This paper deals with the design of super-twisting algorithm-based sliding-mode observer for uncertain nonlinear fractional-order system subject to unknown inputs. Fractional-order super-twisting algorithms (FSTA) are proposed for both commensurate and incommensurate fractional-order nonlinear systems. Then, step-by-step sliding-mode observers based on the FSTA are designed. Finite-time convergence and robustness are proven. Finally, application to the synchronization of two fractional-order chaotic systems is given.

The paper aims to discuss the issues of actuator saturation and external disturbance in the magnetic levitation (maglev) system. The proposed technique is composed of composite nonlinear feedback (CNF) and super-twisting algorithm (STA)-based integral sliding mode (ISM) control to tackle the problem of actuator saturation and external disturbances simultaneously. The composite nonlinear feedback scheme comprises of linear feedback law which provides stability and fast response whereas the nonlinear feedback law takes care of input saturation and reduces the overshoot. The super-twisting algorithm (STA)-based integral sliding mode (ISM) controller is designed for disturbance rejection. A super-twisting algorithm-based approach is applied on ISM scheme to eliminate the chattering effect and make it continuous in nature for its direct implementation to the physical maglev system. The designed scheme is successfully tested on real-time feedback instruments model of the maglev system.

This paper develops a super-twisting., algorithm controller via a nonlinear disturbance observer for a DC motor system subject to matched and unmatched uncertainties. The proposed controller is based upon a novel Nonlinear Disturbance Observer structure which uses the concept of total disturbance estimation in order to estimate simultaneously the matched and the unmatched uncertainties in the system. This estimation is incorporated then in a composite observer based controller where the stability analysis is given. Simulations results illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed controller compared to other some existing control designs and show its advantages in terms of disturbance rejection, nominal performance recovery and chattering reduction. This work is about computing the robust control for tumors growth. This control law is developed using the super-twisting algorithm. It is based on the sliding modes approach, with appropriate choices for the control law expressions. As an improved version of the twisting algorithm, it has been introduced in order to minimize the shattering phenomenon, to allow the outputs to converge in a reasonable amount of time. It also deals with the need of some data that are hard to obtain in practice. The mathematical model of the tumor, as we refer to it as the system, is based on the phases of the cell cycle, where three compartments are considered. The control law is computed and simulated using real data. The system responded in a robust way regarding the modeling and the measurements errors, and the cells concentrations decreased considerably, according to the simulations results.

To enhance the reliability of in-wheel motors, it is crucial to avoid failures in the motors, sensors and the motor drives. However, in-wheel motor structures formed on permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs) and voltage source inverter (VSI) using pulse-width modulation (PWM) are fragile to power-converter component faults such as power switches. Furthermore, switching device faults accrue in the form of open circuits or short circuits. An open circuit fault imposes phase voltage imbalances to each phase voltage. This paper presents a new approach to detect the imbalanced phase voltage due to the open-circuit fault in the inverters employing a super-twisting algorithm-based sliding mode observer. The combination of proposed observer with the Extended Kalman filter (EKF) results in a robust observer which can be used under the noisy measurement conditions that are unavoidable in industrial applications. In addition, the simulated observer applies a model-based fault detection algorithm, enabling the fault to be isolated more easily and reliably than when using signal processing methods.

As one of the most common step-down DC-DC switching power converters, Buck converters with the simple structure and easy control are widely applied to the fuel cell electric vehicles. In order to reduce chattering phenomenon which is inherent in conventional sliding mode control and solve the problem of slower convergence rate of the linear sliding surface, this paper presents a novel super-twisting algorithm based on the fast terminal sliding surface (STA+FTSS) strategy on basis of the super-twisting algorithm based on the linear sliding surface (STA+LSS) by adding the nonlinear term to LSS. Comparisons of numerical simulation results between the STA+LSS and the STA+FTSS are presented and discussed for various test conditions such as steady state, input voltage variations, output load disturbance and uncertainness in circuit parameter. It is worth to note that the proposed controller has a better performance related to the STA+LSS in terms of the transient response time and robustness to the disturbance.

The super-twisting algorithm is employed to control the voltage of a Bidirectional DC-to-DC Converter of an on-board propulsion system in presence of large load variations. The Bidirectional DC-to-DC Converter is modeled using average value modeling, and it is shown by an alternative approach that the zero dynamics for the converter topology supplying a Constant Power Load are unstable with the DC bus voltage as output, and stable for the inductor current as output. Here, a derivation of the controller gains is presented based on the average model of the system. The gains are described with respect to the inductor current and its bounded perturbations. The performance of the proposed controller is compared to a conventional cascaded PI controller, and exhibits strong robustness with respect to external system variations. This study presents a second-order sliding mode controller (2-SMC) for PI-controlled refrigeration system whose relative degree is one. 2-SMC is an effective tool for control of uncertain nonlinear system since it overcomes chattering phenomenon of the classical first-order sliding mode controller (1-SMC) and guarantees higher accuracy in presence of system imperfections. super-twisting algorithm is used to design 2-SMC. This algorithm has been developed for the case of systems with relative degree one to avoid chattering phenomenon. By using this super-twisting algorithm-based 2-SMC, we control superheat ratio of refrigeration system. We compare 2-SMC with 1-SMC and backstepping controller which are designed for the same target system. The proposed controller eliminates chattering phenomenon, main drawback of 1-SMC, and reduces steady state error of 1-SMC. Compared with backstepping controller, presented controller is much more robust at external noise.

This paper presents an adaptive conditioning-technique-based super-twisting algorithm aiming at improving the convergence speed and reducing the overshoot at the same time. Compared with a recently proposed method called new modified super-twisting algorithm, in which a linear acceleration factor and a damping factor are added to achieve this goal, the proposed method has several advantages. First, the proposed method enhances the convergence performance of the system by resorting to the characteristics of the conditioned super-twisting algorithm and the adaptive gains, without changing the basic structure of the classical super-twisting controller. Thus, stability proof of this method is much simpler and more concise. Furthermore, unlike the new modified super-twisting algorithm, in which an unnatural assumption on the Lipschitz disturbance is made for the stability proof, this method can counteract not only typical bounded Lipschitz disturbances but also square-root growth disturbances. Also, a set of less conservative control gains can be obtained with the proposed algorithm than with the compared algorithm. Apart from these benefits, several simulation results illustrate that the performance of the proposed method is even better in convergence and recovering from disturbance.

The paper is concerned with the stability of an uncertain system with quantization by using super twisting controller. Both uniform and logarithmic quantization schemes are considered. Our main discovery is that the trajectories are always bounded with static uniform quantization scheme and are globally finite-time stable with logarithmic quantization scheme. Furthermore, a dynamic uniform quantization scheme is proposed to eliminate quantization errors. Simulation examples are given to shown the effectiveness of the proposed design approach.
