the upcoming smart grid environment many more measurements will be available, which can be locally processed by the so-called substation state estimator (SSE). Distribution substations serve energy to a large set of feeders, each one delivering power to a certain number of secondary transformers. In this context, the SSE may have to deal with a huge network model, comprising several hundred or even thousand buses. Taking advantage of the weak electrical coupling existing among the set of feeders connected to the same or adjacent substations, a two-stage procedure is proposed in this paper to efficiently solve the SSE. In the first stage the overall SE is decomposed into f + s WLS subproblems (f and s being the total number of feeders and substations, respectively), which are then solved in a decoupled manner. The second stage, involving a linear WLS problem, consists of coordinating the solution provided by each subsystem (feeder or substation). The proposed solution scheme has a number of advantages, as shown by the case studies.

This paper presents the implementation and optimization of the SCME(Spatial Channel Model Extension) on the GPP(General Purpose Processor) platform using SSE(streaming simd extensions) instructions and multithreading *** SCME which is the expansion of the SCM(Spatial Channel Model) introduces the concept of "mid-paths" and can support up to 100 MHz bandwidths in 2～5 GHz frequency *** this paper we demonstrate detailed computational analysis of the *** order to reduce the latency,it is very significant to optimize the *** optimization methods are proposed:SSE instructions,multithreading and linear interpolation *** instructions and multithreading can solve this problem via increasing the computing parallel *** interpolation algorithm can reduce the complexity effectively by considering the effectiveness of the sampling *** the experiment result we can get that the SSE instructions with the help of IPP(Integrated Performance Primitives) library function can reduce the delay to 1/5 when operating in 32-bit floating-point,multithreading can reduce the delay to 2/5,meanwhile linear interpolation algorithm can reduce the delay to 1/20 with large amount data and ration of linear interpolation L=*** the three optimization methods are utilized simultaneously,the delay can be cut off remarkably compared with no optimization method utilized.

Our previous studies have shown good biocompatibility of fluorapatite (FA) crystal surfaces in providing a favorable environment for functional cell-matrix interactions of human dental pulp stem cells (DPSCs) and also in supporting their long-term growth. The aim of the current study was to further investigate whether this enamel-like surface can support the differentiation and mineralization of DPSCs, and, therefore, act as a potential model for studying the enamel/dentin interface and, perhaps, dentine/pulp regeneration in tooth tissue engineering. The human pathway-focused osteogenesis polymerase chain reaction (PCR) array demonstrated that the expression of osteogenesis-related genes of human DPSCs was increased on FA surfaces compared with that on etched stainless steel (SSE). Consistent with the PCR array, FA promoted mineralization compared with the SSE surface with or without the addition of a mineralization promoting supplement (MS). This was confirmed by alkaline phosphatase (ALP) staining, Alizarin red staining, and tetracycline staining for mineral formation. In conclusion, FA crystal surfaces, especially ordered (OR) FA surfaces, which mimicked the physical architecture of enamel, provided a favorable extracellular matrix microenvironment for the cells. This resulted in the differentiation of human DPSCs and mineralized tissue formation, and, thus, demonstrated that it may be a promising biomimetic model for dentin-pulp tissue engineering.

Condition monitoring of SSE gas turbines using artificial neural networks

SSE (formerly Scottish & Southern Energy) has been pursuing a path of continuous improvement in asset reliability, performance and productivity. The Equipment Performance Centre of SSE uses predictive analytics to monitor SSE business critical assets. Gas turbines are one of the most versatile prime mover technologies in the fleet. Power generation using gas turbines has become very popular because of the availability of gas and its relatively low emissions. Detecting impending failures on gas turbines reduces the risk of operational disruption, risk to personnel and loss of revenue, and maintains plant integrity. Effective monitoring and diagnosis requires a range of techniques. This paper outlines one of the diagnostic techniques used to detect combustor-related damage by the examination of gas turbine exhaust temperatures. The diagnostics methodology involves the use of an auto-associative neural network (AANN) to detect anomalies when the current condition deviates from normal behaviour. This type of neural network is a novel approach for the detection of combustor-related damages. The AANN was developed in MATLAB. This method has successfully detected several different combustor-related incidents in the SSE gas turbine fleet. Events such as this have the potential to release material into the gas flow path and cause damage to the turbine. The cost of such a failure can be in the region of several million pounds. The technique can also be used to detect anomalies on other gas turbine sections, ie compressor, fuel, cooling and mechanical systems. This paper illustrates how the technique can be applied to monitor any series of industrial gas turbines.

