A switched Nonlinear Model Predictive Control (NMPC) strategy for time efficient energy control of railway vehicles, while fulfilling constraints on velocity, journey time and driving style in a collaborative fashion (collaborative eco-drive) is proposed. More specifically, the train dynamics are modeled as discrete, switched and nonlinear, while the optimization variable is the handle position which modulates the available traction/braking force and has to belong to a set of discrete values and/or operating modes, which the human driver is able to implement. Hence the aim is to choose the optimal handle position that minimizes the cost, is implementable by the driver and also fulfills the eco-driving objective, such that the driving style is constrained by predefined driving sequences. A supervisor detects the states of the trains and subsequently modifies the weights of the cost by negotiating between constraint satisfaction and control aggressiveness, in order to share the available regenerated braking energy among the connected trains in a substation network. Bit rates in flat-fading OFDM wireless systems can be improved through the use of Adaptive Modulation and Coding (AMC). In this paper, we propose two practical, efficient link adaptation algorithms that use fixed link tables defined by SNR ranges for supported spectral efficiencies. The purpose is to design non-iterative algorithms with acceptable performance and reduced computational complexity relative to the alternative iterative solutions. Our simulations indicate that the proposed algorithms come within 3 dB of the spectral efficiency of the optimal Water-Filling AMC method and 2 dB of the BL-AMC model, but with significantly reduced computational complexity.

Modern domestic heating systems combine conventional heat sources with more advanced devices such as heat pumps or energy storages. Due to the existence of multiple sources and sinks, the question arises, how to operate these systems in an economically optimal fashion. It is natural to pose this question as an optimal control problem that is solved on a receding horizon, where the receding horizon allows to account for periodically updated predictions of the heat demand and energy prices. These periodic updates imply, however, the optimal control problem has time-variant constraints and a time-variant cost function. We demonstrate the resulting receding horizon optimal control scheme can be solved and optimizes the heat flows in a domestic heating system that comprises a heat pump, a thermal storage and an auxiliary heater. Our results show the predictive controller is able to anticipate and compensate for heat shortages due to heat pump blocking times. The paper deals with the algorithm named as pre-identification, which denotes the simple general identification algorithm used for the system identification. The identification is realized before the system is controlled. It can be used in case the controlled system is time-invariant or slightly time-variant. Furthermore, the, identified system might be nonlinear. Pre-identification provides a priori system description which is necessary for switching self-tuning control or useful for nonlinear control. The verification of the pre- identification usefulness was realized oil several laboratory apparatuses in real-time using PC.

PID control schemes have been widely used in most process systems represented by chemical processes for a long time. However, it is still a very important problem how to determine or tune the PID parameters, because these parameter have a great influence on the stability and the performance of the control system. On the other hand, it is well known that the generalized predictive controller(GPC) is effective for systems with ambiguous time-delays and/or time-variant time-delays. Then, the PID parameters adjusting method based on GPC has been proposed. In this paper, a new tuning algorithm of PID parameters based on GPC is proposed, which is conposed of an adaptive switching scheme and some robust PID sub-controllers switched by the former according to a certain property of the controlled object. Finally, the proposed control scheme is investigated on a numerical simulation example.

The problem of rejection of a sinusoidal disturbance with unknown frequency acting on an unknown single-input-single-output stable linear system is addressed in this paper. We present a new hybrid approach that does not require knowledge of the frequency response of the transfer function over the range of frequencies of interest. The proposed controller reposes upon a switching strategy within a family of linear controllers based on the adaptive feedforward / internal model control methodology. A dead-beat frequency estimation method is integrated in the controller. The method also accounts for the presence of bounded sensor noise as well as imprecise frequency estimation. It is shown that, within a finite number of switchings, the regulation error is ultimately bounded by a function of the norm of the noise that depends on the choice of the controller and the estimator gains. This paper deals with control algorithms development for output stabilization of the parametrically uncertain linear plant of unknown relative degree. Simple adaptive control paradigm lies in the basis of proposed approach. Controller was supplemented with the switching-based scheme of substitution of multiharmonic external disturbance frequencies' estimations that improves controller performance without its significant complication. Stability analysis of the closed-loop hybrid system was conducted and corresponding conditions on switching parameters were stated.

The present study considers a hybrid controller scheme for the optimal switching of a moving (or scanning) actuator (MA) for a class of distributed parameter systems (DPS). The proposed hybrid controller switches both the location and control signal of the actuator at the beginning of a time interval and remains unchanged over the duration of the time-interval. As time progresses, the above policy is repeated over a sequence of “time windows”, thus generating an algorithmic procedure which results in the actuator/controller switching policy. Guiding the MA at certain a priori selected actuator positions at different time-intervals is made possible by solving a double optimization problem. The decision method for actuator switching utilizes a finite-horizon LQR optimal control policy and, using optimality criteria, the associated optimal control problem is solved backwards-in-time for several time subintervals. A numerical example with simulation results is presented.

Immediate Manual-Automatic Vehicle Control Transitions based on Dynamic Initial Conditioning

With more vehicle control systems providing partial or more complete automatic control functions in passenger vehicles, it is necessary to ensure smooth and immediate transitions between driver's manual control and automated control. This paper presents a novel switching method for achieving immediate and smooth manual-automatic vehicle control transitions. An open-loop dynamic initial conditioning module is added to the existing closed-loop automatic steering control to provide suitable references to the automatic steering controller. This open-loop dynamic initial conditioning is designed as a vehicle regulation control with gains and bandwidth lower than the automatic steering controller so as to achieve immediate, smooth transitions. Moreover, as the reference converges to zero, the overall automatic steering control system naturally becomes the original automatic steering control without any explicit transition. The proposed method was implemented in a test vehicle and test runs with over 250 switches in 300 seconds up to 140 km/h were conducted. The test results demonstrate that the proposed design has achieved immediate and smooth transitions between manual control and automated control.
