In this paper, achievable rates regions are derived for power constrained Gaussian broadcast channel of two users using finite dimension constellations. Various transmission strategies are studied, namely superposition coding (SC) and superposition modulation (SM) and compared to standard schemes such as time sharing (TS). The maximal achievable rates regions for SM and SC strategies are obtained by optimizing over both the joint probability distribution and over the positions of constellation symbols. The improvement in achievable rates for each scheme of increasing complexity is evaluated in terms of SNR savings for a given target achievable rate or/and percentage of gain in achievable rates for one user with reference to a classical scenario.

In this paper, we study the discrete memory Multiple Access Wiretap Channel (DM-MAWC) with one common message and non-causal side information. In this channel, two transmitters send a common message to the receivers, meanwhile they both transmit an individual confidential message, which must be kept secret from the second receiver (viewed as a wiretapper) to the first receiver. As the side information is non-causally available at the transmitters, we derive the achievable perfect secrecy capacity region for the MAWC with one common message and non-casual side information available at the transmitters by using Cover's superposition coding and Gelfand-Pinsker random binning coding schemes. The achievable secrecy capacity region of this paper subsumes the region of multiple access wiretap channel with or without common message and without side information as its special cases.

We propose a cognitive relaying protocol with primary multicasting systems, where a primary transmitter broadcasts a common message to K licensed primary receivers. It typically adjusts its transmission rate to the user suffering from the worst channel condition in order to serve all the users simultaneously. In the limit of a large number of multicast receivers, cooperation is shown to effectively overcome this problem. In this paper, an unlicensed secondary system acts as a relay for the primary receivers. Furthermore, the secondary system achieves spectrum sharing by superimposing the secondary transmission on primary signals. We show that there exists a power allocation threshold above which the cognitive relaying protocol is able to provide better (or at least an equal) outage performance for the primary system and, at the same time, to enable the secondary system to have an opportunity to access the spectrum.

We consider a cooperative cognitive radio network with one primary user and many secondary users. In each transmission frame, one secondary user is selected to act as a relay for the primary user and also transmits its own data. Three different schemes for the secondary user's transmission is studied, namely, time-splitting, superposition coding, and a combined scheme that takes advantages of both time-splitting and superposition coding schemes. We formulate the relay selection problem for each scheme with the objective of maximizing the secondary user's data rate while satisfying a pre-defined gain threshold for the primary user. This constraint provides an incentive for the primary user when allowing the secondary user access its licensed band. We obtain the optimal solution for this problem in each scheme, on which the relay selection is based on. Finally, we compare the performance of different schemes using Monte-Carlo simulations.

The capacity of the AWGN broadcast is achieved by superposition coding, but superposition of individual coded modulations does not in general obey a predefined constellation. We propose a coded modulation broadcast with strict channel-input modulation constraint via multilevel coding (MLC). For a degraded broadcast channel, conditions of optimality of the multilevel decomposition of a superposition code are derived. Furthermore, a constructive scheme is proposed that simplifies the superposition multilevel code and facilitates the design process, by reducing the inter-dependencies between the levels of the two component codes, and yet achieves rates very close to the constellation constrained capacity. Simulation results on several modulations verify the operation of the proposed coding scheme at or near the constellation constrained capacity.

The paper investigates the scenario of wireless multicast with a single transmitter and multiple relays that jointly deliver successively refined (or multi-resolution) sources to multiple receivers. An asynchronous cooperative joint source-channel coding (JSCC) protocol is proposed, which can mitigate the complexity and difficulty in signal synchronization under the wireless multicast with cooperative relays. By considering the end-to-end mean square error distortion (EED), the problems of JSCC multicast are formulated to minimize the total power consumption by jointly selecting proper relays and the power allocations at the base station as well as the selected relays. To solve the formulated problem that is nonetheless nonlinear in nature, a two-step iterative algorithm is investigated for power allocations at all transmitters. Case studies are conducted to demonstrate the advantages of using the proposed JSCC in a relay-assisted multi-resolution wireless multicast network.

A novel cooperative transmission protocol is proposed for multiple access scenarios, where multiple users communicate with a common destination with the assistant of multiple half-duplex relays. The proposed alternative relaying decode-and-forward (ARDF) protocol can achieve the full diversity gain by applying superposition coding at each transmitter, which also utilizes the linear zero-forcing detection at each relay to combat a serious inter-relay interference. Different to the previous uplink protocols, the proposed protocol can exploit the cooperation involving both the relays and sources, which guarantees the proposed scheme to approach the optimal multiple-input single-output upper bound even with general inter-relay interference. Analytical and numerical results have been provided to demonstrate the performance of the proposed protocol.

Non Orthogonal Multiple Access (NOMA) is a promising technique for fifth generation (5G) wireless cellular networks with the aim to achieve capacity goals and better performance. Generally, power domain NOMA is tested for two user equipment (UE) based systems. Capacity improvement of NOMA system with accurate power allocation is a key challenge. To meet this challenge, different techniques are been introduced. In this paper, basic NOMA model with two users is extended for multiple users to achieve higher capacity. We implement NOMA with three and four UE's, where superposition coding is introduced at the transmitter side and Successive Interference Cancellation (SIC) at the receiving end. With increased number of NOMA users, a crucial problem is to accurately allocate transmit powers for all the users. A main contribution of this paper is the selection of accurate power allocation and modulation schemes based on BER performance. Furthermore, the proposed multiuser NOMA scheme is simulated in 5G path loss model namely NYUSIM Channel Model. This paper provides foundation of accurate power allocation mechanisms for NOMA based systems in the future.

In this paper, we propose a design framework for achieving efficient multimedia multicast services in cognitive radio (CR) networks. The framework incorporates the characteristics of both heterogeneous network environment and the scalable video content. By adopting cooperative transmissions for the delivery of enhancement layer data, we can not only improve the achieved video quality but also protect the rights of subscribed secondary users. We also utilize network coding and superposition coding to achieve efficient multicast transmissions of the layered video packets in multi-channel CR networks. Numerical examples show the proposed framework can improve the average received data rate by up to 15%. When achieving the same video quality, the proposed framework can save 30% transmission time comparing with the scenario using direct transmission alone.

Fundamental limits of the cognitive interference channel (CIC) with two pairs of transmitter-receiver have been under exploration for several years. In this paper, we study the discrete memoryless cognitive interference channel (DMCIC) in which the cognitive transmitter non-causally knows the full message of the primary transmitter. The capacity of this channel is not known in general;it is only known in some special cases. Inspired by the concept of less noisy broadcast channel (BC), in this work we introduce the notion of less noisy cognitive interference channel. Unlike BC, due to the inherent asymmetry of the cognitive channel, two different less noisy channels are distinguishable;these are named the primary-less-noisy and cognitive-less-noisy channels. We derive capacity region for the latter case by introducing inner and outer bounds on the capacity of the DM-CIC and showing that these bounds coincide for the cognitive-less-noisy channel. Having established the capacity region, we prove that superposition coding is the optimal encoding technique.
