Power quality improvement in distribution network using DSTATCOM with battery energy storage system

The distribution static compensator (DSTATCOM) provides fast control of active and reactive powers to enable load compensation, harmonics current elimination, voltage flicker mitigation, voltage and frequency regulation. This paper presents power quality improvement technique in the presence of grid disturbances and wind energy penetration using DSTATCOM with battery energy storage system. DSTATCOM control is provided based on synchronous reference frame theory. A modified IEEE 13 bus test feeder with DSTATCOM and wind generator is used for the study. Power quality events during grid disturbances such as feeder tripping and re-closing, voltage sag, swell and load switching have been studied in association with DSTATCOM. The power quality disturbances due to wind generator outage, synchronization and wind speed variations have also been investigated. The study has been carried out using MATLAB/SIMULINK and the simulation results are compared with real time results obtained by the use of real time digital simulator (RTDS) for validating the effectiveness of proposed methodology. The proposed method has been proved to be effective in improvement of power quality with all disturbances stated above. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

This paper has discussed the study of the performance of dynamic voltage restorer (DVR) taking different voltage sag conditions in the supply voltage of the distribution system for linear and non-linear load. DVR is employed to mitigate the voltage sag. Proportional and integral (PI) controller is used for the control of DVR to mitigate the voltage sag. synchronous reference frame theorybased control algorithm has been implemented for generating reference voltages. In this paper, an efficient improved particle swarm optimisation technique for optimizing the gain parameters of the PI controller has been proposed. The performance and suitability of DVR is validated through MATLAB simulation results and use of Sim Power Systems Blocksets. Integral squared error is implemented to check the performance and suitability of DVR. Extensive results of the proposed method are presented and compared with conventional Ziegler Nichols and genetic algorithm methods of tuning gain parameters of PI controllers.

This study describes a new configuration of unified power quality conditioner (UPQC) based on current source converters (CSC) topology with left shunt configuration. It consists of photo voltaic (PV) source and ultra-capacitor with a buck-boost converter which is utilised for maintaining the constant DC-link current. The compensation of sag, swell, unbalance, fault conditions is done by proposed UPQC-CSC model. The control algorithm for UPQC is based on synchronous reference frame theory and hysteresis loop for the pulse generation. The performance analysis of the proposed work is done by interfacing the SIT server of host computer to LabVIEW and MATLAB/Simulink using transmission control protocol/Internet protocol communication network. Results proved that the proposed system is able to compensate voltage at sag, swell, unbalance and fault conditions in distribution network.

Honey Badger Algorithm Based PI Controller for DC Link Voltage Control of Solar Photovoltaic System Connected to Grid for Enhanced Power Quality

The parameters of the proportional integral (PI) controller used for DC link voltage control play a vital role in regulating the DC link voltage of grid-connected solar photovoltaic system that experiences heavy DC voltage fluctuation and various power quality issues due to integration of non-linear loads, varying irradiance and loading conditions. The existing strategies might fail to respond to the above complications due to fixed PI gains which restrict their scope of controlling domain. Therefore, adaptive PI gain values should be selected to quickly adjust to the varying conditions and dynamically obtain the optimal control settings. This article employs the honey badger algorithm (HBA), developed in Matlab to adaptively tune the PI controller gains value by minimizing the DC link voltage deviation. The advantages of using this technique over conventional PI controllers are its quick response, adaptability, stability, and optimal self-tuning process. The proposed algorithm has been tested under steady-state and dynamic conditions for different irradiation and loading conditions. Further, results of the proposed algorithm have been compared with PI controller and particle swarm optimization-PI controller to validate the efficacy of the proposed algorithm for grid-connected solar photovoltaic systems. It has been observed that the proposed algorithm maintains THD <3% in all the tested conditions.

Since a few years, a power quality issue becomes more critical on a power distribution system and profoundly influences on both technical and economic aspects. Grid stability is an essential constraint in present power system studies with the enhancement of power-quality features. During sudden interruptions, the battery energy storage system might be a better alternative to stabilise and meet the grid demand and/or it can store the energy during surplus power situation. The battery integrated compensator utilises the synchronous reference-frame theory for power-quality enhancement & battery charge control rather than an additional controller. This paper presents a battery integrated distributed static compensator for power quality improvement and to meet grid-demand under sudden changes. The performance evaluation of proposed battery integrated distributed compensator is verified under both charging the discharging control modes, evaluated by using Matlab/Simulink platform, results are illustrated.

