Continuous higher order sliding mode control for a class of uncertain MIMO nonlinear systems: An ISS approach

In this article, we propose a new approach towards the design of higher order sliding mode (HOSM) control, for a class of multiple input multiple output (MIMO) uncertain nonlinear systems subject to matched and unmatched uncertainties. In the proposed method, nonlinear sliding surfaces incorporating the system initial conditions and exponential functions, which guarantee the existence of sliding mode from an initial state are utilized and appropriate control inputs are designed. The control inputs are designed to enforce second order sliding mode w.r.t the sliding variables via the use of multivariable super-twisting algorithm (STA) in finite time. The resulting sliding motion is in turn proved to be input-to-state-stable (ISS) with respect to the perturbations and unmatched uncertainties. The developed sliding mode control strategy is applied for the posture stabilization of a unicycle mobile robot. The proposed method is illustrated through simulations. Cooperative guidance law for intercepting a hypersonic target with impact angle constraint

The cooperative guidance problem of multiple inferior missiles intercepting a hypersonic target with the specific impact angle constraint in the two-dimensional plane is addressed in this paper, taking into consideration variations in a missile's speed. The guidance law is designed with two subsystems: the direction of line-of-sight (LOS) and the direction of normal to LOS. In the direction of LOS, by applying the algebraic graph theory and the consensus theory, the guidance command is designed to make the system convergent in a finite time to satisfy the goal of cooperative interception. In the direction of normal to LOS, the impact angle is constrained to transform into the LOS angle at the time of interception. In view of the difficulty of measuring unknown target acceleration information in real scenarios, the guidance command is designed by utilising a super-twisting algorithm based on a nonsingular fast-terminal sliding mode (NFTSM) surface. Numerical simulation results manifest that the proposed guidance law performs efficiently and the guidance commands are free of chattering. In addition, the overall performance of this guidance law is assessed with Monte Carlo runs in the presence of measurement errors. The simulation results demonstrate that the robustness can be guaranteed, and that overall efficiency and accuracy in intercepting the hypersonic target are achieved.

This article is interested in a controlled three-phased voltage source inverter (VSI) for a grid-connected wind power generator. The objective consists of participating in auxiliary services by enhancing the grid stability. An active wind generator associated with a battery/super-capacitor storage system composes the studied renewable generator. It is related to a power consumer (load) to form a microgrid (MG) that can work according to grid stability in two modes: standalone and grid-tied. Thus, the principal objective of this study is to develop a robust control method for MG connection with the grid to ensure the grid voltage and frequency regulation. This control has two control tasks: First, an adaptive droop control is implemented to adjust power flows exchanged with the grid to ensure its stability. It regulates its voltage and frequency. Second, a sliding mode control (SMC) with super-twisting algorithm is put forward for the VSI to improve the regulation of the grid voltage and frequency under uncertainties. It improves control results concerning the reduction of harmonics caused by sudden variations of the load and of powers exchanged with the grid. It allows preventing the phenomenon of chattering created by classical sliding mode technique. Extensive simulation studies are carried out under MATLAB/Simulink. They prove the effectiveness of the suggested droop and SMCs compared with the classical proportional-integral controller.

A modified super-twisting sliding mode control with inner feedback and adaptive gain schedule

In order to deal with the overestimation of matched uncertainty and improve the convergence of sliding variable in sliding mode control, a modified structure of super-twisting algorithm (STA) with inner feedback and adaptive gain schedule is presented in this paper. The foremost characteristic of the modified STA is that an inner feedback mechanism is built in the standard STA so as to regulate the dynamic behavior of sliding variable effectively. The damping effect produced by the inner feedback can restrain the overshoot and enhance the performance of faster convergence of the sliding variable. Furthermore, the adaptive gain schedule can effectively decrease the chattering amplitude without knowing the upper bound of uncertainty. The numerical simulations and experiments on DC servo system with low speed are carried out to validate the effectiveness and performance advantages of the proposed methodology. Improve hydrogen economy for vehicular fuel cell system via investigation and control of optimal operating oxygen excess ratio

This study investigates and controls the optimal operating oxygen excess ratio (OER) for PEMFC, which effectively prevents oxygen starvation and improves the hydrogen economy of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFC). Firstly, the PEMFC output characteristic model and the five-order nonlinear air supply system model are established. Moreover, an adaptive algebraic observer was developed to observe the partial pressure of gas in PEMFC and further reconstruct OER. Secondly, to achieve the minimum hydrogen consumption under the required power, the reference OER is determined by analyzing the PEMFC system output power with its minimum current. Finally, the super-twisting algorithm is adopted to track reference OER. Simulation results show that the average absolute observation errors of oxygen, nitrogen, and cathode pressures under the Highway Fuel Economy Test are 1351.1 Pa (5.1%), 1724.2 Pa (0.9%), and 409.9 Pa (1.6%), respectively. The OER adjust average absolute error is 0.03. Compared with the commonly used fixed OER (e.g., OER of 1.5 and 2.3), the optimal OER strategy can reduce the hydrogen consumption of the PEMFC system by 5.2% and 1.8%, respectively. Besides, a DSP hardware in loop test is conducted to show the real-time performance of the proposed optimal method. (c) 2022 Published by Elsevier Ltd. A composite position control of flexible lower limb exoskeleton based on second-order sliding mode

Aiming at the problem that the trajectory tracking error of flexible lower limb exoskeleton robot is too large under the condition of external disturbance and parameters uncertainty, a composite position control method based on second-order sliding mode control was proposed. Firstly, the flexible lower limb exoskeleton robot is modeled by Lagrange function. Secondly, considering that the system is affected not only by matched disturbance but also by unmatched disturbance, two finite time state observers are used to observe and compensate the two disturbances in real time. The super-twisting method is employed in the position control section to ensure that the trajectory tracking error of the knee joint converges to zero in finite time. Finally, the Lyapunov function proves the stability of the suggested control technique. The experimental findings reveal that the suggested control approach has a better trajectory tracking effect and resilience than classic PD control and sliding mode control, indicating its superiority.

