Social risk analysis for mega construction projects based on structural equation model and Bayesian network: a risk evolution perspective

PurposeMega construction projects (MCPs), which play an important role in the economy, society and environment of a country, have developed rapidly in recent years. However, due to frequent social conflicts caused by the negative social impact of MCPs, social risk control has become a major challenge. Exploring the relationship between social risk factors and social risk from the perspective of risk evolution and identifying key factors contribute to social risk control;but few studies have paid enough attention to this. Therefore, this study aims to systematically analyze the impact of social risk factors on social risk based on a social risk evolution ***/methodology/approachThis study proposed a social risk evolution path for MCPs explaining how social risk occurs and develops with the impact of social risk factors. To further analyze the impact quantitatively, a social risk analysis model combining structural equation model (SEM) with Bayesian network (BN) was developed. SEM was used to verify the relationship in the social risk evolution path. BN was applied to identify key social risk factors and predict the probabilities of social risk, quantitatively. The feasibility of the proposed model was verified by the case of water conservancy *** results show that negative impact on residents' living standards, public opinion advantage and emergency management ability were key social risk factors through sensitivity analysis. BackgroundOsteoporosis is a considerable public health challenge in Moyu County, Xinjiang. Here, we evaluated the influencing factors of osteoporosis in this *** recruited 7,761 participants and randomized them into normal and osteoporotic populations based on T-score. The effects of general conditions, body composition, calcium sources and exercise, respiratory exposure, and daily diet on osteoporosis were analyzed. Furthermore, a structural equation model was constructed to uncover the direct and indirect influencing factors of *** the participants, 1,803 (23.23%) had normal bone mass while 1,496 (19.28%) had osteoporosis. The univariate analysis showed significant differences in the general conditions, body composition, calcium sources and exercise, respiratory exposure, and daily diet. Stratification based on age (45 years) and body mass index (BMI) (18.5 kg/m2) showed variations in the body composition between the two groups;however, the visceral fat differed significantly. Logistic regression analysis affirmed the association of visceral fat index as it was included in all equations, except for age and female menopause. The structural equation exhibited that the general conditions, body composition, and, calcium sources, and exercise were direct factors of osteoporosis, while respiratory exposure and daily diet were indirect factors. The standardized path coefficient was highest in general conditions, followed by body composition, and lastly, calcium sources and ***, besides age and female menopause, is also an influencing factor of osteoporosis. The visceral fat index plays a vital role in osteoporosis. Our findings may provide experimental evidence for early prevention and treatment of osteoporosis.

Water engineering facilities are a crucial component of the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal during the Ming and Qing dynasties, and their distribution is closely related to the hydrological and topographical characteristics of the area. In this study, we reconstructed the canal network distribution map and water engineering facilities database of the Ming and Qing periods using ArcGIS (Geographical information systems software) 10.8 software. We employed Amos (Analyze of Moment Structures) 26.0 software to investigate the influence of various natural environmental factors on the selection of water engineering facility sites. The results revealed a significant correlation between the spatial distribution of water engineering facilities and the main channel slope and slope direction, which had a direct impact. The estimated coefficient for the main channel slope was -0.166, showing a negative correlation with the spatial distribution of water engineering facilities, while the estimated coefficient for the main channel slope direction was - 0.112, also indicating a negative correlation. Moreover, the estimated coefficient for the watershed area where water engineering facilities were located was -0.096, demonstrating a negative correlation. In contrast, the effects of tributary slope and slope direction on the spatial distribution of water engineering facilities were indirect, mediated by the watershed area where these facilities were situated. The effect size for tributary slope was -0.017, showing a negative correlation, while the effect size for tributary slope direction was 0.010, indicating a positive correlation with the spatial distribution of water engineering *** study achieves the integration of the heritage of water engineering facilities along the canal from point to line, provides data support for the construction of the cultural heritage corridor of the canal, and facilitates the promotion of heritage protection and rational layout, which is of gr

PurposeThe demand for power has surged in recent times and continues to increase yearly. In comparison to developed countries, the power industry's risks, especially in piblic-private partnership (PPP) projects, are more complex and essential in developing countries. Appreciating the inter relationship among these risk factors is crucial. However, there exist no studies developing quantitative models to explain how various PPP power risk factors influence each other, especially in developing countries like Ghana. This study aims to investigate and model the relationship, the probability of occurrence and severity of impact of PPP power risk factors in ***/methodology/approachData were collected through ranking type questionnaire in a two-round Delphi survey with 48 respondents using purposive and snowball sampling techniques. partial least squares structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM) was used for analysis of *** model was developed to investigate the influence the risk factors inherent in PPP power projects have on each other. Distribution network topology identification (DNTI) is an important prerequisite for distribution system operation. Frequent topology changes and limited measurement equipment make identifying the correct topology unavoidably challenging. To this end, this paper proposes a state estimation method for distribution network topology identification using a small amount of phasor measurement unit (PMU) measurement data. Firstly, this paper introduces the application of the structural equation model (SEM) in distribution networks and explains the relationship between branch currents and topology. Then, auxiliary variables are introduced for the feasible domain problem present in the algorithm, which improves the solvability of the algorithm. In addition, this paper reconsiders the operation mode constraints in terms of nodes from the perspective of distribution network operation mode. The structural equation modeling-based Mixed Integer Programming (SEM-MIP) method proposed in this paper can be solved using existing commercial solvers, and its effectiveness has been verified by simulation in IEEE 33-node test system and IEEE 123-node test system.

