superposition coding relaying (SC-relaying) has the merit of high throughput. At the same time, the investigation of diversity-multiplexing tradeoff (DMT) is also particularly useful for the design and analysis of cooperative relaying strategy. In this work, we consider a two-level rate SC-relaying strategy with only destination-to-relay channel state feedback (DR-CSF) under a long term power constraint. For the SCrelaying strategy with DR-CSF, the allocation rules of relay power SNR exponent are obtained firstly. With the power exponent allocation rules, the DMT of additional signal is investigated as well as its optimizing close-form solution.

URLLC services are very demanding in terms of quality of service (QoS). We study in this paper dual-connectivity as an enabler for ultra reliability and specifically consider combining 4G and 5G spectrum for delivering URLLC packets. We compare different dual connectivity schemes, including a best link selection scheme and a maximum ratio combining scheme. We consider first an outdoor scenario with users served by macro base stations, where 4G and 5G transmitters are co-localized, and show that ultra-reliability is difficult to achieve everywhere unless the network is densified, or packets are replicated. We then study an industry 4.0 scenario where UEs are localized within a factory and served by indoor 5G small cells, in addition to coverage from outdoor 4G base stations, and show that URLLC requirements are achievable in this scenario.

This paper considers the layered transmission between the source and the destination over two relays using superposition coding (SC). In this two-hop decode-and-forward (DF) relaying system, because of the network topology, the receiver continuously decodes only the base layer of the direct transmission from the source;the enhancement layer is decoded with a delay based on the transmission from one of the two relays sending and receiving in alternate time slots. Alternate relaying improves the spectral efficiency of the scheme, however it causes inter-relay interference (IRI), which may limit the system performance if not mitigated. To allow the proper data recovery at the relays and at the destination, we have designed successive interference cancellation decoding schemes that consider different power allocations to the base and enhancement layers. Specifically, based on the channel gains between different transmitter-receiver pairs, the transmissions from the source and the relays are aligned in time and power as to optimize the system throughput. Finally, based on the analytical derivations and simulations, we present numerical results for capacity improvements in the proposed scheme over the existing schemes.

We study the layered transmission of a Gaussian source over multiple relays using superposition coding. First, we analyze the outage probability and performance in terms of average throughput and distortion for decode-and-forward protocols with single layer and superposed two-layer coding. For the superposition coding approach, we consider different power allocations to the base and enhancement layers. Then, we propose a simple protocol which assigns a pre-determined number of relays to individual layers instead of repeating the superposition coded source packet at the relay. Finally, we present numerical results based on the analysis to compare the performance.

It is well known in information theory that superposition coding is an optimal technique for providing a single transmission that both provides a high data rate when channel conditions are good and still provides some information when the channel conditions are poor (perhaps due to jamming). Typical superposition coding schemes for the additive white Gaussian noise channel combine signals after the modulator. For modulation schemes such as GMSK, this standard form of (additive) superposition is not acceptable because it does not maintain a constant envelope. This paper introduces a new approach in which newly designed nonlinear codes allow superposition to take place before the GMSK modulation. These codes are demonstrated to operate very close to the boundary of the achievable rate region for the broadcast binary symmetric channel which would result from GMSK transmission with hard decoding. The results also suggest that similarly optimal performance might be obtainable in the soft decoding regime.

A novel cooperative transmission scheme based on superposition coding and partial relaying

This paper considered the single relay system and proposed a novel repetition coding decode-and-forward (DF) cooperative transmission scheme on the basis of superposition coding and partial relaying. In the proposed scheme, the link disparity due to the geometry of the relay network is emphasized, and only a fraction of the information is transmitted in relay mode with the rest being transmitted directly, which benefits from the utility of superposition coding (SC) in broadcast situation. The proposed scheme is analyzed in two cases, one assumes full channel state information at the source (full CSIS), the other with only mean gain of each link known by the source (partial CSIS). For both cases, the optimal design of system parameters is considered. We investigate the achievable rate and expected rate performance for these two cases, respectively. The proposed schemed is well compared with conventional repetition coding DF, parallel coding DF, as well as another promising superposition coding relaying. It is concluded that, by designing protocols that orients to certain network geometry, better trade-off between performance and complexity can be obtained. The analysis reveals that the gap between conventional repetition and parallel coding is largely mitigated by the proposed scheme, quite for the scenario that the relay locates relatively but not extremely closer to the source, at moderate SNR regime for both partial and full CSIS cases. The proposed scheme becomes more beneficial in severe path loss attenuation scenario. Copyright (c) 2013 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Linear Beamforming and superposition coding with Common Information for the Gaussian MIMO Broadcast Channel

A Gaussian multiple-input multiple-output broadcast channel (MIMO GBC) is considered. Throughout the paper it is assumed that 1) input signals are Gaussian and 2) perfect channel state information is available at the transmitter and at the receivers. By considering each data stream as a single user, the uplink-downlink signal-to-interference-plus-noise (SINR) duality is generalized to the MIMO case with general cross-talk matrix. The duality is subsequently applied to finding the solution for the SINR-balancing problem. The result serves as a tool for characterizing achievable rate regions of different coding strategies. Next, we investigate a superposition coding scheme proposed by Cover-van der Meulen-Hajek and Pursley (nicknamed CMHP [1]), where there is a common message to both users. We consider a MIMO broadcast channel with two users, each user has two antennas and the transmitter has four antennas. Assuming one common stream is sent by CMHP coding and successive decoding, a lower bound to the CMHP rate region is found. Behaviors of the CMHP rate region and sumrate are analyzed. We find the sumrate gaps between DPC, CMHP, and MMSE at high SNR for general 2-user multiple-input single-output (MISO) Gaussian broadcast channel. The result suggests when CMHP is beneficial for sumrate.

Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) has a larger achievable sum rate than orthogonal multiple access (OMA). This superiority is achieved via superposition coding (SC) and successive interference cancellation (SIC). In this letter, the authors propose a lossless NOMA implementation without SIC. This implementation is achieved via correlated SC (CSC), in contrast to conventional independent SC (ISC). In addition, correlated non-SIC decoding is performed, in contrast to conventional SIC decoding. Using the random channel coding theorem, we prove that the conditional achievable sum rate given channel gain realizations in the conventional ISC/SIC NOMA scheme can be achieved without SIC, without loss, over the power allocation range of user-fairness.

This letter deals with optimal power allocation between unicast and multicast messages in a wireless relay-multicasting network using superposition coding. A so-called multicast-balancing solution is provided and proved to be optimal, which maximizes the sum of data rates received at multiple destinations. And its optimality is also verified by numerical investigation. The proposed solution is a generalized version of the unicast-balancing solution that is optimal for a wireless relay system with only a single destination.

Fronthaul-aware superposition coding for noncoherent transmission in C-RAN downlink

Cloud radio access network (C-RAN) has arisen as a promising architecture for the 5G wireless communication system. Among many advantages, C-RAN is known to enable large-scale interference management by migrating baseband processing functionalities from radio units (RUs) to a control unit (CU) with the aid of fronthaul links. Most of literatures prescribe that perfect synchronization is available among distributed RUs and fronthaul links are equipped with infinite capacities. Since these assumptions are far from practical situations, this work proposes a more practical noncoherent transmission strategy, in which synchronization is not needed among the RUs, by means of a novel superposition, or broadcast, coding. Under the proposed superposition coding scheme, the problem of maximizing the weighted sum of per-user achievable rates is tackled while satisfying per-RU transmit power and fronthaul capacity constraints. Some numerical results are provided to validate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.