Phytochemical Characteristics, Free Radical Scavenging Activities, and Neuroprotection of Five Medicinal Plant Extracts

The objective of this study was to determine phytochemical characteristics, chemiluminescence antioxidant capacities, and neuroprotective effects on PC12 cells for methanol extracts of Spatholobus suberectus, Uncaria rhynchophylla, Alpinia officinarum, Drynaria fortunei, and Crataegus pinnatifida. The C. pinnatifida extract (CPE) afforded the greatest yield and total phenolic content. The S. suberectus extract (SSE) yielded the greatest total flavonoid content. The U. rhynchophylla extract (URE) produced the greatest total tannin content, and the A. officinarum extract (AOE) produced the greatest total triterpenoid content. The D. fortunei extract, assayed using horseradish peroxidase-luminol-hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), and AOE using pyrogallol-luminol assay each exhibited better antioxidant activity than the L-ascorbic acid and 6-hydroxy-2,5,7,8-tetramethylchroman-2-carboxylic acid did. The CPE, SSE, and URE presented neurogrowth effects and neuroprotective activities on H2O2-induced PC12 cell death at 0.5-5.0 mu g/mL. The CPE represents a promising medicinal plant source for the treatment of H2O2-induced neurodegenerative disease, because of its useful phytochemical characteristics.

A broad variety of short-read alignment programmes has been released recently to address the task of mapping tens of millions of short reads to a reference genome, placing emphasis on various aspects of the problem. Although all programmes allow for a small number of alignment mismatches, some of them either perform poorly when allowing gap insertions or they do not allow for gap insertions at all. The seed-and-extend strategy is applied in most of these programmes: after a fast alignment between a fragment of the reference sequence and a high-quality fragment of a short read-the seed-an important problem is to extend the alignment between a relatively short succeeding fragment of the reference sequence and the remaining low-quality fragment of the read allowing a number of mismatches and the insertion of gaps in the alignment. However, the length of the short reads in combination with the gap occurrence frequency observed in various applications suggest that the single-gap alignment of (parts of) those reads is desirable. In this article, we present libgapmis, an ultrafast library for pairwise short-read single-gap alignment including accelerated SSE-based and GPU-based versions. It implements an algorithm, which computes a modified version of the traditional dynamic programming matrix for sequence alignment to solve the above alignment problem. We show that the library functions of the CPU-based version are up to 20x faster compared to competing programmes, while the respective SSE-based and GPU-based versions are up to 6x and llx faster than our CPU-based implementation, respectively. The functions made available via our library can be seamlessly integrated into any short-read alignment pipeline.

The library RNGSSELIB for random number generators (RNGs) based upon the SSE2 command set is presented. The library contains realization of a number of modern and most reliable generators. Usage of SSE2 command set allows to substantially improve performance of the generators. Three new RNG realizations are also constructed. We present detailed analysis of the speed depending on compiler usage and associated optimization level, as well as results of extensive statistical testing for all generators using available test packages. Electrodeposition of Pt_100-xPb_x Metastable Alloys and Intermetallics

The electrodeposition of a series of metastable Pt-Pb alloys and intermetallic phases as well as elemental Pt is demonstrated using an acid electrolyte comprised of 0.05 mol/l Pb(ClO4)(2) and/or 0.001 mol/l K2PtCl4. Pt-Pb films were deposited at various potentials relative to the reversible potential for Pb/Pb2+ (EPb/Pb2+ = -0.80 V SSE). A metastable fcc Pt-Pb solid solution is formed at potentials between -0.2 and -0.78 V SSE. A monotonic increase in the fcc lattice parameter with decreasing potential corresponds to a rise in Pb content that spans the composition range from Pt to beyond Pt3Pb. The intermetallics, PtPb, PtPb4 and elemental Pb form at more negative potentials. The films are single or multiphase depending on the growth potential and substrate. Thermal annealing leads to phase separation of the deposits into the respective equilibrium intermetallic phases whose volume fractions enable the overall film composition to be determined. At more negative potentials, between -0.79 and -0.82 V SSE, the ordered hexagonal PtPb intermetallic phase is directly formed by electrodeposition. Co-deposition of Pt100-xPbx at potentials positive of -0.8 V SSE (EPb/Pb2+) occurs by a combination of Pb underpotential deposition with overpotential Pt deposition. Feasibility of controlling prosthetic hand using sonomyography signal in real time: Preliminary study

The morphological changes of muscle can he accurately detected by sonography, a process we have termed sonomyography (SMG). This article investigates the feasibility of using muscle thickness deformation SMG as a new signal source to control a prosthetic hand in real time. Thickness deformation SMG of the extensor muscle was measured by a block-matching algorithm during wrist extension-flexion;the amplitude of the deformation was used to control the prosthetic hand. We compared various fast-search algorithms to select the best one for real-time prosthetic control. The two-dimensional logarithmic search (TDL) algorithm, with and without streaming single-instruction multiple-data extensions, showed excellent execution efficiency, with an overall mean correlation coefficient of about 0.99, a mean standard root-mean-square error <0.75, and a mean relative root-mean-square error <8.0% referenced to the cross-correlation algorithm baseline. The mean frame rates were greater than the ultrasound sampling rate (12 Hz), indicating that TDL could be implemented in real-time control. These results demonstrate that only one muscle position is needed to control a prosthetic hand, allowing for proprioception of muscle tension, and that the SMG provides good control of the prosthetic hand, allowing it to proportionally open and close with a fast-search algorithm.
