An efficient seismic analysis technique for PCSG assembly using sub-structuring method and homogenization method

This study significantly reduced the seismic analysis time of PCSG assembly by introducing a reduced model using homogenization and sub-structuring methods. The homogenization method was applied to the primary and secondary micro-channel sheets, and the sub-structuring method was applied to the PCSG module sets. Modal analysis and frequency response analysis were then performed to validate the accuracy of the reduced model. The analysis results were compared with the full model and it was confirmed that the reduced model provided almost the same analysis results as the full model. To verify the computational efficiency of the reduced model, the computational time was then compared with the full model, and it was confirmed that the modal analysis time was reduced by 3.42 times and the frequency response analysis time was reduced by 4.59 times.

: Modern mechanical structures have become larger and more complex with multiple combined components. As complex structures are more vulnerable to the impacts caused by earthquakes, seismic analysis is needed. However, the analysis of large complex structures requires large computational resources and calculation time. These structures often have repeated patterns. In this study, an effective seismic analysis method was proposed to analyze large structures that included multi -scale repeated patterns. An effective seismic analysis can be performed by using the multi -level homogenization method on micro -scale patterns and the sub -structuring method, a model order reduction on macro -scale patterns. The analysis accuracy and efficiency of the proposed method is verified by numerical examples.

Hybrid fire testing of concrete-filled steel tube columns: A large-scale experimental and numerical investigation

Hybrid Fire Testing (HFT) integrates experimental fire testing with numerical simulations to better capture the interaction between a physical sample in a furnace fire and the structure that would surround it in real-world conditions. Unlike traditional fire testing, HFT enables a more accurate analysis of complex structural behaviours by simulating the effect of adjacent structural elements, thus providing a realistic assessment of a structure's fire performance. This paper presents a full-scale experimental hybrid fire test of a concrete-filled steel tube (CFST) column using an advanced HFT framework developed in previous research. A three-story, four-bay structure with the steel moment-resisting frame was selected for the validation. One column of the structure was physically represented in the laboratory, while the remainder of the structure was modelled numerically through finite element software. The physical specimen was heated following a standard fire curve. The experimental results are compared with numerical predictions and fire resistance tests of a similar single column to validate the performance of the developed method in full-scale applications. This comparison also provides insight into the performance of the column when acting as part of the larger structural system. The test results confirmed the proposed method can accurately simulate the complicated behaviour of a CFST column at high temperatures and subsequent failure.

Nonlinear sub-structured pseudo-dynamic testing: application to progressive collapse on reinforced concrete frames

In the past decades, progressive collapse (PC) has been of growing importance. Better understanding this phenomenon is mandatory to propose ad hoc mitigation and design approaches. Many experimental studies are carried out on sub-assemblies in quasi-static conditions due to setup and cost of full-scale dynamic tests. Numerical simulations describe dynamic responses of whole structures, although result interpretation can prove tricky due to models' complexity. Recommendations account for dynamic effects, combining static analyses with dynamic amplification factors;however, this cannot be applied to all types of PC scenarios. Thus, a new testing method is proposed: sub-structured pseudo-dynamic experiments are adapted to the PC framework. sub-structuring couples an experimentally tested critical member with a dynamic finite element model of the whole structure. The latter simulates inertial and viscous forces, while the static contribution of the critical member is tested in quasi-static conditions. This article considers a column removal scenario on a reinforced concrete frame. The structure is modelled using multi-fibre beam finite elements. The tested member consists of the lower floor's beams, subjected to compressive arch and tensile catenary actions. Pushover and PsD tests are presented, and highlight the interest of the method in providing additional information on the dynamic response.

The main objective of this work consists in analyzing sub-structuring method for the parallel solution of sparse linear systems with matrices arising from the discretization of partial differential equations such as finite element, finite volume and finite difference. With the success encountered by the general-purpose processing on graphics processing units (GPGPU), we develop an hybrid multiGPUs and CPUs sub-structuring algorithm. GPU computing, with CUDA, is used to accelerate the operations performed on each processor. Numerical experiments have been performed on a set of matrices arising from engineering problems. We compare C+MPI implementation on classical CPU cluster with C+MPI+CUDA on a cluster of GPU. The performance comparison shows a speed-up for the sub-structuring method up to 19 times in double precision by using CUDA.

Improving stability in hybrid fire testing: Advancements in analysis method and software implementation

In large-scale structural fire resistance tests, the interaction between the individual elements and the surrounding structure causes discrepancies in behaviour compared to single-element fire tests. Large-scale tests of real structures are challenging due to financial and time limitations. To bridge this gap, the concept of "Hybrid Fire Testing (HFT)" emerges, where a portion of the structural system (i.e., physical substructure) is experimentally tested while the remaining structure (i.e., numerical substructure) is analyzed numerically. The primary challenges in HFT involve ensuring stability throughout the analysis by considering the varying stiffness of the fireexposed element during the test and establishing a versatile communication platform between the physical substructure (PS) and numerical substructure (NS) components. This paper presents a comprehensive HFT framework, implemented within a user-friendly software interface, facilitating both virtual and experimental testing. The software incorporates a new method addressing stability concerns by predicting PS stiffness during the test, achieving convergence within a limited number of iterations. Additionally, the framework includes a communication platform utilizing internet protocols (IP) and COM ports for rapid and easy connection to diverse experimental control systems and finite element software packages. The functionality of the developed software is validated through its successful application in an HFT conducted on a 3-story steel structure within a simulated environment. Both force-controlled and displacement-controlled approaches confirm the method's adaptivity to the employed test procedures.

