Closed-form solution to multi-mode aerodynamic damping of monopile-supported offshore wind turbines

This paper presents an explicit solution to multi-mode aerodynamic damping of monopile-supported offshore wind turbines (OWTs), focusing on the first three fore-aft and side-side modes of the tower. The analytically derived aerodynamic damping matrix enables rapid quantification of aerodynamic coupling effects and modal damping of the OWT system at any operational point. A 14-degree-of-freedom OWT model is developed, incorporating essential features such as aeroelasticity, pitch control, and mechanical coupling. Second and third tower vibration modes in each direction are introduced to reveal multi-mode aerodynamic coupling effects. Comparative analyses with nonlinear OWT simulations confirm that the model employing linearized aerodynamic loads maintains high fidelity and robustness. Leveraging the linearized model, the wind speed dependence of multi-mode aerodynamic coupling and damping ratios of the OWT system is rigorously investigated. Findings highlight that tower top rotation plays a decisive role in generating multi-mode aerodynamic coupling. Excluding blade flexibility, tower top rotation, or aerodynamic coupling terms results in varying degrees of inaccuracy in evaluating multi-mode damping ratios, whereas the omission of hydrodynamic added mass matrix is of minimal consequence. In both the fore-aft and side-side directions, the aerodynamic damping of the first tower mode is significantly higher than that of the second and third modes. The third side- side mode exhibits negative aerodynamic damping ratios throughout the entire operational range, indicating a potential instability issue.

Supporting strategy using system dynamics

This paper presents a protocol for supporting strategy development via system dynamics (SD) modeling in consultation with Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) of small organizations;it also reports on the effectiveness of this protocol one year after an initial study was conducted. The protocol was applied in five small organizations;it involves the development of a SD model that is used to generate scenarios of alternative strategic situations an organization may face. We found that when the CEOs identified more feedback loops and causal relationships among key resources through their modeling analyses, they increased their capacities to generate new strategic ideas through more developed mental models. However, those CEOs who were not able to generate alternative strategic ideas to overcome the challenges of scenarios presented during the simulation sessions found it difficult to make strategic decisions when the scenarios occurred one year after our intervention. This finding suggests that SD modeling can affect firm performance when the facilitation process helps CEOs reflect on potential strategic actions that can be taken in the future. When CEOs cannot change their strategic plans by imagining what should be done in a challenging scenario, they are not able to address challenging situations when they arise. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. A system dynamics sustainable business model for Petroleos Mexicanos (Pemex): case based on the Global Reporting Initiative

We propose a system dynamics model to explain the implementation and development of business sustainable policies at Petroleos Mexicanos (Pemex). The model is built using information reported by this company on the Global Reporting Initiative website. The simulation model incorporates the participation and expectations of internal and external stakeholders in defining sustainability (as perceived by the organization) and implementing its initiatives. Three variables (leadership, stakeholder motivation and external factors), identified as leverage points in the model, are used as means to improve the organization's journey towards achieving sustainability. The results of the simulation model seem to indicate that by increasing leadership activity and levels of stakeholder motivation, the journey towards sustainability can be greatly improved, and that external economic factors do not have a significant impact on sustainability achievement. These findings are pertinent for organizations currently in the process of implementing sustainable policies and strategies. A system dynamics based socio-hydrological model for agricultural wastewater reuse at the watershed scale

The purpose of this study was to develop and verify a socio-hydrological model using system dynamics (SD), thereby combining a deterministic conceptual hydrological model and a social model incorporating population, land use, economics, technology, and policy dimensions. Applied to a central South Korean watershed where wastewater is reused for paddy irrigation, the present model was verified in terms of structure and behavior. Structural validity was confirmed when expected simulation sensitivity and consistency criteria were met during behavior sensitivity and extreme conditions tests. The model's behavioral validity in predicting hydrological processes including evapotranspiration, stream flow, and groundwater level, was also confirmed as the calibrated model performance during the validation period showed good agreement with those of the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model, validated for the study watershed, as well as observed groundwater levels. The values of Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency (E-NS), percent bias (PBIAS), and R-2 which compared model results with those of the SWAT model were 0.77,3.0%, and 0.79, respectively, for the evapotranspiration, and 0.69, 1.4%, and 0.75, respectively, for the stream flow, while the generated and observed groundwater levels exhibited a linear relationship with an R-2 value of 0.70. The validated model indicated that urbanization within the study watershed could lead to increased stream flow and greater wastewater reuse. Instream flow regulation led to a decrease in stream flow tied to a lower base flow, and a decrease in social benefits associated with a decline in wastewater reuse. An assessment was made of the SD-based socio-hydrological model's usefulness when acting as an element of an integrated framework in providing a better understanding of small-scale socio-hydrological systems' interactions and the underlying causes of general trends and problems. Combining energy efficiency at source and at consumer to reach 4th generation district heating: Economic and system dynamics analysis

The article examines the transition from conventional district heating (DH) system to a 4th generation DH (4GDH) system using system dynamics modeling and economic feasibility analysis. Six alternative scenarios are studied. Energy saving measures reduce energy consumption, CO2 emissions and installed capacity of heating equipment thus facilitating the transition of the DH system towards zero emission system. Reduction of the required installed heating capacity allows implementing a low-temperature regime for heat distribution networks. For four of the analyzed scenarios this regime was achieved without increase of electricity consumption for heat supply. Results show that the implementation of 4GDH depends on the policies applied. The research identifies a balance point between the implementation of energy efficiency measures at the source and at heat consumers' side. The article shows how the price of a fossil fuel influence the share of heat energy production and the balance point between investment at the source and heat consumers side. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. Quantity versus Quality in China's South-to-North Water Diversion Project: A system dynamics Analysis

