Increase in renewable power generation increases the power penetration to grid. Inverter plays a major role in power penetration. In this paper transformer-less single phase grid tie inverter based on synchronous reference frame current control is proposed to supply active power (P) to grid. This current control provides infinite control gain and zero steady state error ideally. The plant transfer function of grid tie inverter is derived from the mathematical model and a proper compensator is designed to achieve a better transient response of the system. Transformer-less inverter provides high efficiency in real power transmission and low switching loss is achieved by Modified Unipolar Sinusoidal Pulse Width Modulation (MUSPWM).

Unified Unbalanced synchronous reference frame Current Control for Single-Phase Grid-Connected Voltage-Source Converters

This paper presents a unified structure of the unbalanced synchronous reference current control strategies for single-phase grid-tied voltage-source converters to obtain a zero steady-state error in the line current. An arbitrary waveform is used as the orthogonal current for the stationary to rotating frame axis transformation of the reference and measured grid currents. Various choices of such orthogonal signals lead to different control structures with the same performance characteristics. This causes a temporary unbalanced system, in which double-line frequency components appear in the control loops during the transient state. The proposed method with cross-axis decoupling, tuned at the control loop bandwidth by greater than eight times the grid frequency, has better performance than the existing virtual balanced synchronous reference frame scheme. Absence of the orthogonal signal generation guarantees the stability criterion of the control scheme. A zero steady-state error is still achieved under conditions of uncertainty in the converter parameters. Simulation and experimental results of a 1.5-kVA pulse width modulation rectifier validate the proposed methodology.

Three-phase grid voltage synchronization using sinusoidal amplitude integrator in synchronous reference frame

Synchronization with the grid voltage is critical in the control of grid-connected power converters. Under unbalanced grid condition, the conventional synchronous reference frame phase-locked loop (SRF-PLL) does not work well due to the effect of the fundamental negative sequence component. This paper proposes a new synchronization method, the sinusoidal amplitude integrator based phase locked loop (SAI-based PLL), to efficiently eradicate the effect of the fundamental negative sequence component. As a result, it can accurately and quickly estimate the amplitude and phase angle of the fundamental components of grid voltages in unbalanced grid conditions. In addition, when dc offset and harmonics are contained in the grid voltage, a multi-SAI-based PLL method is developed to extract the synchronization signal. The proposed SAI-based PLL incorporates the sinusoidal amplitude integrator into the conventional SRF-PLL. Its operation is analyzed using the complex-vector notation. Analysis of a hybrid controlled three-phase grid-connected inverter with harmonics compensation in synchronous reference frame

The power quality of three-phase grid-connected inverters has drawn attention with the increasing numbers of distributed generation systems. In order to effectively eliminate the harmonics in output currents, a hybrid system based on proportional-integral (PI) control and repetitive control (RC) implemented in the synchronous reference frame (SRF) is presented. Based on the reference frame transformation, the use of a repetitive controller is not for achieving fundamental reference current tracking but attaining the harmonics compensation, which is different from the RC designed in a static reference frame. In addition, analyses of the SRF-based hybrid controlled converter system, including stability constraints, harmonics rejection principles and the relationship between the PI controller and repetitive controller, are further developed in frequency domain and time domain. Finally, experimental results are demonstrated to validate the steady-state and dynamic performance of the proposed hybrid controlled system.

Analysis and controller design for stand-alone VSIs in synchronous reference frame

The common practice for controlling the stand-alone voltage source inverters (VSIs) is to transform abc voltage and current signals to DC signals using the dq transformation, which makes it possible to control the new DC voltage and current signals just using simple proportional-integral controllers with a zero steady-state tracking error. However, the transformation causes coupling terms between d- and q-axis components in both current control loops and voltage control loops, which deteriorate the dynamic and steady-state performance of the control system. This study presents a step-by-step graphical analysis and design approach for a three-phase stand-alone VSI system in the dq reference frame, which provides a clear systematic decoupling process to design the inner- and outer-loop current and voltage controllers, respectively. The closed-loop d- and q-axis output impedances of the stand-alone VSI system by considering the coupling effects between axes are also formulated, modelled, and evaluated. The study investigates how the decoupling and compensating terms added in the current and voltage controllers affect the dynamic performance and output dq impedances of the VSI system. Simulation and hardware results verify the effectiveness of the graphic design and analysis strategy.