Effect of transmission error on the dynamic behaviour of gearbox housing

The dynamic response of gearbox remains a paramount concern because of noise generation. This work is concerned with numerical simulation of the overall dynamic behaviour of a parallel helical gear transmission. A dynamic sub-structuring method using different types of substructure (carrying and slave) is made to determine the natural frequencies and the corresponding mode shapes. The structure to be investigated is subdivided into components or sub-structures, which are then analyzed independently for natural frequencies and mode shapes. A numerical model taking into account the elastic coupling between the various components of a gearbox was developed. It allows studying and analyzing the dynamic behaviour of elastic housing in the presence of gear process. The static transmission error is introduced as a vibratory excitation source and it is represented by time-varying mesh stiffness. The discretization of the housing deformation energy and the kinetic energy expressions using plate finite elements leads to constructions of the stiffness and the mass matrixes. In dynamic analyses, time-discretization based on the Newmark method is used. The different equations governing movement of gearbox are established in a truncated modal base deduced from the average characteristics of the structure. A gearbox example is presented, and analyzed. A presentation and discussion of the numerical results was emphasized. The numerical results allow us to conclude on the dominant phenomena of the overall dynamic behaviour of the gear transmission.

2-D soil-structure interaction in time domain by the SBFEM and two non-linear soil models

Effects of soil-structure interaction (SSI) have proven to be of more importance than to be ignored. Quite a few methods of modeling and analysis exist to anticipate the real behavior of the structure when placed on flexible soil rather than on rigid ground surface. Yet, how to model the soil needs to be inspected carefully since probable deformations of soil may be at times far from predicted. In this study a newly formed approach is inspected to suggest possible solutions to shortcomings of conventional ones, compare two non-linear soil models, and implement strengths of newer methods. The soil-structure system is modeled and analyzed once directly with the UCSD soil model and then compared with nonlinear sub-structuring method with the UCD model. Analyzes are performed in the time domain for both cases. The soil is supposed to be comprised of sands with various density values. The Loma-Prieta earthquake record (Loma-Prieta, 1989) is used to carry out time domain analyzes and capture structural responses. The interactional forces exerted to the near-field soil, which account for the interaction between these two media as well as the radiation damping of the infinite half-space, have replaced the earthquake motion and the far-field has accordingly been truncated out. The non-linear near-field soil structure system has then been dynamically analyzed. Force outputs reveal a decrease when elastoplastic SSI is considered;while displacement amplitudes are found to be greater for cases not involving SSI, or involving elastic SSI. Changing the applied constitutive model for the soil as well as sand density from loose to dense manifests changes in responses. As the soil gets denser, the SSI behavior gets closer to that of the elastic case. Contrary to the sub-structuring method which usually, and conventionally, assumes linear elastic behavior for the soil-structure system, direct modeling may predict non-linear responses of the system and effects of the structure's being

This article presents a new communication library developed to ease the implementation of both asynchronous and synchronous iterative methods. A mathematical and algorithmic framework about fixed-point methods is described to introduce this class of parallel iterative algorithms, although this library can be used for a larger class of parallel algorithms. After an overview of the main features, we describe detailed implementation aspects arising from the asynchronous context. While the library is mainly based on top of Message Passing Interface library, it has been designed to be easily extended to other types of communication middleware. Finally, some numerical experiments validate this new library, used for implementing both a classical parallel scheme and a sub-structuring approach of the Jacobi iterative method.

Damage Index Distributions in RC Dual Lateral Load-Resistant Multi-Story Buildings Considering SSI Effects Under Bidirectional Earthquakes

Inelastic seismic responses of flexibly supported reinforced concrete (RC) moment-resisting frames representing short-to-tall structures stiffened with ductile RC structural walls were evaluated considering both far-field and near-field ground motions. A dual shear wall-frame resisting system with symmetric reference plan was created by adding shear walls into excitation direction of the three-dimensional frames developed by generic structure algorithm. The current study also aims to take into account soil-structure interaction effects in to damage assessment of multi-story RC buildings in terms of ductility demand, damage index, story shear force and overturning moment, as well as kinetic energy profile over the structure height. In doing so, the developed set of generic frames was considered accounting for different values of story strength, stiffness distribution and number of stories. A realistic modeling of nonlinear ductile behavior of RC elements was developed in combination with the sub-structuring method to consider the foundation flexibility in nonlinear seismic responses. Conducting a parametric study through nonlinear static analyses (pushover) as well as nonlinear response history analyses, the results indicated that the near-field ground motion presents much more damage than the far-field one. Inelastic dynamic responses to near-field records demonstrated that structures with a fundamental period greater than the pulse period respond differently from those that have shorter periods. The results were also presented as charts and tables that provide helpful information for engineering design purposes such as damage assessment of multi-story RC buildings with specific fundamental natural period and base shear strength.