Research on Safety Risk Assessment of Xi'an Metro Operation Based on structural equation model (SEM)-Matter-Element Extension model (MEA)

To ensure the safety of Xi'an Metro operation and improve the level of operational safety risk management, a comprehensive evaluation model of operational safety risk of Xi'an Metro based on structural equation model (SEM)-matter-element extension model (MEA) was established based on 4M theory. Firstly, by analyzing both domestic and international Metro accident cases and literature, four risk factor perspectives were identified as personnel, equipment, management, and environment. Secondly, to accurately assess the safety risk of Xi'an Metro operation, a risk evaluation index system consisting of four primary indicators, eleven secondary indicators and forty-four observation points was established. Finally, the index weights were determined using structural equation modeling, and a comprehensive evaluation utilizing the Matter-element extension model was conducted to obtain precise safety evaluation results. The model was applied to Xi'an Metro Line 2, and the results indicated that the operational safety level of Xi'an Metro Line 2 is relatively secure. According to the evaluation results above, the findings align with the current conditions. Xi'an Metro operating company can utilize these results as a point of reference to propose measures that correspond to varying risks. This will effectively reduce safety risks and ensure the safe operation of Xi'an Metro.

A latent class structural equation model of the relationship between travel satisfaction and overall life satisfaction controlling for satisfaction with other life domains

This paper investigates heterogeneity in the relationship between different life domain satisfactions including travel satisfaction and overall life satisfaction using data collected in Xi'an, China. A latent class structural equation model of the relationship between life domain satisfaction and overall life satisfaction is estimated to identify heterogeneous segments of respondents, controlling for the effects of socio-demographic characteristics, personality traits and typical commuting time on the latent variables. The results indicate that the segments differ in the weight attached to the different life domains. Interestingly, the direct effect of travel satisfaction on overall life satisfaction is not significant in the identified classes, but indirect effect of travel satisfaction on overall life satisfaction through other life domains is significant. It emphasizes the critical importance of estimating a more comprehensive model of life satisfaction when assessing the role of travel satisfaction.

Interactions between work-related factors, perceived fatigue and musculoskeletal disorders among handicraft artisans: structural equation model analysis

The cross-sectional study aimed to investigate the relationship between work-related factors, perceived work fatigue (PWF) and musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) among handicraft artisans. 364 artisans participated in a questionnaire survey, and a structural equation model (SEM) was developed to explore the direct and indirect relationships between these factors using partial least squares analysis. The SEM explained 98.2% of the variance in MSDs and revealed that exposure to biomechanical factors had a direct impact on PWF and MSDs, with PWF mediating the effect of biomechanical factors on MSDs. Additionally, job demand was found to be positively associated with MSDs, while job control and social support reduced the risk of MSDs. The findings underscore the importance of strategic initiatives to mitigate the risk of developing MSDs among artisans. The study also highlights the potential of SEM as a novel framework for understanding the complex pathogenesis of MSDs in occupational health *** summary: The study sought to comprehensively examine the intricate relationships among work-related factors, PWF, and MSDs. Use behaviour of academic social networking sites in research communication: a structural equation model

PurposeThe current study seeks to investigate, why and how faculty members of Indian central universities are using academic social networking sites (ASNs) for research communication and information dissemination, as well as validate and update the results of previous scholarship in this area. To achieve this, the paper uses structural equation model (SEM).Design/methodology/approachA simple random sampling method was adopted. Online survey was conducted using a well-designed questionnaire circulated via email id among 3384 faculty members of Indian Central Universities. A SEM was designed and tested with International Business Machines (IBM) Amos. Apart from this, Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) 22 and Microsoft Excel 2010 were also used for data screening and *** study explores that most of the respondents are in favour of using the ASNs/tools for their professional activities. The study also found that a large chunk of the respondents used ASNs tools during day time. Apart from it, more number of faculty members used ASNs in research work than general purpose. No significant differences were found among the disciplines in use behaviour of ASNs in scholarly communication. Three hypotheses have been accepted while two were rejected in this *** limitations/implicationsThe study was confined to the twelve central universities, and only 312 valid responses were taken into consideration in this ***/valueThe paper demonstrates the faculty members' use behaviour of ASNs in their research communication. The study also contributes new knowledge to methodological discussions as it is the first known study to employ SEM to interpret scholarly use of ASNs by faculty members of Indian central universities.

The instrumental variable (IV) methods are attractive since they can lead to a consistent answer to the main question in causal modeling, that is, the estimation of average causal effect of an exposure on the outcome in the presence of unmeasured confounding. However, it is now acknowledged in the literature that using weak IVs might not suit the inference goal satisfactorily. We consider the problem of estimating causal effects in an observational study in this article, allowing some IVs to be weak. In many modern learning jobs, we may face a large number of instruments and their quality could range from poor to strong. To incorporate them in a 2-stage least squares estimation procedure, we consider a model averaging technique. The proposed methods only involve a few layers of least squares estimation with closed-form solutions and thus is easy to implement in practice. Theoretical properties are carefully established, including the consistency and asymptotic normality of the estimated causal parameter. Numerical studies are carried out to assess the performance in low- and high-dimensional settings and comparisons are made between our proposed method and a wide range of existing alternative methods. A real data example on home price is analyzed to illustrate our methodology.