A New Voltage and Frequency Controller for Standalone Parallel Operated Self Excited Induction Generators

This work proposes a new voltage and frequency controller (VFC) for standalone parallel operated self excited induction generators driven by uncontrolled micro hydro turbines. This VFC consists of a current controlled static compensator (STATCOM) for regulating the voltage during different load conditions and a variable frequency induction motor drive driving a water pump operating as an electronic load controller (ELC) for balancing the generated power, which in turn regulates the system frequency. The STATCOM functions as a reactive power compensator for regulating the system voltage and an active filter for harmonics elimination. The control algorithm of STATCOM is based on the synchronous reference frame (SRF) theory.

In this paper, a multilevel inverter based shunt hybrid active filter is used, which is composed of passive filter and shunt active filter, used for enhancing the quality of power, by reducing the total harmonic distortions below 5% as per IEEE-519 standard and managing the reactive power as well as correcting the power factor. The objective of this paper is to advance the power quality by reducing the harmonic distortions in the distribution line, which are affected because of utilising non-linear loads across the load end. For reference current generation and for controlling the switching signal, conventionally PI controller was used with different reference signal detection techniques. But with the evolution of different intelligence approaches, made more advantageous than the PI controller. In this paper, two artificial intelligence methods, i.e, artificial neural network and adaptive neuro-fuzzy interference system (ANFIS) are applied. Comparison of the results of the proposed methods is analysed using MATLAB/ SIMULINK tool. For reference current generation, synchronous reference frame theory is used and hysteresis current control technique is employed for generating the gating signal.

In this article, a solitary phase nine-level series connected H-Bridge powered by photovoltaic MPPT based SHAPF in view of basic controller is proposed. SRF is utilized for reference input current extraction and to create pulses for the SHAPF. The principle point of the cascaded bridge is to dispense harmonics, enhance power factor and reactive energy compensation of the single-phase distribution framework. The suggested control calculation has two parts, changing the load current into stationary reference outline directions and estimation of peak amplitude of load currents. Consequently, a basic and dependable controller effortlessly of execution was created. The calculation for single-phase SHAF is intending to perform with exact tracking performance under step changes in load currents and to give great dynamic compensation. In this article, synchronous reference theory PLL with Inverse-Park change is adopted for producing quadrature part of current. The execution of the control calculation is tried and assessed utilizing MATLAB/Simulink tool.

In this paper, synchronous reference frame theory controlling strategy is presented to generate reference current utilizing four-leg three-phase four-wire Distribution Static Compensator (DSTATCOM). An adaptive hysteresis band current controller is proposed to control the hysteresis bandwidth according to the modulation frequency, supply voltage, DC capacitor voltage and slope of the reference compensator current wave. DSTATCOM is used to compensate reactive power, neutral current, harmonic elimination and balancing load currents. The performance of these methods is investigated using Matlab/Simulink software under various load conditions considering IEEE standard 519-1992 recommendations for three-phase four-wire distribution systems. The results show appropriate compensation performance under linear and balance load as well as unbalanced and non-linear load conditions for proposed strategies.

Level of solar energy penetration in network of utilities is continuously increasing and reached to a significant level in recent years. Power electronics based converters which are used for interfacing solar photovoltaic (PV) plants to power system networks of utilities are non-linear in nature. Any disturbance developed in the network affects system parameters and power flow due to non-linearity of the system. Hence, suitable action is needed to minimize the effects of disturbance to improve the performance of network when solar energy is integrated. A method to minimize effects of grid disturbances on the performance of utility network with solar energy penetration is presented in this manuscript. This is achieved using Distribution static compensator (DSTATCOM) supported by energy storage in a battery. synchronous reference frame theory is used to achieve control of the DSTATCOM. A test system with five buses, a generator, loads and one solar PV system of 100 kW has been used to establish the effectiveness of the proposed method.
