Assessment of the effectiveness of a field-scale combined ecological treatment system at removing water pollutants, after optimization using a system dynamic model: a case study of rural inland ponds in China

Field-scale combined ecological treatment systems (FCETS) are designed to remove nutrients from aquaculture wastewater in ponds according to the characteristics of the nutrients present. We designed and established a numerical model based on the system dynamic (SD) method, to optimize the parameters of FCETS. Results showed that the mean removal rates of TSS, TN, NO3--N, NH4+-N, TP, DP, and CODMn ranged from 83.3 to 125.8%, 41.1 to 49.1%, 44.8 to 56.2%, 49.3 to 55.6%, 80.0 to 88.2%, 52.6 to 65.0%, and 52.0 to 61.5%, respectively. The SD model provided satisfactory estimates of water quality at the outlet throughout both the validation and calibration periods. In addition, we conducted a sensitivity analysis to determine the key parameters of the SD model. This also involved optimization of the N and P removal capacity of FCETS, and their corresponding discharge (Q), and concentration (C) at the inlet. This made it possible to use R and MATLAB to simulate seasonal differences in the removal of N and P. Our results indicate that a FCETS can be used to efficiently remove nutrients from rural wastewater in ponds. In addition, we demonstrated that the SD-based numerical model is a useful management support tool to ensure that decisions are made which result in the stable operation of a FCETS. This illustrates that contamination-free aquaculture from rural inland ponds is a feasible goal.

This paper combines a risk-based two-stage stochastic robust programming (RTSRP) model into an agricultural-ecological system dynamics (AESD) to conduct agricultural-ecological water resources management. It integrates the chance- constrained programming, conditional risk-at-value, two-stage stochastic robust programming with the AESD model. The RTSRP model improves upon the TSRP model by introducing the risk control measurements. The agricultural-ecological dynamic system (AEDS) model can build water connections amid wheat, field corn, seed corn, economic crops, woodland, meadow, and city greening and farmland shelterbelts. Besides, the ecological service value is transformed into the irrigation benefit of ecological sector to guide water allocation amid sub-ecological sectors at a more applicable detailed scale. It can tradeoff relationships between economic benefit and ecological recovery by formulating two enlarging ecological areas scenarios. The combinations of the RTSRP model and the AEDS model can get optimal water allocation schemes, and simulate future sustainable degree (SD) of optimal water allocation schemes and explore relationships amid water allocation, economic benefit, and SD and risk and robustness of model. It is used to the middle reaches of the Heihe River Basin in China to verify its application. The results show that water allocation schemes have different responses on various risk scenarios. Higher water allocation corresponds to bigger water shortage risk and higher robustness of the model. The economic benefit positive with water allocation is contradictory with SD. Enlarging ecological areas contributes to improvements of economic benefit and ecological recovery, but not the SD under the condition of enough water resources.

A reliable system simulation of the reciprocal mechanism between water resource utilization and dualistic water cycle is essential to the basin water resource sustainability management. In this study, a system dynamic model was built to simulate the water cycle change and lake water environmental pressure under the influence of water resources utilization, and the procedure of a progressive operational scenario analysis of how to relieve water environment pressure was illustrated. Dianchi Lake, which is the sixth largest and the most severely polluted freshwater lake in China, was employed as a case study to demonstrate the applicability of the model. The change of runoff components and pollution load of total nitrogen from 2000 to 2030 were discussed. Also, the sustainable water resource management was ultimately realized in the planning period through three progressive levels of water resource regulation scenarios. Compared with business-as-usual scenario, the TN pollution load into lake and total water demand decrease by 27.1 and 27.3%, and the domestic water use, industry water use, tertiary industry water use, and irrigation decrease 9.0, 16.8, 29.5, and 30% in the scenario 3.

In the past decade, sales of electrical and electronic equipment have undergone explosive growth worldwide, while at the same time, the life cycles of electrical and electronic equipment have been getting shorter. This has resulted in large numbers of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) being generated, which causes serious environmental problems that each country has to face. In this paper, we use the system dynamic method to analyze how China's "WEEE processing fund" policy, wherein levies or subsidies are set on appropriate targets, influences the economic and environmental conditions of participants in the WEEE management system. The simulations results suggest that the "WEEE processing fund" policy could improve the economic status of those receiving subsidies without losing the economic revenue from levies and improve the entire system's ability to recover and process waste equipment. The liquid-fueled molten salt reactor uses liquid fuel, and its dynamic characteristics are different from the traditional solid fuel reactor. dynamic modeling and simulation play a key role in the design phase of the innovative reactor system. Based on modelica language, a modelica model named TMSRLib(Thorium-based Molten Salt Reactor Library) for dynamic modeling and simulation of liquid-fueled molten salt reactor system is developed using Dymola platform. In order to verify the validity of the developed dynamic simulation model library, two system models of the MSRE(molten salt reactor experiment) with core represented by single region and nine regions are built based on the TMSRLib modelica library, respectively. Then the two system models of the MSRE are validated by using experimental benchmarks of MSRE. The results show that the numerical results are in good agreement with MSRE experimental results, and verifies the applicability and correctness of each component model in TMSRLib.

