Fault location using the distributed parameter transmission line model

Earlier work at Texas A&M University led to the development of transmission line fault location algorithms that were based on synchronized sampling of the voltage and current data from the two ends of the line. The Line models used in the algorithms were based on lumped parameter models for electrically short lines, or lossless distributed parameter models for electrically long lines, In this paper, the lossless line model is modified to account for the series losses in the line. The line model equations are then solved in the time domain to accurately locate the fault, Testing of the modified algorithm is performed on a power system belonging to the Western Area Power Administration. Extensive EMTP based simulations are used to generate data that are supplied as inputs to the fault location algorithm. To make the testing as realistic as possible, detailed models of instrument transformers are used in the simulation of the various fault cases.

A new type of differential feeder protection relay using the global positioning system for data synchronization

This paper describes a new technique for sampling synchronisation in a numerical differential feeder protection relay. The protection uses a Global Positioning System satellite receiver for sampling synchronization at each end of the protected feeder. The EMTP/ATP power system simulator was used to simulate a typical distribution feeder with faults at various locations. The current signals generated at both ends of feeder were used to evaluate the performance of the protection. These tests were carried out using a protection simulator. The results illustrate the effect of current transformer saturation on the sensitivity and stability of the protection. Finally it is shown that a precisely synchronized differential protection is fast, selective and accurate. On an internal fault it provides a high operating sensitivity, whilst it remains stable on all external faults.

This paper proposes an integrated real time fault analysis tool for transmission line. The two primary techniques used in the fault analysis tool, fuzzy adaptive resonance theory (ART) neural network and synchronized sampling, can offer accurate fault detection, classification, internal/external fault differentiation, and fault location. The paper makes several extensions of the two techniques so that they can fit well in the realistic situations. The hardware configuration and software implementation are proposed in the paper. A comprehensive evaluation study is implemented to compare the proposed fault analysis tool with the traditional distance relay. Simulation results indicate that the integration exemplifies the advantages of both techniques and that the integrated solution has much better performance in different system conditions compared to distance relay. Both dependability and security of transmission line protection system are improved by using the proposed tool. (C) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The sampled value mapping model and realization method of Merging Unit(MU) is analyzed in this paper. By using synchronized sampling technology, Analog AC signals from traditional PTCT are constructed into a sampled value mapping which defined in IEC60044-7/8 and IEC61850-9-1. So the basic IEC61850 data is established for traditional substations. The test method for MU is proposed and verified. Three sample units have been developed. Tests show that all technical parameters are credible and accurate.

Several major blackouts were caused by distance relay mis-operation. Distance relay mis-operation may occur following a large disturbance in the system causing power swing and out-of-step conditions. If an on-line fault analysis tool is able to detect power swing or out-of-step conditions and indicate mis-operation of relays, the operator may be notified to switch back the healthy transmission lines tripped due to relay mis-operation. A new automated fault analysis tool comprising fault detection, classification and location has been developed and its performance under various power swing and out-of-step conditions is reported. The test results indicate that the fault analysis tool performs better than distance relay under power swing and out of-step conditions and can be used as a tool to verify distance relay operation in practical circumstances. The simulations have been performed using IEEE118 bus test system modeled in ATP software.

This paper describes a newly developed digital current differential protection for transmission lines, the proposed protection is different from existing ones in two aspects: one is using GPS time information to implement synchronized sampling at all terminals of the protected line. Another is the application pf new differential algorithm based on fault component instantaneous value. To evaluate the performance of the protection, both the EMTP simulation study on the new algorithm and the dynamic simulation test on the prototype of the protection are conducted. The test results have proved the correctness of the new algorithm and the feasibility of the whole protection scheme.,This paper starts with brief introduction to overall configuration of the protection, then focuses on description for principles of GPS based synchronized sampling and the new differential algorithm. The simulation results are also presented.

In the paper a new numerical algorithm for fault distance calculation and fault analysis is presented. The algorithm improves up to date solutions with regard to the fault location, adaptive autoreclosure, detailed disturbance records analysis, and fault data management. It is based on two terminal line currents and voltages acquisition. For this purposes the synchronized sampling of all analogue input variables is assumed. The algorithm presented is derived in spectral domain and based on the application of the Discrete Fourier Transform. In the paper the electrical arc is considered as a source of higher harmonics. These are included in the complete fault model, which was starting point for the development of the new algorithm. One of sophisticated algorithm features is its ability to determine both the arc and the fault resistance. The algorithm is tested through computer based simulation of an overhead line connected to two active networks.

The interface presented in this paper performs a synchronized sampling of all eight common-mode or differential analog inputs with a high sampling rate. This is a low cost interface, entirely controlled by the PC104 CPU. The paper is focused on design and operation aspects of the synchronized analog-to-digital conversion module. This interface is recommended for high speed data acquisition systems and finds its utility in energetic systems, for monitoring the power quality and for recording different specific transient events. Some programmable electronic modules which perform analog and digital signal acquisition in energetic systems already contain a PC104 interface with synchronized sampling of analog inputs;some experimental results are also presented in this paper.

A new adaptive numerical algorithm for overhead line protection is presented in this paper. It uses an advanced fault model taking into account the arcing phenomena at the fault location and an efficient parameter estimation technique. A dynamic arc model is included in fault modelling to represent the arc interaction with the transmission system. Performance of the proposed estimation technique is extensively verified at different arc model parameters. The algorithm is derived in the time domain and it is based on synchronized acquisition of currents and voltages at both line terminals. It is tested through computer-based simulations of a line connecting two active networks.

A WSN is envisaged to consist of a large number of nodes, each combining sensing, processing and wireless communication capabilities. The nodes have to cooperate to achieve a global function required by the user. Towards achieving this goal, multiple tasks are performed on all nodes or a subset of nodes in the network. The subject of this paper is the synchronized execution of periodic tasks at different nodes, for example: sensing tasks or a periodic on/off switching of radio transceivers. The method is based on synchronizing timer interrupt occurrences at different nodes to a single reference, leading to tight synchronization of tasks over nodes. Measurements show that task synchronization is achieved on our hardware platform with an average time difference of 5 mu s between the starts of temporally related tasks on different nodes.
