ON system complexity, STABILITY AND PERFORMANCE: APPLICATION TO PREDICTION

Intuitively, the three properties of complexity, stability, and system performance are interrelated. For instance, more complex ecological systems tend to be less stable, and in software engineering, software performance reliability is directly affected by software complexity. We introduce a new rigorous framework that shows how these three properties interrelate. We focus on a specific family of systems that predict input binary Markov chains. A system's output is a binary sequence that indicates when it fails to predict the input. system complexity is the average number of information bits needed to describe the output per input bit. system stability is the discrepancy between the system's output when presented with two random input sequences. A bound on the prediction error is derived and used as a system's performance guarantee. It is shown that as complexity increases, stability decreases, and performance guarantee becomes more sensitive to changes in the input, making the system less robust. The analysis taken here is applicable to more general systems.

As modern engineered systems become ever more connected and interdependent there is an increasing need to evaluate their complexity. However, evaluating system complexity is challenging due to the complicated conceptual landscape of competing definitions of the term complexity itself, and the range of perspectives that can be taken on what constitutes the system of Interest. This paper attempts to overcome these hurdles through introducing a complexity Register with which to build and record a shared understanding of system complexity for key stakeholders. In order to overcome current challenges in evaluating the complexity of an engineering system, the complexity Register encourages personnel to adopt a broad range of perspectives on the potential issues, impacts, and mitigations to manage system complexity. The formulation of the complexity Register is informed by design principles derived from a case study analysis of a system complexity evaluation tool. The complexity Register should enable more effective shared understanding by encouraging collaboration that makes explicit the multiple viewpoints taken when evaluating system complexity and promoting continued reevaluation throughout a system or project lifecycle.

The purpose of this article is to describe theoretical and current thought leadership on managing system complexity to engage improvement for better results. The literature review presented describes the current trends in systems management as a means for continuous improvement, rather than as an exercise in oversimplification of systems through reductionist strategies. This conceptualisation of holistic management of organisations is opening up pathways for best practice and emerging trends, such as through methods focused on the explicit, such as for reducing risk and increasing efficiency via model-based or simulation-based engineering, and the Digital Twin. But also through methods focused on the tacit, such as through shedding of paradigms that serve as barriers to systems management through adaptive management, standardisation of outcomes, integration structures and integrated ideation of system congruence are being used for improving results. A literature review and presentation of four case studies are provided make the case for the need and effect of managing system complexity for better results. These trends in systems thought leadership and practices in systemology open up organisational capacity to engage in enriched systems management.

Modeling system complexity in the Context of Geopolitics Related to Climate Change

Due mainly to the evolution of science and technology, ontic systems have continuously become more complex. Thus, original institutional economics has adopted and advanced the concepts of complex systems. This article further develops complexity concepts and relates them to problems of climate change. systems complexity is combined with concepts from geopolitics in order to introduce geopolitical analysis about boundaries/borders into complex systems. The addition of geopolitical ideas allows for systems to focus on a designated social and ecological context that fits the problem of interest. The social and ecological components of open geopolitical systems lead to processes that are dynamic and complex. Thus, complex-systems modeling needs the assistance of geopolitical concepts and geopolitical models need to be embedded in complex systems. Each section of the article clarifies its meaning with examples of climate change concerns.

Management of system complexity in HAZOP for the Oil &Gas Industry

The paper gives an insight in how to deal with system complexity from a HAZOP study perspective. The research enlightens the importance of understanding system complexity in oil and gas industry and thereby gradually to change old-fashioned HAZOP industrial practice and improve safety performance in oil and gas industry. Methods and computer aided tools mentioned in the paper can improve HAZOP quality and efficiency with low manpower cost and support brainstorm section in HAZOP studies. The oil and gas industry can implement the method for HAZOP study on real plants to test its usefulness. © 2018

