In this paper, we investigate the downlink of millimeter-wave multi-user massive MIMO systems, and propose a hybrid precoding scheme based on a sub-array architecture to achieve a better compromise between hardware cost and system performance. The proposed precoding scheme performs analog precoding and digital precoding at the transmitter with the generalized sub-array architecture. It implements analog precoding in the radio frequency domain and then performs a low dimensional digital precoding at baseband according to the effective channel matrix. We analyze the effect of the number of the overlapped antennas to the spectral efficiency, and investigate the number of users that the system can support by using different precoding schemes with the generalized sub-array architecture. The simulation results show that the proposed algorithm has lower complexity than that of the full-array precoding scheme, and can achieve superior performance than those of the other sub-array based hybrid precoding schemes.

The Effect of Parasitic Patches Addition on Bandwidth Enhancement and Mutual Coupling in 2 x 2 sub-arrays

This paper presents a 2 x 2 sub-array design with elements having parasitic patches (PPs) for massive MIMO applications. The frequency chosen for the design is 3.5 GHz, one of the 5G frequency allocations. A coaxial feeding probe is employed. For each sub-array element, multiple PPs are placed on the top layer to enhance the bandwidth. We show that with a greater number of PPs, the bandwidth of an element can be increased considerably with respect to previous designs. Two types of single element antenna with 5 and 10 PPs exhibit a bandwidth of more than 600 MHz and 700 MHz or a fractional bandwidth of about 17% and 20%, respectively. The increase in element dimension and, consequently, element spacings reduces the mutual coupling in the sub-array. Simulation results and measurements of the 2 x 2 sub-arrays with the 5-PP and the 10-PP elements show that the sub-arrays meet the desired performance with return loss less than -10 dB and bandwidth of 567 MHz and 730 MHz, respectively. Mutual coupling effects can be suppressed to less than -20 dB in the frequency range of 3.202 GHz -3.934 GHz.

Setting a proper number of antenna elements in arrays as a DDM unit, an artifice of DDM application for extremely big arrays is presented to balance the required RAM and calculating time for solving in each DDM unit and information exchange among different units. With this method, for array with hundreds of elements, both of the RAM and time consumed could be reduced, while the big arrays which are out of the compute capacity for average hardware platform could be simulated on a distributed system.

This paper describes the design and realization of a Massive MIMO array antenna which incorporates 16 filtering sub-arrays (i.e., array of 1-by-2 elements). The sub-arrays operates at 3.55 GHz which is an allocated frequency with in the CBRS (Citizen Broadband Radio Service) band to cover a bandwidth of approximately 100 MHz. Two stacked microstrip patch antennas connected by two highly isolated feed networks enable a sub-array to provide slanted +/-45-deg. polarization, with the port-to-port coupling of less than -23 dB. The feed networks, which are slightly different in structure, overcome the traces crossover issue by employing a combination of series and corporate feeding scheme. The embedded gain of the sub-array on average is nearly 11.5 dB where the cross-polarization rejection ratio is 20 dB in broadside direction. The initial performance evaluation of the fabricated filtering array, including the matching condition and frequency selectivity testing, demonstrated an acceptable agreement with numerical predictions.

An antenna sub-array configuration and the design of the antenna element for a dual-polarized X-band SAR application are presented. The antenna element is based on an aperture-coupled stacked patch that, unlike typical designs, does not include any foam layers. The sub-array including the antenna elements and the feed-network can be realized using currently available multi-layered printed circuit board fabrication techniques.

The trend towards highly modular phased arrays with simplified beam forming networks is being driven by modern communication and sensing antenna system applications. In the last years, this has led to an increased focus on unconventional phased array architectures, proposing array thinning, sparsening, and clustering to reduce the complexity and costs of conventional fully-populated arrays. The purpose of this work is provide an overview of recent contributions in this field and to discuss methodological and architectural advances of modular phased arrays for modern radar, sensing, and satellite/terrestrial communication applications. Additionally, the design of a modular tiled phased array addressing satcom on-the-move requirements is illustrated as an instance of the reviewed state-of-the-art design techniques.

This paper presents an antenna array organized in sub-arrays and composed of densely spaced dielectric-based radiating elements. To reduce the number of active components required in the array beamforming network, each sub-array consists of a single active element, directly fed, and several passive reactively loaded elements. State-of-the-art implementations of such arrays are typically based on rectangular air-filled waveguide radiators which provide a limited bandwidth and support a single linear polarization only. By utilizing the dielectric-based radiators presented in this work, a significant increase in the operating bandwidth of the array can be achieved. In this case, the aforementioned reactive loading is implemented through short-circuited dielectric-filled waveguides. By optimizing the position of the short circuits, the radiation pattern of the sub-array can be controlled and synthesized according to a given mask. To create larger design flexibility, one can design the sub-array in the presence of the adjacent sub-arrays, achieving in this way their effective overlapping. By employing the considered design technique, a sub-array featuring flat-top radiation pattern characteristics in combination with low side-lobe levels and high gain was developed, manufactured, and thoroughly analyzed. An additional benefit of such a design choice is the possibility of supporting two orthogonal polarizations.

A simple UHF RFID reader antenna is designed with four 1x2 sub-arrays. Measured results show that an impedance bandwidth from 880 to 938 MHz is obtained, which can fully cover the UHF RFID working frequency (902 to 928 MHz). These four sub-arrays could not only provide four strong E-field distributions around the near-zone region, but also have good far-field radiation patterns within the whole working band. This UHF RFID reader antenna can avoid the risk of tag dislocation in train tracking and positioning system.

This paper presents an antenna array which is based on a novel sub-array architecture. Each sub-array is a linear array of open-ended waveguides. The central element of the sub-array is directly fed, while the other elements are short-circuited. The position of the short circuits along the waveguides controls the radiation pattern properties and scattering parameters evaluated at the active ports of the array. The proposed sub-array structure exhibits high-gain characteristics with a flat-top distribution and is used as a unit cell in a two-dimensional array. The distance between the sub array centers along the relevant main axis is large in terms of wavelengths, which leads to limited scanning capabilities, whereas the inter-element separation along the orthogonal plane is about half free-space wavelength at the central working frequency, this leading to a wide scan range. Using the presented approach, an array operating at 28.5 GHz was designed in such a way as to feature a maximal scanning angle of +/-7.4 degrees along the E-plane and +/-27.45 degrees along the H-plane. The specific sub-array pattern, which approximates a rectangular pulse distribution, allows to filter out the grating lobes along the E-plane.

This paper presents a power forward and divider switch (FDSW) which is a newly required switching circuit for a on-chip reconfigurable and scalable array. The FDSW has 4 input and output ports, and the input power at all 4 ports can be divided into two adjacent ports or forward to the other port, depending on the switch modes. The FDSW consists of a coupler and shunt switches at all coupler ports, and can switch between a forward mode and a divider mode by turning on/off the shunt switches. The proposed FDSW is designed at E-band using 28-nm FD-SOI CMOS process for a wafer-scale array. The coupler is based on a synthetic coupled line to accommodate the parasitic capacitance of the shunt transistor switch. Measurements show that the FDSW achieves the divide-mode loss of 1.4 dB and the forward-mode loss of 4.0 dB with the 1-dB power imbalance bandwidth of 76-92 GHz.
