Using system dynamics modeling approach to strengthen health systems to combat cancer: a systematic literature review

AimDynamic cancer control is a current health system priority, yet methods for achieving it are lacking. This study aims to review the application of system dynamics modeling (SDM) on cancer control and evaluate the research *** were searched in PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus from the inception of the study to 15 November 2023. Inclusion criteria were English original studies focusing on cancer control with SDM methodology, including prevention, early detection, diagnosis and treatment, and palliative care. Exclusion criteria were non-original research, and studies lacking SDM focus. Analysis involved categorization of studies and extraction of relevant data to answer the research question, ensuring a comprehensive synthesis of the field. Quality assessment was used to evaluate the SDM for cancer *** studies were included in this systematic review predominantly from the United States (7, 43.75%), with a focus on breast cancer research (5, 31.25%). Studies were categorized by WHO cancer control modules, and some studies may contribute to multiple modules. The results showed that included studies comprised two focused on prevention (1.25%), ten on early detection (62.50%), six on diagnosis and treatment (37.50%), with none addressing palliative care. Seven studies presented a complete SDM process, among which nine developed causal loop diagrams for conceptual models, ten utilized stock-flow charts to develop computational models, and thirteen conducted *** review's macrofocus on SDM in cancer control missed detailed methodological analysis. The limited number of studies and lack of stage-specific intervention comparisons limit comprehensiveness. Integrated system dynamics modeling and optimization for artisanal and small-scale gold supply chains

We address artisanal and small-scale gold mining in Peru. Using the data collected through field visits, we develop a system dynamics (SD) model to examine the current operations of the gold supply chain, and its interplay with mercury and gas suppliers. The current mining operations cause potential health and environmental issues, due to high mercury usage, and other issues (e.g., safety issues). As a potential solution to overcome such problems, we consider incorporating a cyanide processing facility into the SD model, where we examine the amount of ore that a miner would be willing to sell to the facility under several payback scenarios. We formulate a mixed-integer programming model that prescribes the optimal transition plan of a miner from local production to selling their ore to the facility within a time horizon that maximizes a miner's profit. The optimal solution provides a 22% improvement in the miners' profit over that of their current operations. We also conduct a sensitivity analysis to test the sensitivity of the optimal solution to the changes in several input parameters. We discuss that the solution is most sensitive to the gold price changes and the least sensitive to the local production cost changes.

This article develops a system dynamics model for innovation ecosystems in the high-tech industry. The model emphasizes the interactions between high-tech enterprises, the government, and universities in the innovation process. In particular, we use two high-tech instruments, the Mars Rock Corer and the Soil Preparation system, in the aerospace innovations developed by Hong Kong Polytechnic University. These instruments are a byproduct of collaborations with the European Space Agency, Russian Space Agency, and China Space Agency. They span decades of space missions to the moon and Mars. Furthermore, we propose a three parities systems dynamics model to study innovation behaviors. This model can be used to study and analyze the stakeholders' interactions in high-technology-oriented innovation ecosystems. Theoretical, computational, and simulation studies are also conducted to understand and evaluate the evolution of the ecosystem. The results demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of this approach, which can be applied in on a large scale and in complex space projects.

Accurate prediction of municipal water demand is critically important to water utilities in fast-growing urban regions for drinking water system planning, design, and water utility asset management. Achieving the desired prediction accuracy is challenging, however, because the forecasting model must simultaneously consider a variety of factors associated with climate changes, economic development, population growth and migration, and even consumer behavioral patterns. Traditional forecasting models such as multivariate regression and time series analysis, as well as advanced modeling techniques (e.g., expert systems and artificial neural networks), are often applied for either short- or long-term water demand projections, yet few can adequately manage the dynamics of a water supply system because of the limitations in modeling structures. Potential challenges also arise from a lack of long and continuous historical records of water demand and its dependent variables. The objectives of this study were to (1) thoroughly review water demand forecasting models over the past five decades, and (2) propose a new system dynamics model to reflect the intrinsic relationship between water demand and macroeconomic environment using out-of-sample estimation for long-term municipal water demand forecasts in a fast-growing urban region. This system dynamics model is based on a coupled modeling structure that takes into account the interactions among economic and social dimensions, offering a realistic platform for practical use. Practical implementation of this water demand forecasting tool was assessed by using a case study under the most recent alternate fluctuations of economic boom and downturn environments. In this work, a system dynamics (SD) model of a coagulation-ultrafiltration (UF) process was developed using Vensim and validated with experimental data. The SD model includes the basic elements and essential structure of the coagulation-UF process system. Numerical simulations were used to optimize the operating parameters of the SD model. The simulation results demonstrated that the absorption resistance (R-a) contributed a small portion of the total resistance (R-t) (15%) in the basic experiment, where the initial permeate flux (J(0)) was 35m(3)/(m(2)h). Furthermore, the cake layer resistance (R-c) was the main cause of the total resistance (R-t) within the model. The concentration of coagulant and the removal rate of membrane fouling were positively correlated when the coagulant concentration increased from 20 to 35mg/L. In addition, the contribution of total resistance to membrane fouling was obtained from the SD model. The membrane fouling rate reached 22.5Pa/h after 16 backwashing cycles which corresponds to the predicted chemical cleaning time. The SD model presented here can provide guidance in optimizing operating parameters through numerical simulations which eschew the need for large amounts of repeated tests.