Comprehensive Design and Implementation of a Modified synchronous reference frame Vector Control Method for High Power Three Phase PWM Rectifier

Three-phase PWM rectifiers have been used widely due to their benefits such as unity power factor, sinusoidal input current and also low-ripple output DC voltage. Among control methods, vector control method in the synchronous reference frame through proportional-integral compensators directly controls the input current. However, the effect of non-ideal grid voltage like harmonic polluted voltage was not investigated. In this paper, firstly, comprehensive design and digital implementation of modified vector control method with simple structure is proposed. Secondly, the effect of the grid voltage distortion is considered and a solution based on resonant controllers is also proposed. Thirdly, all of the designs and dynamic assessments of the overall control system are performed inzdomain to consider overall delay, comprehensively. Finally, extend simulations and experimental verifications on a high power 30 kW rectifier are done. The results not only show the significant decrease of THD value of the input current but also, simple structure for digital implementation is verified. All of these validate the effectiveness of the proposed control methods and design procedure.

This article analyzes the global stability of synchronous reference frame phase-locked loops (SRF-PLLs) from a large signal viewpoint. First, a large-signal model of SRF-PLL is accurately established, without applying any linearization method. Then, according to the phase portrait and Lyapunov argument, the global performance of SRF-PLL is discussed in the nonlinear frame. Compared with the small-signal analysis methods, the proposed analysis, not relying on the small-signal model and linearization method, provides a global discussion of the SRF-PLL performance. The contributions of this article are as follows. First, it is found that SRF-PLL has infinite equilibrium points, including stable points and saddle points. Second, it provides a way to divide the global region of SRF-PLL into many small regions. In each small region, the SRF-PLL only has one stable equilibrium point. And for any initial states ((theta) over tilde (t(0)), (omega) over tilde (t(0))) in a small region, all states ((theta) over tilde (t), (omega) over tilde (t)), t > t(0) will remain in this small region, and SRF-PLL will converge to the unique stable equilibrium point of this small region. Third, by dividing the global region of SRF-PLL into many small regions, it is found that when the frequency of grids varies largely, the SRF-PLL will converge to a new equilibrium point that is far away from the original equilibrium point. It is the reason why the frequency convergence of SRF-PLL has many oscillations and SRF-PLL has a rather slow dynamic, when the frequency changes largely. The experimental results are provided to verify the proposed global stability analysis of SRF-PLL.

A New synchronous reference frame-Based Method for Single-Phase Shunt Active Power Filters

This paper discusses the design of a novel synchronous reference frame (SRF) method that can extract the reference compensating current for single-phase shunt active power filters (APFs). Unlike previous SRF studies, the proposed method has an innovative feature that does not require a fictitious current signal. Other key features of the proposed strategy include frequency-independent operation, accurate reference current extraction, and relatively fast transient response. The effectiveness of the proposed method is investigated by conducting a detailed mathematical analysis. Results of the analysis confirm the superior performance of the suggested approach. Theoretical evaluations are confirmed by the experimental results.

New control approach for four-wire active power filter based on the use of synchronous reference frame

Since the development of the first theories for the active power filters (APF) control, many efforts have been concentrated to improve their performances because the number of non-linear loads did not stop to increase. Moreover, the appearance of non-linear load of different types, three-phase or single-phase, provokes unbalanced system, which requires more elaborated controls especially in term of robustness. For the unbalanced non-linear loads, the reduction of neutral current is one of the two aims of different APF's controls studied in this paper. This will be highly appreciated by the distribution networks. The second aim is naturally to obtain an acceptable THD for each line current. In this paper, three control methods, all based on the instantaneous powers theory introduced by H. Akagi [H. Akagi, Y Kanazawa, A. Nabae, Generalized theory of the instantaneous reactive power in three-phase circuits, in: Proceedings of International Power Electronics Conference, Tokyo, Japan (1983) 1375-1386.] are compared and advantages and drawbacks of each approach are discussed. Then, the improvements will be presented for these controls so as to obtain better results in case of unbalanced system. The simulation results will show the effectiveness of these improvements. Finally, in order to improve again the performances of APF, a new control is proposed. This approach is based on the use of synchronous reference frame and its effectiveness will be validated through numerical simulations. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Improving Dynamic Performance of Boost PFC Converter Using Current-Harmonic Feedforward Compensation in synchronous reference frame

In boost power factor correction (PFC) converters, a low-pass filter (LPF) is generally adopted to eliminate the influence of the double-line frequency output voltage ripple on the controlled input current, which, therefore, limits the outer-voltage loop bandwidth. Different from the existing alternative schemes to the LPF, which eliminate the influence of the output voltage ripple using output-feedback ways in the outer-voltage loop, this article proposes a current feedforward scheme in the inner-current loop to remove the LPF. In the proposed scheme, the harmonic distortion of the reference current is suppressed by using a current-harmonic feedforward compensation way in synchronous reference frame. Finally, a 225-W experimental prototype is built with digital implementation, and the experimental results show a more than 68% improvement of the dynamic response for the case with the proposed scheme as compared with the traditional LPF scheme, along with a high-quality controlled current.