Power management and second-order sliding mode control for standalone hybrid wind energy with battery energy storage system

The purpose of this article is to provide a high performance control of a renewable distributed generator to guarantee an electric power quality and jointly reduce the mechanical stress despite any possible uncertainties such as the random nature of wind speed, the presence of parameters uncertainties, and external perturbations acting on the system (sudden load variation). The renewable distributed generator integrating a wind generator associated with a batteries module is considered as an energy storage device and a variable load. The proposed method is designed by a power management supervisor and a sliding mode control technique. First, the power management supervisor is used to monitor the power flows transferred between the different system devices depending on the load variation and on the intermittency of wind production. In fact, it enables to ensure the balance at the continuous, Direct Current (DC) bus between the powers supplied by the renewable distributed generator and those demanded by the load. In addition, it prevents batteries from exceeding its maximum or minimum state of charge (SOCbat) by keeping it at an acceptable level [30%, 90%]. Second, a second-order sliding mode control based on the super-twisting algorithm is suggested to control the two subsystems (generator side and load side converters). The main target of the first one is to extract the maximum wind power taking into account the parameter variations and the fluctuating nature of wind. The second one is to investigate a second-order sliding mode control of active and reactive load power quantities, which provides better results in terms of attenuation of the harmonics present in the load voltage and current while considering the sudden load variations. In addition, a proportional-integral controller is also designed and simulated to establish a comparison framework. Distributed Fault-Tolerant Formation Control Design via High-Order Sliding Mode for a Team of Car-Like Vehicles

This study proposes a distributed fault-tolerant formation control scheme for a team of car-like vehicles with actuator faults. The proposed method includes a fault diagnostic scheme using a high-order sliding mode observer and a reconfigurable controller based on the super-twisting algorithm. The results showed that by the proposed controller, each vehicle can detect, diagnose, and accommodate actuator faults by itself. Two control strategies are proposed: 1) When a vehicle is exposed to a partial fault, the controller accommodates the fault and enables the vehicle to continue the mission with the rest of the team members in the formation. Furthermore, it allows healthy vehicles to re-adjust their motion and move in the way for compensating the reduced capability of the faulty vehicle with degraded performance in the formation mission;2) In severe fault conditions, the proposed controller excludes the faulty vehicle and re-assigns its task to the rest of the healthy members to complete the mission. The re-assignment task for the team formation is formulated as an optimal assignment problem and is solved by the Simplex algorithm. The experimental tests have been conducted on the latest Quanser self-driving car (QCar) platform to verify the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm and ensure its capability to avoid accidents between team members.

HOSMD and neural network based adaptive super-twisting sliding mode control for permanent magnet synchronous generators

To solve the maximum power tracking (MPT) control problem of the direct-driven wind power system, a super-twisting integral sliding mode controller with adaptive parameter estimation is designed. A high-order sliding mode differentiator is introduced as the virtual control variate filter, which solves the difficulty of obtaining the derivative of the control variate and the controller saturation in the nonlinear system with disturbances. Since the speed loop of permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) is susceptible to disturbances, a radial basis function neural network (RBFNN) approximator and its adaptive algorithm are proposed to observe the unmodeled part of the system and external disturbances. In addition, the super-twisting algorithm is introduced to improve the robust performance. An improved adaptive parameter estimation algorithm is used to obtain real-time estimated values in the circumstances of uncertain stator parameters and parameters perturbation during operation, which enhances control accuracy and reduces undesirable chatting. The errors of RBFNN approximation and parameter estimation are taken into Lyapunov functions to guarantee the stability of the whole system. The effect of the proposed scheme is verified as compared to the adaptive backstepping terminal and new reaching law sliding mode controllers. (c) 2022 The Author(s). Published by Elsevier Ltd. T-S fuzzy model-based robust finite time control for uncertain nonlinear systems

This paper presents novel Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy model-based robust finite time control methods for a class of uncertain nonlinear systems. First, the nonlinear system is approximated by a suitable T-S fuzzy model in which most of the parameters can be computed offline. Then, a T-S fuzzy model-based nonsingular terminal sliding mode control (TS-NTSMC) method is designed based on a proposed nonsingular terminal sliding mode (NTSM) surface. This method not only alleviates the online computational burden, but also preserves the advantages of fast and finite time convergence, high tracking precision, and robustness to uncertainties and disturbances. However, the discontinuous function sign[] causes the chattering phenomenon, which is unavoidable. In order to attenuate the chattering, maintain the key properties of the TS-NTSMC method and achieve higher control performance, a novel T-S fuzzy model-based super-twisting higher order nonsingular terminal sliding mode control (TS-STHONTSMC) method is proposed. The global finite time stability of the resulting closed-loop systems is analytically proven herein. Two numerical simulations are presented to illustrate the effectiveness and applicability of the proposed control methods and to validate the theoretical results.
