The multi-objective optimal control design usually generates hundreds or thousands of Pareto optimal solutions. How to assist an user to select an appropriate controller to implement is a post processing issue. In this paper, we develop a method of cluster analysis of the Pareto optimal designs to discover the similarity of the optimal controllers. After we identify the clusters of optimal controllers, we then develop a switching strategy to select controls from different clusters to improve the performance. Numerical results show that the switching control algorithm is quite promising.

Mixture experiments have attracted increasingly attention due to their great practical value in production and living, while uniform designs over irregular experimental regions have become a hot topic in the area of experimental designs in the past two decades. Noting that the experimental region of a mixture experiment with q components under some constraints is in fact a (q - 1)-dimensional geometry, this article proposes a new method for searching nearly uniform designs for mixture experiments with any complex constraints. Two examples with some tables and figures are given to illustrate this method.

Pre-charge solution for low-power, area-efficient SAR ADC

In this paper, a new method is proposed to reduce the power consumption and occupied area of successive-approximation register analog to digital converters (SAR ADCs). The proposed solution is based on pre-charged capacitor array consisting of identical unit capacitors. According to the new method, switching operations to determine the least significant bits are replaced by adding pre-charged capacitors to the main capacitor array. This method is applicable for binary-weighted capacitor arrays with different switching schemes. With the presented method, switching energy and the number of unit capacitors are reduced by at least 50%.

Congestion in traffic is a serious problem nowadays. Although it seems to pervade everywhere, mega cities are the ones most affected by it. And it's ever increasing nature makes it imperative to know the road traffic density in real time for better signal control and effective traffic management. There can be different causes of congestion in traffic like insufficient capacity, unrestrained demand, large Red Light delays etc. While insufficient capacity and unrestrained demand are somewhere interrelated, the delay of respective light is hard coded and not dependent on traffic. Therefore the need for simulating and optimizing traffic control to better accommodate this increasing demand arises. In recent years, video monitoring and surveillance systems have been widely used in traffic management for traveler's information, ramp metering and updates in real time. The traffic density estimation and vehicle classification can also be achieved using video monitoring systems. This paper presents the method to use live video feed from the cameras at traffic junctions for real time traffic density calculation using video and image processing. It also focuses on the algorithm for switching the traffic lights according to vehicle density on road, thereby aiming at reducing the traffic congestion on roads which will help lower the number of accidents. In turn it will provide safe transit to people and reduce fuel consumption and waiting time. It will also provide significant data which will help in future road planning and analysis. In further stages multiple traffic lights can be synchronized with each other with an aim of even less traffic congestion and free flow of traffic.

This paper deals with dynamic Multi-Vehicle Routing Problem in both deterministic and stochastic scenarios;the objective is to find the best paths for a fleet of vehicles, with the aim of visiting a set of targets. Based on the Cooperative Receding Horizon approach proposed in [4] for the Euclidean case, this paper i) develop a routing algorithm for graph-represented mission spaces, ii) presents a switching algorithm, which is able to dynamically change the vehicle behaviour according to the time-variable configuration of both vehicles and targets, as well as to handle the discovery of unknown targets. Simulations show the algorithm effectiveness.

Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to design the control for a new type of DC converter that can be used in low voltage and low power DC drives, e.g. in cars and robots. Design/methodology/approach - Based on the theory of the switching systems, the existence condition of the limit cycle for the novel DC/DC converter is formulated. Findings - The feed forward control which realizes the limit cycle is designed. The first experimental results show that the designed control of the DC/DC converter is effective in solving the control problem of DC drives and allows the use of a low input voltage as power source for the standard DC drive. Originality/value - Today DC/DC converters play a key role in power conversion and distribution. The presented DC/DC converter has a very simple circuit and allows changing the output voltage in the wide range that is needed for the DC drive control.

With the advance of hardware technology, more features are incrementally added to already existing networked systems. Avionics has a stronger tendency to use preexisting applications due to its complexity and scale. As resource sharing becomes intense among the network and the computing modules, it has become a difficult task for the system designer to make confident architectural decisions even for incremental changes. Providing a tailored environment to model and analyze incremental changes requires a combination of software tools and hardware support. We have built a virtual integration tool called ASIIST which can provide a worst-case end-to-end latency of data that is sent through a network and the internal bus architecture of the end-systems. Also, we have devised a new real-time switching algorithm which guarantees the worst-case network delay of preexisting network traffic under feasible conditions. With the real-time switch support, ASIIST can provide an early modularized analysis of the end-to-end latency to make architectural design choices and incremental changes easier for the user.

A Novel switching algorithm to Balance Conduction Losses in Power Semiconductor Devices of Multi-level Cascade Inverters

The power loss in switching devices plays an important role in the design of static converters. The power dissipated during the on-state of semiconductor switches (conduction loss) is a substantial portion of the total switch losses, especially in low-frequency converters. Conduction loss may differ in switches of the converter due to the difference in duration and amount of currents flowing through them. This is, in turn, the result of dissimilar switching signals applied to the switches. To optimize the converter design, it is important to equalize the conduction losses of all main switches. To balance conduction losses in full-bridge and multi-level cascade inverters, a novel switching method is proposed in this article, and its effectiveness and validity is examined by computer simulation results and experimental works.

This paper presents a novel approach of image interpolation based on the switching of new edge directed interpolation (NEDI) and single pass interpolation algorithm (SPIA) and switching is based upon the % of edges present in the blocks of the image. The switching of this interpolation algorithm is block based instead of image based or pixel based. Imperially we found that NEDI methods is better applicable for smoother images (variation among the pixels is less) while SPIA method works better on detailed images (more variation among the pixels), because of the type of pixels used in the process interpolation. So, a hybrid scheme of combining NEDI method and SPIA method is used for better prediction of HR image. The proposed algorithm produces the better results for different varieties of images in terms of both PSNR measurement and subjective visual quality with low computational complexity as compare to recently developed interpolation algorithms.