A system dynamic model to estimate hydrological processes and water use in a eucalypt plantation

Eucalypts have been identified as one of the best feedstocks for bioenergy production due to their fast-growth rate and coppicing ability. However, their water use efficiency along with the adverse environmental impacts is still a controversial issue. In this study, a system dynamic model was developed to estimate the hydrological processes and water use in a eucalyptus urophylla plantation using the STELLA (Structural Thinking and Experiential Learning Laboratory with Animation) software. This model was both calibrated and validated with very good agreements between model predictions and field measurements obtained from our experiment. Two simulation scenarios were employed in this study, one was to quantify the hydrological processes in a eucalypt plantation (40m x 40m) under a normal (a base scenario) sandy soil condition, while the other was to estimate the potential impacts of the wet and dry sandy soil conditions upon the eucalyptus water use. A characteristic monthly variation pattern was found for soil evaporation, leaf transpiration, and root uptake, with increasing from winter to summer and decreasing from summer to the following winter. Overall, the rates of evaporation, transpiration, evapotranspiration (ET), and uptake were in the following order: ET > root uptake > leaf transpiration > soil evaporation. The maximum rate of leaf transpiration was about five times greater than that of soil evaporation. The cumulative annual water use by the eucalypts was 690,000 L/plot (or 3200 L/tree). Although no differences in ET rate and water use were found between the base and wet soil conditions, the discernable discrepancies in ET rate and water use were observed between the wet and dry soil conditions when the soil water content was below 0.17 cm(3)/cm(3). This study suggests that the system dynamic model developed with STELLA is a useful tool to estimate soil hydrological processes and water use in a eucalypt plantation. Published by Elsevier B.V.

A decision making system is proposed to run building projects in Malaysia and is known as system dynamic model. The project is under Public Private Partnership University's student accommodation. The issue exists when the private sector failed to make decision making in determining certain financial variables such as Building Lease Charges since it affects the project IRR. This IRR is an important mark for a successful project. However, it is determined by the public sector, which delays the decision making process. Furthermore, contradiction in determining this variable could arises between the sectors. In the process of making decision to determine the variable, there will be recurring revision of previous system (financial model) including recalculation and restructuring the building lease charges amount. Hence, it makes the process too complicated and slow. Therefore, this paper aims to develop system dynamic model (SDM) as an alternative approach to make decision faster when determining Building Lease Charges and facilitate the process of making decision. Moreover, this SDM can simulates and analyzes the sensitivity of building lease charges to the IRR. The methodology is based on quantitative technique. Data is collected and a case study on a PPP university's student accommodation project is used. From the research results, the parameters of Building Lease Charges which affected to the Project IRR within range 16% is RM38-RM39. The sensitivity histogram generated that there are 21 simulations for which, at time 23, Project IRR is between 17.6% and 21% and about 2 simulations in which it is between - 2.8% and 0.60%. The results give substantially more information than an expected Project IRR in making that judgment. It is proven that SDM could solve the problem for the associated determination of building lease charges. Effective planning and management strategies of the Manila clam (Ruditapes philippinarum) stock in Arcachon Bay rely on a co-management approach, involving scientific advice and the fishing industry. In order to strengthen this management process, a specific compartmental single-species model has been developed to assess different management strategies. Based upon a size structure of the population and built from the dynamic systems paradigm, the modelling involves selected environmental and fishery-related parameters for their impact on the population dynamics. Integration of newly available life traits data regarding the local population and better knowledge of the fishing activity and its control parameters have enabled a revision of the existing version including model parameters and integration of new formulations. Effect of food availability and total suspended matter on the production of newly settled juveniles, natural mortality, growth rates, and price, accounted for the bulk of the undertaken improvements. model performance was evaluated by comparing simulation outputs to observed data from stock assessments (2003, 2006, 2008, 2010, 2012, 2014 and 2018). In addition, a sensitivity analysis regarding uncertainty on parameters related to biological and environmental aspects was carried out to provide information about parameters that influence the outputs of the model the most. In particular, this highlighted that a deeper understanding of the processes related to the reproduction phase and its control pa-rameters on biomass should be pursued. The improvements enable the calibration of the model with parameters that are as close as possible to the specificities of the stock considered. This adaptation permits use of the model to test various management strategies on the stock evolution and also to evaluate potential effects of environ-mental or market fluctuations.