The authors present an empirical investigation and a system dynamics model of human decision priming. Decision priming occurs when initial information creates the expectation that a given decision is appropriate, which speeds up or slows down decision making. A conjunction benefits-and-costs paradigm was used to collect the empirical data, whereas system dynamics techniques were used to create a computational model of decision priming. Decision priming occurred with simulated naturalistic stimuli (i.e., models of military tanks in a desert scene presented in perspective view), the results of which were modeled in a parallel-channels coactive architecture. Simulation revealed that the basic features of decision priming in humans could be simulated with this architecture. Decision priming likely occurs in naturalistic settings. Predictions derived from the model could provide useful information for the design of multimodal or multichannel displays.

Organizations providing services to persons with intellectual disabilities (ID) are complex because of many interacting stakeholders with often different and competing interests. The combination of increased consumer demand and diminished resources makes organizational planning a challenge for the managers of such organizations. Such challenges are confounded by significant demands for the optimization of resources and the goal to reduce expenses and to more effectively and efficiently use existing resources while at the same time providing high quality services. The authors explore the possibilities of using system dynamics modelling in organizational decision-making processes related to resource allocations. system dynamics suggests the application of generic systems archetypes as a first step in interpreting complex situations in an organization. The authors illustrate the application of this method via a case study in one provider organization in the Netherlands. The authors contend that such a modeling approach can be used by the management of similar organizations serving people with ID as a tool to support decision making that can result in optimal resource allocation.

Water demands and stresses in the Vietnam Mekong Delta (VMD) are of high concern for the coming decade. system dynamics modeling (SDM) can be used to understand the impacts of the changes on water resources at a regional scale. SDM framework was applied to assess the impacts of land use changes and climate on surface water resource in the VMD. The developed model was modified from a global-scale model and added in-situ specific variables to model the conditions of the VMD using historical data during 1986-2005, and future projections to 2050 under two Representative Concentration Pathways scenarios (RCP4.5 and RCP8.5). Projected changes in land use and population were based on the most recent governmental resolution to support adaptation and the national plans. Temperature and rainfall changes cause the increase in water stress;however, it could be mitigated by shifting from three to two crops of rice each year. Water stress differs from place to place, such as in freshwater and brackish coastal zones. Water stress is most strongly affected by changed temperature, rather than rainfall. The developed system dynamics model and framework can be effectively applied in the VMD to support decision-making about sustainable water use for paddy rice.

Development of strategies to control urban air pollution is a complex process involving a wide range of sciences. In this study a system dynamics model is proposed in order to estimate the behavior of parameters affecting air pollution in Tehran. The proposed model includes two subsystems: (1) urban transportation, (2) air polluting industries. In this paper, several policies are proposed to mitigate air pollution. The proposed model is simulated under several scenarios using historical data of transportation and industrial sectors in Tehran. Policies are categorized as: (1) road construction, (2) technology improvement in fuel and automotive industries, (3) traffic control plans, (4) development of public transportation infrastructures. The results show effectiveness of the proposed policies. In this case, technology improvement in fuel and automotive industries and development of public transportation infrastructures are more effective policies in order to reduce air pollution. Circularity assessment of product-service systems using system dynamics modeling

Product-Service systems (PSS) show the potential to implement the principles of a circular economy based on their characteristics, such as the use of an extended value network or the access of the PSS provider after distribution. PSS research shows that PSS are not inherently circular but must be designed specifically towards circularity. This requires an assessment method that can quantify the dimensions of circularity. In this paper, an assessment method based on system dynamics (SD) modeling is presented that allows the use of raw materials and the generation of waste to be evaluated in the context of PSS. The SD model is based on a conceptual integration of circular economy strategies into the lifecycle of PSS. The model formulation is described in detail and validated with several tests. The capabilities of the assessment approach are presented in an application scenario. The results show that SD modeling can be used for circularity assessment and can possibly serve as a starting point to enhance circularity.