Computing centers of small and mid-sized companies, experimental labs of IT research institutes or IT training centers nowadays all have one thing in common: the complexity of their systems and the need for running these systems securely increases dramatically. Routers, switches, firewalls, intrusion detection systems, monitoring services, various sensors and other IT security components are just a few systems modern computing centers have to run. The operators of these computing centers can hardly be experts in all of these systems and they are challenged by dynamic and fast moving IT services and network infrastructures. Furthermore, the lack of well-trained personnel for administrating these systems exacerbates the problem of securely running such complex systems given the fact of increasing number of security attacks onto them. To overcome this problem we present a concept and an architecture to support operators of computing centers and lab environments in their daily work in a new, machine supported and semi virtualized way in order to achieve a higher level of security, a better situational awareness and faster response time for (security) incidents. But even more demanding is the decision making process itself, as many decisions are not made by technical experts but by the management level. Thus, our architecture also integrates decision makers - non IT-experts or technicians - in this process. Based on high level visualization of operative effects and outcomes to the management, e.g. impact of compromised and attacked systems or system failures on the business, our new architecture for a level-appropriate processing and visualization of complex information and data, assists to bridge the gap between the language of the technician and the decision maker in order to take time critical and constructive decisions.

Impact of technology infusion on system architecture complexity

In complex systems with long life cycles, it is expected that the requirements of these systems will change over time. Therefore, it is important to be able to upgrade the system accordingly over time. This is often accomplished by infusing new technologies into the host system in order to update or improve the overall system performance. However, technology infusion often requires a redesign of the host system, resulting in a change in the overall system architecture complexity. In this study, we used the structural complexity index to analyse the impact of technology infusion by performing three main steps: (1) measurement of structural complexity, (2) Comparative Analysis A to determine the impact of components and their interfaces in each system and (3) Comparative Analysis B to determine the impact of technology infusion. To demonstrate the proposed process, we analyse technology infusion concepts for a hydrogen-enhanced combustion engine. Results show that the structural complexity index can be used as an indicator of the impact of design changes. To manage complex systems, decision-makers should consider the impact of technology infusion on the upgraded system, and select a better solution with high benefits and lower costs.

A reliable method for categorizing and quantifying system complexity has been successfully demonstrated. The technique is based on an ordinal scale applicable to programs and products in government and industry. It provides objective planning and analysis, supporting management and technical decisions. This paper describes how the scale has been developed and how it has been successfully used in modeling and simulating program outcomes. In the background section, we provide the motivation behind why a more reliable method to characterize system complexity is needed. In the next section, we discuss our approach to measuring and modeling system complexity. Finally, we summarize our findings.

This work proposes the development of a metric for the analysis of operational robustness in systems, focusing on performance, complexity, and stability as key components. The methodology integrates these factors, enabling the assessment of the system's ability to meet its design requirements, its internal dynamics and external interactions, and its capacity to return to equilibrium after disturbances. The metric is applied in three case studies: an intensive care unit, process scheduling in operating systems, and traction and braking in electric vehicles. The results show that, in scenarios with higher robustness, the contributions of performance, complexity and stability are balanced, with performance contributing around 30% and complexity and stability each contributing approximately 35%. In contrast, scenarios with lower robustness exhibit greater variation in the contributions of these components. These findings suggest that the proposed metric is an efficient tool for both quantitative and qualitative analyses, providing more detailed perspectives for decision making in complex systems.

How Does the Fractional Derivative Change the complexity of the Caputo Standard Fractional Map

The impact of power-law memory on the dynamics of the Caputo standard fractional map is investigated in this paper. The definition of a complexity measure for the Caputo standard fractional map is introduced. This measure evaluates both the average algebraic complexity of a trajectory and the distribution of the trajectories of different types in the phase space of the system. The interplay between the small-scale spatial chaos and the large-scale spatial behavior is observed and measured during the transition of the Caputo standard fractional map from the circle map to the classical standard map. It is demonstrated that the impact of the fractional derivative on the complexity of the fractional system is not straightforward and is predetermined by the physical properties governing the dynamics of that system.