The South-to-North Water Diversion (SNWD) Project has entered the operational stage. The infrastructure decreases water shortages and promotes economic growth for North China, whereas the environmental effects have yet to be fully examined. In this paper, an analysis of the interaction between water quantity and water quality is conducted using the system dynamics method. In a specific province covering areas that provide and receive water, simulation results for economic and environmental indicators at different levels of transferred water and pollution rates are obtained. Certain conclusions can be drawn from the findings. First, the SNWD Project can provide a sufficient quantity of water for economic growth in receiving regions. Second, an efficient quantity of transferred water exists, which demonstrates the growth limitation for both agriculture and the groundwater funnel. Third, upgrades in water quality can mutually reinforce the quantity effect and greatly promote economic growth. An environmental limitation exists for all economic activities. Therefore, water quantity and water quality are equally crucial in the SNWD Project to provide an opportunity for sustainable development.

A system dynamics Model to Conserve Arid Region Water Resources through Aquifer Storage and Recovery in Conjunction with a Dam

Groundwater depletion poses a significant threat in arid and semi-arid areas where rivers are usually ephemeral and groundwater is the major source of water. The present study investigated whether an effective water resources management strategy, capable of minimizing evaporative water losses and groundwater depletion while providing water for expanded agricultural activities, can be achieved through aquifer storage and recovery (ASR) implemented in conjunction with water storage in an ephemeral river. A regional development modeling framework, including both ASR and a dam design developed through system dynamics modeling, was validated using a case study for the Sirik region of Iran. The system dynamics model of groundwater flow and the comprehensive system dynamics model developed in this study showed that ASR was a beneficial strategy for the region's farmers and the groundwater system, since the rate of groundwater depletion declined significantly (from 14.5 meters per 40 years to three meters over the same period). Furthermore, evaporation from the reservoir decreased by 50 million cubic meters over the simulation period. It was concluded that the proposed system dynamics model is an effective tool in helping to conserve water resources and reduce depletion in arid regions and semi-arid areas.

Domestic water demand prediction based on system dynamics combined with social-hydrology methods

systematic domestic water demand prediction is of great importance for social and economic sustainable development. To explain the system of domestic water demand prediction more completely, a system dynamic model based on the social-hydrology method was proposed in this paper. The key natural and socio-economic factors that affect the domestic water demand most were identified and investigated. The prediction equations of water price considering the feedback between humans and nature were deduced. The expressions of water-saving consciousness were proposed for the first time. Furthermore, the differential and difference equations for domestic water demand prediction were established to realize the future domestic water demand forecasts considering the natural and social driving forces. Finally, three scenarios were designed to investigate the impact of climate change and economic development on the domestic water demand. The upper and middle Pearl River Basin was selected as a case study. The predicted domestic water demand is consistent with the historical results, which demonstrates that the proposed model can be well used for the prediction of the domestic water demand. Under the three scenarios, the domestic water demand increased by 33, 27 and 18% in 2050 compared with that in 2017, respectively.

In the article, a possibility to introduce the 4th generation district heating (4GDH) in Latvia is analyzed with the system dynamic modeling. Three policy instruments were included into the system dynamic model: subsidies, instrument for risk reduction and instrument for efficiency increase, and their impact on the system operation was analyzed. Six development scenarios are examined in the article, two of which are supplemented with the transition of heat network to the low-temperature regime at a different share of the renewable energy (60%, 80%, 95%). The heat tariff was used as the main indicator determining the pace and structure of the technology change. In the model the existing natural gas technology was included and three technologies of the renewable energy biomass combustion equipment, solar collectors with the accumulation and heat pumps. Results of the modeling shows that scenario, at which no policy instruments are used, reduce CO2 emissions for 58.6% until 2030;but it is possible to achieve a zero emission level, in case political instruments are used. Using system dynamics to Support Strategic Digitalization Decisions

Although digitalization has become a prospect that is counted on for many problems in the construction industry, there have been limited attempts at exploring decision-making processes in construction firms concerning the integration of digital technologies and impacts beyond the projects. In this research, the system dynamics (SD) approach was proposed to investigate digitalization as a strategic decision considering the inherent relationships between project company and business levels. The SD model was conceptualized, formulated, and tested by conducting a demonstrative case study within a modular construction company. Conforming to the strategic priorities of the case company, business process engineering principles were adopted to model the existing practices and assess the impacts of implementing digital technologies such as building information modeling (BIM), enterprise resource planning (ERP), and radio frequency identification (RFID) at different maturity levels. The simulation tests revealed that the impacts of technologies are influenced by the internal dynamics of projects and company competencies as well as external uncertainties. The SD model has the potential to improve strategic decision-making by anticipating the causalities and feedback between the decisions and consequences of technology integration. The findings and model development steps proposed in this paper can be used by other companies that aim to make process improvements with digital technologies as well as researchers exploring the implications of digitalization in construction considering competencies and uncertainties.
