Port container terminals are essential intermodal interface in the global transportation network. Owing to advances of container logistics in today's globalized economy, the competitive edge of container terminals has shifted to information management paradigm for the purpose of cost- and time-efficiency. However, an effective yet systematic information sharing strategy, in terms of information acquisition, processing, communication, storage, display and analysis, has not been well addressed. The traditional information from port operation management was conducted using numerical and diagrammatical formats. As a result, it is an imperative to employ the latest visual technologies, i.e. virtual reality (VR) and geographical information system (GIS), to resolve these impacts so as to enhance the efficiency of port logistics. Accordingly, a novel logistics information system, i.e. a VR-based information-sharing infrastructure, which paves a new venue for container terminal operation and control, is proposed and investigated. Finally, a case study on Tianjing Container Port in China is consequently presented to illustrate this approach. It is indicated that the proposed VR-based system can be effectively applied for container terminals operation and facilitate the container terminals logistics process.

To support decision-making for security-risk mitigation and the appropriate selection of security countermeasures, we propose a system dynamics model of the security aspects of an enterprise system. We developed such an executable model, incorporating the concept of archetypes. We present here one archetype for computer security, namely symptomatic fixes (or shifting the burden). Using simulation, we show one instance of how this archetype can be used for recognizing and diagnosing typical situations, as well as for fixing problems. The global effects of changes and behavioral trends are examined, and other instances of symptomatic fixes in security are described as well.

Aim of the control system development for TESLA cavity is a more efficient stabilization of the pulsed, accelerating EM field inside resonator. Cavity parameters identification is an essential task for the comprehensive control algorithm. TESLA cavity simulator has been successfully implemented using high-speed FPGA technology. Electromechanical model of the cavity resonator includes Lorentz force detuning and beam loading. The parameters identification is based on the electrical model of the cavity. The model is represented by state space equation for envelope of the cavity voltage driven by current generator and beam loading. For a given model structure, the over-determined matrix equation is created covering long enough measurement range with the solution according to the least-squares method. A low-degree polynomial approximation is applied to estimate the time-varying cavity detuning during the pulse. The measurement channel distortion is considered, leading to the external cavity model seen by the controller. The comprehensive algorithm of the cavity parameters identification was implemented in the Matlab system with different modes of operation. Some experimental results were presented for different cavity operational conditions. The following considerations have lead to the synthesis of the efficient algorithm for the cavity control system predicted for the potential FPGA technology implementation. Certain properties of electronic speed control of three-phase ac motors are described, including some properties that can be modified by the user in the field. Emphasis is placed on closed-loop operation. Test results for one system are obtained. Using a standard control algorithm from linear control theory, a method of reducing steady-state speed error is demonstrated. No case of instability is found using various starting speeds, final speeds, and controller parameters for test results. simulation results are obtained for closed-loop operation using a controller model previously obtained for open-loop operation of this type system. The model contains multiple nonlinearities. No case of instability is found for various starting speeds, final speeds, controller parameters, and motor parameters for the simulation.

This paper analyzes the behavior of a DSP-based correlation filter used to mitigate the effects of thermal noise in a low-cost microelectromechanical system (MEMS) gyroscope. The gyroscope is driven by a 10 kHz sinusoidal signal and outputs a quadrature sinusoid whose amplitude is proportional to the Coriolis acceleration, thereby providing information concerning directional change. Due to the size and configuration of the MEMS gyroscope, the output signal is quite small and is therefore susceptible to both electrical and mechanical thermal noise. This paper employs optimization theory to analytically establish that the correlation filter is the optimum choice for reducing the effects of thermal noise in the output signal. DSP-based implementation of the filter is then discussed, followed by derivation of an analytic expression for signal-to-noise ratio of the output signal, with independent variables representing noise power spectral density, sampling rate, and integration period of the filter. Practical limitations concerning sampling rate are discussed, as is the relationship between integration period and response time for the gyroscope. simulation results are also provided, showing agreement with the analytic expressions.

Dynamic bottleneck control in wide variety production factory

At a factory which produces a wide variety of products such as ASIC's or microcomputers, it is necessary to detect any machine causing a bottleneck and return it to a high level of performance for fast and effective production. This paper introduces a workflow control system called "JUSTICE/MORAL" (just time process control system/method of optimum-buffer restriction and adjustment logic) which dynamically detects a machine causing a bottleneck and feeds work to that machine at an appropriate time. The advantages of this system are as follows: 1) manufacturing cycle time can be reduced by an average of 13% and a maximum of 50% and 2) throughput can be increased up to approximately 10%, Part of this system has been installed in our factory. We have seen that factory cycle time improved approximately 20% in the two month period from July to September 1998, Also, the machine causing the bottleneck was found quickly;as a result, the utilization of this machine increased by 3%.

This paper presents a Petri net approach to modeling, analysis, simulation, scheduling, and control of semiconductor manufacturing systems. These systems can be characterized as discrete event systems that exhibit sequential, concurrent, and conflicting relations among the events and operations. Their evolution is dynamic over time, The system complexity is tremendous owing to the complex semiconductor manufacturing processes and test procedures. A formal approach such as Petri nets enables one to describe such complex discrete event systems precisely and thus allows one to perform both qualitative and quantitative analysis, scheduling and discrete-event control of them. This paper also serves as a tutorial paper. It briefly reviews applications of Petri nets in semiconductor manufacturing automation. It then introduces definitions and concepts of Petri nets. It proceeds with a discussion of basic Petri net modules in system modeling, a modeling method and a practical system's modeling example. Next, the paper presents their properties and their implications in manufacturing systems, as well as their analysis methods. Timed Petri nets are introduced for system simulation, performance evaluation, and scheduling purposes. An application-oriented case study is presented. Finally, the paper concludes with the active research areas in applying Petri nets to design of semiconductor manufacturing systems.

A Computerized Scheduling system (CSS) for a gear box manufacturing plant has been developed to simulate a specific manufacturing facility and to analyse conditions that identify bottlenecks during the production process. The model, based partly on practical experience and partly on theoretical work, allows the analyst to concentrate on a single entity (such as a job) and the sequence of events and activities that undergoes as it ''passes through'' the system. The CSS makes use of actual company data regarding individual machines and operators, and incorporates interarrival times, job types, tasks for each job, routings for the different job types and process time for each job type and specific task. Also, the model provides information on output - average total delay in queue, average number in queue, average utilization and average delay in queue. Although the resultant model was constructed for the application on hand, the principles employed can be extended to include procedures encountered in similar manufacturing environments.

DESIGNING A COGNIZANT INTERFACE BETWEEN THE USER AND THE simulation SOFTWARE

A cognizant interface exhibits artificially intelligent knowledge and behavior toward the parties it is to serve in its interfacing role. These parties are the human user, on one hand, and the computer-based simulation software, on the other. The interface is therefore viewed as two-sided. To enable users who are neither computer specialists nor simulation experts to take advantage of sophisticated tools for system modeling and simulation, new approaches to interface design are necessary. They must encompass state-of-the-art technology (e.g. computer graphics and networks) as well as utilize techniques available in the areas of artificial intelligence and human-computer interaction. This paper has a three-fold purpose: to present results of a structured review of the simulation + ar tificial intelligence literature; to focus on criteria for engineering a modifiable interface; and to add to that interface the ability to adapt to the user. An illustrative prototype is outlined and a simulation-oriented framework of knowledge bases is presented.
